Introduction to Biometrics, by Anil K. Jain

Biometric recognition, or simply biometrics, is the science of establishing the identity of a person based on physical or behavioral attributes.  It is a rapidly evolving field with applications ranging from securely accessing one’s computer to gaining entry into a country. While the deployment of large-scale biometric systems in both commercial and government applications has increased the public awareness of this technology, 'Introduction to Biometrics' is the first textbook to introduce the fundamentals of Biometrics to undergraduate/graduate students. The three commonly used modalities in the biometrics field, namely, fingerprint, face, and iris are covered in detail in this book. Few other modalities like hand geometry, ear, and gait are also discussed briefly along with advanced topics such as multibiometric systems and security of biometric systems. Exercises for each chapter will be available on the book website to help students gain a better understanding of the topics and obtain practical experience in designing computer programs for biometric applications. These can be found at: http://www.csee.wvu.edu/~ross/BiometricsTextBook/.Designed for undergraduate and graduate students in computer science and electrical engineering, 'Introduction to Biometrics' is also suitable for researchers and biometric and computer security professionals.

Awesome!
By Prem
I am a Professor, an active researcher and a consultant to Government and Corporate establishments in Biometrics. I have been teaching a popular post graduate elective "Biometrics" to students at my University. While the authors of this book are renowned stalwarts in this area and their publications are widely used both in research and teaching, a comprehensive textbook was thus far elusive and more than needed. This book is a fine gift to the Biometrics community - exceeding expectations! The treatment of the subject is very lucid and precise, covering all areas and current challenges in Biometrics.

The supplementary material and exercises are excellent resources for augmenting students' understanding while there are extremely useful tips even for seasoned researchers with significant experience in the area. This book is a must read for teachers, students, researchers and Biometrics enthusiasts. For me personally, a long search is over!

Much Needed Introductory Text in Biometrics
By R. Kasturi
This textbook on Biometrics by leading experts in the field is very timely. After many decades of significant research advances, Biometrics has matured to its current state in which products deploying this technology have become a part of our daily lives. This book written primarily at an introductory level would be popular among not only educators, students, and practitioners but also among those in the technology industry who have a need to have an understanding of the basic principles, strengths, and limitations of various biometrics modalities.

Principal biometrics modalities of fingerprint, face, and iris recognition are covered in depth in their own chapters where as other evolving modalities based on traits such as gait, ear, and hand geometry are introduced in a single chapter. An excellent coverage of the topic of combining evidence from multiple modalities, indispensible in very large scale deployments such as those in national identity systems, is provided in the Multibiometrics chapter. The book concludes with a chapter on the security of biometric systems, an important concern for everyone, which includes an analysis of its vulnerabilities and available countermeasures.

While most chapters contain introductory material appropriate for upper level undergraduate students or for those who wish to learn on their own, advanced topics which are a significant part of some of the chapters require a good background in statistical pattern recognition and image analysis. I had used a draft of the book to teach a semester long first year graduate course in biometrics at my university last year. Not all of my students had taken formal courses in these background topics. While they had some difficulty to follow advanced sections in iris and face recognition chapters, they were quite comfortable in understanding the concepts presented in the rest of the book. I much enjoyed teaching this course and appreciated the value of having a book which covered all important biometrics topics.

In summary, Introduction to Biometrics is an excellent contribution to the literature and would be of immense help to the large community of people working as researchers, designers, developers, and practitioners in this rapidly growing field.

Excellent text and reference!!
By Kar-Ann Toh
Biometric recognition is often perceived to be a rather specialized field. However, in view of its broad spectrum of data sources and multi-disciplinary techniques involved, it is among the best training grounds for pattern recognition. This book by Anil K. Jain, Arun A. Ross and Karthik Nandakumar is a long awaited book for such a training ground!

Differentiated from most other books on biometrics, this book is designed to provide a self-contained introduction to the basic concepts and methodologies for biometric recognition as well as to build a foundation on the subject matter.

In chapter 1, all related concepts, building blocks and terminologies are clearly explained, and this provides those readers who are unfamiliar with the topic a sound picture regarding the flow of biometric recognition, which also contains much the essence of a typical pattern recognition flow. Apart from the recognition issue, the security and privacy issues are introduced. This raises the awareness beyond technological issues in physical implementation. I find the bibliographical and historical remarks (including other chapters) particularly interesting as it traces the development of biometric systems where a retroactive review of current systems can be far more accessible.

While chapters 2, 3 and 4 focus on more developed biometrics such as fingerprint, face and iris, chapter 4 is devoted to emerging or less developed biometrics such as ear, gait, hand geometry and soft biometrics. Chapter 6 focuses on multibiometrics which capitalized on theories of information fusion. Through different sources and levels of fusion, the taxonomy of information fusion in the field is established. Chapter 7 introduces the structure of attack schemes. This provides a useful clue for useful biometric system implementation.

Last but not least, the resources provided in [...] are very helpful for more involved readers. Apart from sample exercises and additional references, links to databases and software are also provided. Sample Exercises for Chapters 1, 6 and 7 are particularly useful for assisting the readers with a better grasp of the subject. My only critique of this book is that similar exercises for remaining chapters are pending. I believe these exercises can be provided soon.

I congratulate the authors for yet another highly adopted book to come!
