Willard F. Harley, Jr. gives readers the keys to saving their marriages in this book. He takes couples through explanations about how we fall in love, (The Love Bank), why we fall out of love, methods for negotiation, how to protect each other, and how couples in damaged relationships can, once again, learn to care and nurture each other.
A sincerely committed couple can literally save thousands of dollars in marriage counseling with the instruction from this book. Complete with worksheets in the back, invaluable tools are there for the taking. Add Gary Chapman's book, The Five Love Languages: How to Express Heartfelt Commitment to Your Mate, and you've got the beginnings of a new relationship.

Why Bliss Turns Into a Battle

Willard F. Harley, Jr. presents one of the most well thought out theories on why marriages go from bliss to a battle. I've read a lot of marriage books over the last ten years and this one is the best I've read. I'm amazed this doesn't have hundreds of reviews. Throughout the book Willard F. Harley, Jr. guides you through the stages of one marriage's recovery. The couple goes from a state of withdrawal to a state of intimacy after following his excellent advice.

In "Give and Take" you will finally understand the causes of marital disharmony and what to do about them. In this book you will learn how to adapt to marital needs as they change over time. I felt that there was some excellent advice about dealing with anger which can be deadly to any marriage.

So why do people who once loved each other end up feeling intense hate? Is it simply because selfishness takes over? That is part of the problem but what really made sense was Willard F. Harley, Jr.'s ideas about how each one of us has an internal "taker" and "giver." When we are in love the giver seems to be in charge and when we fall out of love the taker seems in charge. By balancing the desires of the giver and taker we can find harmony in intimate relationships.

I read marriage books constantly because I think they are one of the keys to staying married. This book goes beyond teaching basic communication skills and really gets to the heart of the matter. I can highly recommend this book to you if you are in a marriage where you feel you are likely to divorce because you are in a state of withdrawal. If you think intimacy is not possible then you will be impressed by the dramatic recovery one couple goes through in this book.

Struggle to get through

Our Women's Sunday School class is about to finish this up. At our last class, many of us opened up that we will be glad to finish this book. I'll only speak from my view at this point but it was a struggle to get through. Too wordy, repeating same concepts and written at a level that you feel like you are working on a college dissertation. Could have been written in half the amount. We were left questioning more about what she was trying to say than the few moments where there were some great passages. Not to mention several mistakes. We couldn't believe an editor let some things pass. References to finding things in bible that the study bible and online searching couldn't find referenced in bible. Plus very very technical with the real vineyard, but we were spending time trying to follow the running a vineyard versus more time with the tons of examples she through out there to try and make her point. Plus pictures thrown in that we were trying to figure out who they were or the correlation. Sorry but not a book many of us at least will be recommending. Cindy probably used the writing to help her personal struggles which is great, but not something easy to follow for someone else to read that hasn't been with her in her struggles. This is the first not very positive review I've done on a book, but I didn't want another group to pick it up and bear through the many weeks to get through this. The only reason I didn't give it a one star is because there were 3 to 4 instances in the book where a passage did speak to me.

Motivating & Life Changing

Throughout childhood I was deprived from church. My parents didn't find it necessary to take us. I've always been afraid of attempting church and didn't know how to approach it. By reading Cindy Steinbeck's book, it truly made me feel comfortable with God. It brought my comfort level up and I went to my first church the Sunday after I read her book. It also helped me realize that we can't do it all ourselves. The "I'll do it myself" mentality and taking steps back to ask for help really helped me in my everyday life. Thank you Cindy for helping me find Christ, the true vine. My life is on a positive blessed track thanks to you and your motivating and educating book.

Delivery and condition of book were excellent. This is an exceptional Bible study for women...individually or in small groups; especially those who are dealing with a past that has caused pain and heartache. The author's analogy of her family's vineyard and God's love and desire for His people comes to life as she articulates the meaning of "being grafted into Christ."

Als ich zuerst das Buch lieste, war es bevor ich den Film mit DiCaprio kannte (obwohl der Film echt wow war :D) und bevor ich viel über das Buch gelesen hatte. Ich Iiebte die Idee des Buches natürlich und wer kann nicht das Cover lieben?!

About the Author
A North Carolina native, Dan Jolley is an American author and has worked in comics as a writer for over a decade. His work includes DC Comics' Firestorm, Eisner Award nominated JSA: The Unholy Three and TokyoPop's The Lost Warrior, an extension of the Warriors novel series by Erin Hunter.

Kurt Busiek has been writing comics professionally since three days before he graduated from college in 1982, when he sold a "Tales of the Green Lantern Corps" backup story that appeared in "Green Lantern #162." Since then, he's worked on just about everything from "Action Comics" to "Zot!," including runs on "Avengers," "Superman," "Conan" and others, and has co-created "Thunderbolts," "The Autumnlands," "Arrowsmith" and more. He's best known for his work on the multiple-award-winning "Marvels" and "Astro City."

Resurrected gem, complete with fire and gunfights and more fire

'Bloodhound' was a short-lived series in 2004 published by DC Comics that seemingly got lost among the event-driven books of the day. but for me, not having a "Identity Crisis Tie-In!" banner was one of the more appealing factors. Set largely on the fringes of the DC Universe, Clev and his partner/handler Agent Saffron hunted down the superhumans who operated under the radar, without a flashy costume or gimmick. Sadists and murderers the way they would really be with amazing powers. And for eleven issues (one being a cross-over with writer Dan Jolley's other series, 'Firestorm'), we had a rare kind of series for DC. I compare it almost to 'Gotham Central', but with an action-movie tone.

The violence hits that sweet spot, where its just gory enough that you're constantly thinking 'how did they get away with this!?' while not being so over-the-top that its cartoonish. There's also how the violence is shown that I really like, specifically that the victims of the criminals are not shown for shock value.The ratio of gore is 95/10 in favor of Clev & the villain to everyone else. Again, this was coming out at the same time 'Identity Crisis' was, and while both stories had villains who raped and murdered women, somehow the one without Batman and Superman on the cover was the one to not show it. I'm just impressed this book was able to have so much violence, but contain it to the necessary characters. If you're looking for a superhero story without the super, one with edge but without trying to be overly-gritty, this is a great title. Jolley wrote one of the most enjoyable new character of the last decade with Clev, who feels like he could come right out of any top-notch crime novel. And the art is handled by Leonard Kirk, someone I've admired since his JSA run and the other reason I first chose to try out this comic when it first hit the shelves. He has realistic figure work and terrific range of emotions and expressions. I never think of him as one of the best guys in the industry but maybe I should - I've never seen a bad comic by the guy. Kirk may be a victim to his own consistant talent, we don't realize how good he is since he doesn't slip up!

Onto this edition in particular. It may have taken nine years, but 'Bloodhound' has finally been collected by Dark Horse. Being it was a DC book, a few edits needed to be made. But Clev had such little to do with DC-proper that they're unnoticeable if you hadn't read the series before in the floppies. One C-list character had to be changed, and an issue was skipped (the 'Firestorm' cross-over). All-in-all Bloodhound: Brass Knuckle Psychology collects issues 1-4, and 6-10 of the original series. I say original because Jolley and Kirk have a new five-issue mini-series in the works from DH. And based off of the enjoyment I had rereading these stories, I am very much looking forward to seeing the band back together! As far as extras there's an intro by Kurt Busiek, and afterword by editor Ivan Cohen, and several pages of pin-ups and some original design sketches. A very good package for the $19.99 list price.

Must-read for a raw take on realistic superpowers

Bloodhound: Brass Knuckle Psychology reprints an excellent (but flew under the radar) series published by DC Comics in 2004 by Dan Jolley, Leonard Kirk, and Robin Riggs. But that doesn’t matter, because what we have here isn’t nostalgia — “oh, I’m so glad a favorite is back in print” — but a raw, brutal, smart take on superpowers that reads even better today. Now that I’ve had more time to think about it, anti-hero Travis Clevenger appeals to me because he combines the best of the best-known superheroes. He’s got Superman’s drive for justice, regardless of personal cost; Batman’s detective brains, outwitting most who confront him; and Wolverine’s toughness, determination, and ability to take pain.

Clevenger is a blond bear of an ex-cop, built like a pro wrestler, in prison for killing his partner. Before then, he was tops at apprehending superhumans. FBI Agent Saffron Bell needs his help to capture a serial killer targeting his ex-partner’s daughter, so she gets him out of jail … in the middle of a prison riot aimed at Clevenger. He’s got a talent for annoying almost anyone he comes in contact with. Bell also collars him, with a high-tech tracking and behavior device.

Jolley’s writing is terrific, intelligent and gripping. Although set in a metahuman universe, it’s more a crime story than a superhero book, with a serious look at the motivations of those outside the usual societal rules. (And no costumes, since the Firestorm crossover issue was omitted from this collection.) In that way, this is a throwback to the “last honest man” private eye type. If you like Ed Brubaker’s work like Fatale, you should definitely check this out.

Clevenger’s a fighter, clever (see the name) and willing to go as dirty as needs be, in spite of the effects on himself. He’d rather go through a threat than around. As a result, the book can be violent, but it’s not gratuitous (thanks, Leonard Kirk) and it’s in service of the story. I want to know more about who he was before, since I’m curious about how much of this came about from needing to survive in prison. We know he reshaped himself physically, but there’s a lot of background still to be learned about his mental state before and after. (For similar reasons, I really liked the TV show Life, starring Damien Lewis.) That’s one of the aspects that makes this story so rich and fascinating.

We do learn some of his background during the chapter when he’s being attacked by a telepath, someone who’s manipulating his memories. An additional story has him tackling a demonic firestarter. Kirk’s art is clear and straightforward, well supporting the gut-level stories with plenty of detail. (Review originally posted at ComicsWorthReading.com.)

The Best Title You've Never Read

Once in a while you stumble across a mainstream title that somehow flew under the radar. Usually it stayed under due to some sort of shortcomings; not so with Bloodhound. Released by DC in the early 2000's Bloodhound is every bit as good as any DC title at that time (or after). With topnotch storytelling and art, I cannot imagine why this title is not still going strong.

The Bloodhound in question is Travis Clevenger a brick house of destruction and mayhem he is more akin to the Punisher than any hero in the DCU. An ex-cop sentenced to a stretch of 20 in a Maximum Security Prison for killing his partner, he has spent his already considerable time behind bars honing his body and mind into an even bigger threat for the superhuman criminals he once hunted. It is this expertise that brings the FBI to his door with an offer of reduced sentence in exchange for capturing a superhuman serial killer whose latest target is his ex-partner's daughter.

The title has a lot going for it. Travis is a like-able, snappy-one-line dishing, violent anti-hero who leaps off the written page. The violence is graphic enough but done with a bit of finesse that helps punctuate the plot without overpowering it. His female FBI keeper Saphron Bell is the perfect foil to Travis and the sexual tension between the two, though cliche, is pleasantly palpable. All this with a series of criminal sleuthing with equal dosages of brain and brawn...what is there not to like?

But perhaps what is the most appealing trait of this limited series was its place in the DCU. Travis fights his way in the same world ruled by caped crusaders and men of steele, and yet, none of them get so much as a "boo" in this title. Even though superpowers is very much at the center, there are no team ups or stand downs by the squeaky clean members of the JLA to interfere with the plot. The title stands very much on its own without the help nor hindrance of such distractions and, as such, manages to be stronger than many of its universe brethren.

The afterword talks of the pitch made when the comic was originally published, "Dan came back to me with something distinctly unlike anything DC - or anyone else - was publishing at the time: the story of an X-Files-type duo where Mulder was a cross between the pro wrestler Triple H and Conan the Barbarian." This is a very apt description though I'm not sure most readers would realize the intelligence at play in the Conan part. And maybe that is why it remained under the radar; it was too radically different for DC readers (it might have fared better in the Marvel U). Or maybe its lackluster sales was due to the Identity Crisis machine that DC was churning during the run and the fact that this title had no tie in value whatsoever. Whatever the reason, it's a travesty since this is one of the most enjoyable DC titles I have read...ever.

So while it may remain off the radar for most, I strongly suggest you put it on yours.

Dans ce dernier cas, on parlera d’un préjudice par répercussion ou par ricochet. Le préjudice par répercussion a ceci de particulier qu’il se présente comme un préjudice certes personnel mais qui ne se conçoit pas indépendamment d’une atteinte préalable subie par la victime directe. Il importe de réfléchir sur la nature particulière du préjudice par répercussion et sur les liens de dépendance qu’il fait naître. L’examen de quelques questions spéciales relatives à l’indemnisation des préjudices résultant du décès terminera cette analyse. De prime abord, il reste choquant que le préjudice résultant du décès fasse l’objet d’une indemnisation souvent plus réduite qu’en cas de lésions corporelles.

About the Author
Ruth Chadwick is Distinguished Research Professor and Director of the ESRC (Economic and Social Sciences Research Council) Centre for Economic and Social Aspects of Genomics (Cesagen), at Cardiff University, UK and Link Chair between Cardiff Law School and the School of English, Communication and Philosophy (ENCAP). Professor Chadwick has coordinated a number of projects funded by the European Commission, including the EUROSCREEN projects and co-edits the journal Bioethics and the online journal Genomics, Society and Policy. She is Chair of the Human Genome Organisation Committee on Ethics, Law and Society, and has served as a member of several policy-making and advisory bodies, including the Panel of Eminent Ethical Experts of the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO), and the UK Advisory Committee on Novel Foods and Processes (ACNFP). She was editor-in-chief of the first edition of the award winning Encyclopedia of Applied Ethics. She is an Academician of the Academy of Social Sciences and a Fellow of the Hastings Center, New York; of the Royal Society of Arts; and of the Royal Society of Medicine. In 2005 she was the winner of the World Technology Network Award for Ethics for her work on the relationship between scientific developments and ethical frameworks. She graduated with first class Honours Literae Humaniores (Philosophy and Greek and Latin Literature) from the University of Oxford, and then went on to take the B.Phil. in Philosophy. Ironically, the study also recommends that smaller tribes band together to form a confederation to seek membership—a suggestion nearly identical to the one the United States made to the Delaware Indians in 1778—and that a presidential commission explore ways to move beyond the Doctrine of Discovery, under which European nations justified their confiscation of Indian lands. Many of these ideas appear here in this book, which predates the 2000 study by twenty-six years. Thus, Behind the Trail of Broken Treaties anticipates recent events as history comes full circle, making the book imperative reading for anyone wishing to understand the background of the movement of American Indians onto the world political stage.

A book worth reading

Vine Deloria Jr. was born in 1933 in Martin, South Dakota. He obtained a Master of Theology degree from the Lutheran School of Theology in Rock Island, Illinois in 1963 and a J.D. from the University of Colorado in 1970. His works, including "Custer Died for Your Sins", "We Talk, You Listen," and "God is Red" promote Native American cultural nationalism and a greater understanding of Native American history and philosophy. Vine Deloria's purpose in writing "Behind the Trail of Broken Treaties" is to demonstrate that the Native Americans have valid reasons for wanting to reopen the treaty-making procedure with the United States. He also states that by the United States accepting the proposal of the aboriginal Native Americans to honor all treaties as if the Native Americans were a foreign entity, the United States would be placing itself in the forefront of civilized nations in dealing with aboriginal peoples of a continent. The author's purpose is achieved through a close scrutiny of the Twenty Points assembled by Indian activists in St. Paul, Minnesota in December 1972. These points were believed to most fairly and adequately summarize the grievances of the various Native American tribes and suggested a reform program for the United States government to follow (48). The author not only examines the Twenty Points in great detail, but he also includes a summary of Native American history regarding their interaction with the Europeans. This summary begins with the colonists on the frontier. In chapter five, Deloria explains the colonists' idealogy of the doctrine of discovery. Since the colonists were the first to discover the lands east of the Mississippi River, they had full right to claim the land, even if the aboriginal people of the continent occupied the land. With this doctrine, the colonists laid claim to any and all land in their path of expansion. Deloria states that this doctrine was the catalyst for many of the wars fought by the great Indian chiefs in the 18th and 19th centuries. These battles led up to the terrible massacre of helpless Oglala Sioux Indians at Wounded Knee Creek, which finally ended Native American bloodshed through acts of war. The author creates an encyclopedia of examples of broken treaties between the United States and various Native American tribes, culminating in his day-by-day account of the Trail of Broken Treaties march on Washington D.C. in January of 1973. Just by picking up this black hardcover book with the title emblazoned down the spine in capital letters of bold red, the reader begins to feel the ominous message from within the book before the first page is read. Otherwise, the condition of the book is fair. The reader will immediately notice the lack of pictures to supplement the reading, as well as the lack of footnotes or bibliography to validate the author's research. This fact leaves Deloria open for criticism. First, Deloria states in the first few pages of the book that no American president has benefited the Native American people since the American Revolution. This statement is contradicted by the author himself several times in the book, including his discussion of President Andrew Jackson's backing of John Marshall's decision to uphold the laws of the Cherokee nation over the laws of the state of Georgia. On page eight, Deloria quotes Jackson as saying, "John Marshall has made his decision, now let him enforce it." Again on page thirty-six, Deloria mentions that the Indian activists were counting on the support of presidential candidate Richard Nixon because of the presidential administration's "genuine interest in correcting wrongs suffered by Indian people." The author remarks that this interest created "a general air of euphoria during the first year of the Nixon administration." Clearly not every president was set against the Native Americans. Another point of contention was Deloria's blatant prejudice against the government officials in charge of peacefully ending the siege of the Department of Internal Affairs building during the Trail of Broken Treaties campaign in Washington D.C. On page fifty-four, Deloria blames the guards in the building for pushing the Native Americans. He claims that this action provoked the fearful Native Americans into overtaking the building. But how does fear provoke one to assume such a violent position against the authority? The siege came to a peaceful resolution over the course of a weekend, with the government promising not to press charges against the Native Americans, even though extensive damage was done to the building during the siege. Deloria claims that much of the damage was caused by federal agents after the takeover was resolved. However, why would agents attempt to create more damage to the building if no charges were to be brought against the Native Americans involved? The author's prejudice appears to come into play in recreating this event. However slanted the author's views are against the nation's officials, Deloria's book is not totally without merit. His historical accounts of the battles of the Native Americans and the settlers are extremely accurate. His personal attachment to the Native American cause gives him a unique stance with his topic. His use of the pronoun "we" when describing the events of the march on Washington indicate to the reader that Deloria personally attended the Trail of Broken Treaties march in 1973. Finally, his incredible collection of treaties between the United States and the various Native American tribes gives the reader great background knowledge in the unfair treatment of the government against the Native Americans. This book was written for the adult audience attempting to learn more about the injustices done to the Native Americans by the United States. Although slanted toward the Native American point of view, this book is an invaluable account of our nation's trail of broken treaties.

The Unprophetic Dreamers.

Since this is a Tor.com short story, my guess is that this is a sliver of an introduction to a longer work, and this short story is an introduces us the world or characters of that longer work in order to "hook" the reader into making the investment into the longer work.

Unfortunately, I don't know what the longer work is. Even worse, for me, this introduction is far to cryptic to make the sale.

Briefly, Fantine works at the Ministry of Changes in a city which is at war. We hear about entire districts of the city being blown to bits. Fantine's job is to catalogue keys and dreams. Somehow, in this world, people can dream the future, and their dreams become - are made? - a reality. Unfortunately, as the war has continued, the Ministry of Changes has broken down.

Then, Fantine begins to investigate and discovers that the dream products have not being delivered when and where they are needed.

Obviously, this is a short story that doesn't have the space to do more than sketch the situation. But I think I need more, such as how do the dreams become real? How do the little bits of technological progress get replicated to make an impact on society and the war? I'm sure there are answers to this, but I pretty sure that be "willing suspension of disbelief" meter is already pegged at the upper limit.

The story does end with an interesting bit of unfulfilled prophecy which was a bit of a "hook." I'm not sure, though, that Fantine is interesting enough as a character to deliver on the promise.

The writing seems deft and interesting. I'm not sure I would read the whole book, but, on reflection, there might be something here after all.

About the Author
David Matsumoto received his B.A. from the University of Michigan in 1981 with High Honors in Psychology and Japanese. He subsequently earned his M.A. (1983) and Ph.D. (1986) in psychology from the University of California at Berkeley. He is currently Professor of Psychology and Director of the Culture and Emotion Research Laboratory at San Francisco State University, where he has been since 1989. He is also Director of Humintell, LLC, a company that provides research, consultation, and training on nonverbal behavioral analysis and cross-cultural adaptation. He has studied culture, emotion, social interaction and communication for over 30 years. His books include well-known titles such as Culture and Psychology, the Cambridge Dictionary of Psychology, and Cross-Cultural Research Methods in Psychology. He is the recipient of many awards and honors in the field of psychology, including being named a G. Stanley Hall lecturer by the American Psychological Association. He is the series editor for Cambridge University Press’ series on Culture and Psychology. He is also Editor-in-Chief for the Journal of Cross-Cultural Psychology.

Mark G. Frank is a professor and Director of the Communication Science Center at the University at Buffalo. He received his Ph.D. in Social Psychology from Cornell University in 1989, and afterward received a National Research Service Award from the National Institute of Mental Health to do postdoctoral research with Dr. Paul Ekman in the Psychiatry Department at the University of California at San Francisco Medical School. He had previously been on the faculty in the School of Psychology at the University of New South Wales in Australia, as well as the Communication Department at Rutgers University in New Jersey. He has published numerous research papers on facial expressions, emotion, and interpersonal deception, with much of the work funded by The National Science Foundation, Homeland Security, and the Department of Defense. He is also the co-developer of an automated computer system to read facial expressions. He has used these findings to lecture, consult with and train virtually all US Federal Law Enforcement/Intelligence Agencies, as well as local/state and select foreign agencies. He has also given workshops to US and foreign judges and magistrates. He has presented briefings to the National Academy of Sciences and the US Congress on Deception and Counter-terrorism. Finally, he has appeared in over 80 print, radio, and television appearances to talk about his work, including Time Magazine, New York Times, CBS Evening News, CNN, Fox News Channel, National Public Radio, The Learning Channel, the Discovery Channel, the Oprah Show, and so forth.

Hyi-Sung Hwang received her M.A. from San Francisco State University, and her Ph.D. from the Center for Psychological Studies of the Graduate School of Human Behavior, Berkeley, CA, 2009. She is a Research Scientist at Humintell, LLC, and Visiting Scholar at San Francisco State University. Her research interests are in emotion, nonverbal behaviors, and culture. She is an expert at the Facial Action Coding System and in the conduct of research examining facial expressions and other nonverbal behaviors. She is co-creator of many of the training tools used to teach law enforcement officers, national security personnel, and intelligence agents, as well as individuals in many other professions how to recognize micro and subtle facial expressions of emotion. She has also co-authored numerous scientific articles and book chapters on nonverbal behavior, facial expressions, and culture, and has made presentations of her research nationally and internationally.

It is a must read if you are interested in behavioral sciences!

I just finished reading Dr. David Matsumoto's most recent book, Nonverbal Communication: Science and Applications.
This book is the book that has been missing from library shelves across the world!

The field of non-verbal communication is an ever evolving field. Numerous research projects are conducted every year and many authors continue to write books each year. However, it was time for someone like Dr. David Matsumoto to make clear and precise points on the subject.

Surrounded by two leading experts, Mark G. Frank & Hyi Sung Hwang, they were able to write a quality and informative text that has great simplicity and is easily understood. All three were able to create a much needed addition to microexpression training that has a sizable quantity of references.

From the first pages, I immediately felt that I was holding a great reference for non-verbal communication, carefully written by experts who know what they are talking about.

The first part of the book is written by the three previously mentioned authors, in collaboration with other professionals and colleagues and each chapter is documented, with clear and precise references, which makes it easy to follow up on studies and current research in the field.

The second part presents an implementation of the concepts discussed in the first part. The authors are professionals who explain how they use their knowledge of nonverbal communication on a daily basis. Although very interesting, I must admit that I enjoyed the first part more.

This book is a masterpiece written by three recognized experts in the science of non-verbal communication.

great book

Bought this for my son as a gift. He just graduated with his psyc degree and is going into law enforcement. You know it's a great book when you child ask for text book as a gift after they've graduated and they carry it with them for weeks reading every detail in it. He said what he's read will help him greatly in law enforcement and it will be a good reference guide for years to come.
