This is the story of one kid. A story of what one visually impaired kid from Kansas can do. A kid with contagious generosity, setting an example for individuals and corporations to become more philanthropic--to change the world. A kid who responded to a challenge and redefined himself. Jeff Hanson's art is hanging in Warren Buffett's home. The Association of Fundraising Professionals named Jeff "Young Philanthropist of the Year." The Small Business Administration named Jeff "Young Entrepreneur of the Year." The trifecta! Jeff Hanson is defined by art, philanthropy and entrepreneurship. Not the kid down the street who lost his vision to a brain tumor. Jeff Hanson will raise one million dollars for charity before he is 20. One million by 20!

The Aesthetic of Character
By Sarah M. Misemer, Ph.D.
I am an academic--one that normally writes book reviews for other academics about books that only academics read. These kinds of reviews have their own unique value. However, I am writing a review for LESSONS FROM CLOD because this is a book that everyone should read. Its value lies in the fact that it is a real story about a real family with real lessons. In fact, this book contains many stories: it is a love letter from a father to his family, a thank-you note from father to son and from husband to wife, a story of life-changing illness, a quest for healing, an exciting tale of entrepreneurship, an exploration of the meaning of art, and a case study about the impact of generosity and its legacy. There is no theoretical frame. It follows no editorial style guide. The book is quirky. And, it is this quirkiness that makes it so beautiful, poignant, and practical. If we understand Jeff Hanson's art as a reflection of his way of seeing the world after an optic glioma left him with very low vision--thick forms, bright colors, abstract features, and sculptural relief--so too must we envisage his father's mémoire as an account of his vision of the world of illness and despair his family was thrust into and ultimately conquered. How they did it, though, was completely backwards. They had no strategic plan. Memory, as critics have shown, is very rarely linear (it is quirky) and neither was this family's rise to triumph and success. Hal Hanson reminds us very clearly in a message that resides at the very heart of the intersection between the ethereal and the pragmatic; it is character above all else that matters. This mémoire does not require a formal editorial structure because content is more important than structure in this family's story. There is real information on how to create a profitable enterprise and a philanthropy, but the aesthetic here is about character: kindness, strength in adversity, perseverance, and selflessness. The lesson from CLOD is learning to appreciate what is truly beauty; it is one that often requires throwing out the old frame.

Voyage through challenge on the life-raft of art: How imprassario, Jeff Hanson found art & philanthropy after a brain tumor
By nicole emanuel
First came my studio visit, then came the book. I entered the world of Jeff Hanson, through his family's perspective. They do not offer a view through rose-colored glasses. They invited me to look into a 3D, kaleidoscopic spectrum of color, texture, philanthropy and entrepreneurialism.
The book takes your hand and asks you to close your eyes and listen as Jeff Hanson's father, Hal, unfolds the events. It begins with the hopeful father and his dreams that crash upon the rock of Jeff's brain tumor. The book traces the path Hal takes to the unexpected Narnia Closet of a new world that Jeff creates. Hal begins with the weight of grief. But the story quickly transforms into a tale of unexpected gifts as Jeff leads his family into his creative world.
The charming aspect of the story is the constant surprise that Hal describes as Jeff's scary diagnosis and treatment launch the family into a magical series of events that lead to Jeff's meteoric success as a painter, philanthropist and entrepreneur.
The voyage itself is like a movie with a star-studded cast. But the point of view is delivered through Hal, who is a self proclaimed amateur in the world of art, fundraising and being a father to a son who is a natural impressario.
Julie, Jeff's mom, is the optimistic machine behind the logistics that bring all the dreams to reality. Hal credits her hard work at the core of Jeff's story. In this book the truth is always more complicated than the tale and reality is stranger than fiction. While I cannot imagine the challenge they actually survived, I witnessed their triumph.
I highly recommend this book, not as a piece of classic literature, but as an example of a beautiful family that transforms bad luck into good luck for us all.

An incredibly inspirational and uplifting story
By Janet S
As former family patients of Dr. Hal Hanson and being from Julie Hanson's parents hometown, I was curious about this book! It is such a great story of hope to despair, then back to hope, then to tremendous success--always with SO much love! It's a story about loving parents, unrelenting perserverance, giving, hope, success, inspiration, and so many other excellent qualities. I would highly recommend this book to anyone whether or not they have children or whether or not they have faced serious health issues with anyone in their family. And the pictures of Jeff's paintings and works in progress are amazing. It is VERY well-written and captivating. What wonderful, loving parents Hal and Julie are and what an amazing young man Jeff is! A GREAT READ!!!
