This book is eye opening. I've heard before that we can potentially correct genetic diseases, but I didn't know the real world applications and treatments already existed. The book is a fun read and the reader doesn't need much prior scientific knowledge to understand the information.

Well written guide to a rapidly evolving sphere of medicine

DNA is a much used (and mis-used) acronym these days. For the general reader, wishing to dig deeper and understand more about genome testing, gene patches and the direction of modern medicine, "Defy your DNA" could not be a better place to start. It is written lucidly with clever use of analogy: "...Think of genes as library books; stacked on shelves (the chromosomes); in a library (the nucleus) of a city (the cell)..."
The reader is taken on a fascinating journey through chapters with headings such as "Medicine through the Millenia", "From Primordial Soup to Personalised Medicine", "The End of Hereditary Rare Disease" and into "The Pharmacy of the Future".
This is no dry, academic treatise and Dr Shrewsbury enriches it with personal examples from his years as a medical practitioner.
This book is a fascinating guide to a rapidly evolving sphere of medicine. Thoroughly recommended.

EF Benson at his worst

The Lucia books are among the funniest books ever written. The prolific Benson also wrote a number of great short stories and even some terrific ghost tales as well. This novel, however, is an effort to combine wit, murder, mystery, and superstition into what turns out to be an almost unfathomably dull novel. The scariest thing about this book is that it was republished.

but this turned out a bit like movie trailers

The sample that came was interesting, but this turned out a bit like movie trailers, where the most exciting or intriguing bits are in the trailer and then the rest is rather ho-hum. It is dated, but so is Dorothy Sayers' mysteries and they keep you intrigued. this one fell off the cliff after a bit and I didn't even finish it.

Singapore Only

I bought this book for a trip to Singapore only. It was the only one on the shelf. I read it on the plane and was very disappointed. It was poorly laid out. I had to keep flipping between pages to find info on the same location. The maps sounded like a good idea, but in the end, I didn't use any and just used my smart phone. Honestly, if you're planning a trip to Singapore, just research online or stop by a tourist spot and pick up brochures. Those were a ton more informative and had better maps.

Wild Horse Valley

The revised book "Open Range" published by Five Star Westerns in 2002 is far superior to this book which had additions written by a ghost writer and originally published in the late 1940's just because the editors at Harpers didn't feel the book was long enough--pure balderdash. The lead character, Panhandle Smith, has his life told from birth, and his nomadic lifestyle readies him for whatever is thrown in his way; and this is in essence the plot of this book. And he finds his "eldorado" in a rim-rock lined canyon filled with thousands of wild horses, worth a fortune if he can capture and sell them. Of course, one man stands in his way of capturing the horses and between him and the girl. It wouldn't be Zane Grey without the course of romance which never ran smoothly. Despite the ghost written additions I would still encourage you to buy this book, although Open Range is so much better it is almost impossible to express how much better. But this version will suffice if you can't acquire the other.

Andrea Zocchi is a Director of McKinsey & Company where he leads the Consumer Practice in Southern Europe. Andrea is also an adjunct professor at IMT - Institute for Advanced Studies - in Lucca (Italy), where he holds a course on advanced problem-solving techniques for PhD students. Andrea holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering and prior to joining McKinsey, he worked for Hewlett Packard Italy.

Marco Catena is an Associate Principal of McKinsey & Company. He works with retail and mobile telecommunications players on commercial and performance transformation topics. Marco holds a PhD in Industrial Management and a Degree in Management Engineering.

Dynamic analysis and interesting insight

The book gives to the reader a dynamic approach, starting from an historical and evolutionary framework.
It makes a review of the principal trends when it comes to retail industry and technology, giving insight about what could be different developements in the next future.

Very clear and well structured, the book ends with implications for managers and ways to put in action what described before.
Nevertheless it has a "best practices" approach, it keeps a conceptual appealing sharping the dynamic evolution of retail industry due to technology innovation.

If the book claims to be about technology, and about convincing retails to 'react' and 'adapt - they should avoid discussing issues beyond the expertise of the authors or seek this expertise from others - opening the book with a historical perspective on retail is a huge faux pas for this book - especially when on page 11 they claim that it was not until the 15th century that goods from India arrived in EU - they skipped entire history of the ME whereby the Ottoman Empire, Turkey today, had established one of the world largest shopping center in the world..... 5000 shops - gardens and hotels - and it was the Arabs via the Silk Road trade and travel that introduced such "retail format" which actually existed as far as back as the Carthaginians in North Africa.... so please take these ethnocentric pair of glasses you see the world through before you 'lecture' any retailer - especially the global ones who probably know the stuff I just said

The focus of Ultra-Short Pulsed Laser Engineered Metal-Glass Nanocomposites is the interaction of intense ultra-short laser pulses with glass containing silver nanoparticles embedded in soda-lime glass, and nanostructural modifications in metal-glass nanocomposites induced by such laser pulses. In order to provide a comprehensive physical picture of the processes leading to laser-induced persistent shape transformation of the nanoparticles, series of experimental results investigating the dependences of laser assisted shape modifications of nanoparticles with laser pulse intensity, excitation wavelength, temperature are considered. In addition, the resulting local optical dichroism allows producing very flexibly polarizing optical (sub-) microstructures with well-specified optical properties. The achieved considerable progress towards technological application of this technique, in particular also for long-term optical data storage, is also discussed.

About the Author

Dr. Andrei Stalmashonak is currently a Research Scientist at CODIXX AG, Barleben, Germany helping to transfer the knowledge behind the subject of this Brief to the international market.

Dr. Gerhard Seifert is currently leading an independent research group in the Centre of Innovation Competence SiLi-nano, which is investigating nanostructured materials for light and photon management, and femtosecond laser material processing. He is one of the discoverers of femtosecond laser induced shape change of metal nanoparticles in glass matrix (which is at the heart of the proposed SpringerBrief), and has published more than 20 papers on this topic since 1999 in renowned scientific journals.

Dr. Amin Abdolvand occupies the chair of Functional Materials & Photonics at the University of Dundee and currently holds a Career Acceleration Fellowship (2010-2015) from the Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) of the United Kingdom to work on metal-glass nanocomposites from nanoengineering to applications.
