About the Author
Gabriela Goldstein is a practicing psychoanalyst, a full member and training analyst of the Argentine Psychoanalytic Association and representative on the Board, and a past member of the Publications Committee. She is also a member of the Psychoanalysis and Culture Committee of the IPA, and the author of The Aesthetic Experience: Writings on Art and Psychoanalysis, as well as various articles and book chapters on the subjects of art, love and sexuality. She received the Baranger-Mom award in 2003, and the Storni award in 2004. She is also an architect and a painter.

This is a must-read book for anybody interested in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League -- the women who played baseball from 1943-54. It is these women whose story was made into the movie "A League of Their Own." Everything you would want to know about the origin, the rules, the regulations, the schedules, the players, and the results of each season is in this book.

She first maps the overlapping histories that comprise Napa's past, then examines how the current version came to dominate—or even erase—earlier events. So while history, in Heidenreich's words, may be "the stuff of nation-building," it can also be "the stuff of resistance." Chapters are interspersed with "source breaks"—raw primary sources that speak for themselves and interrupt the linear, Euro-American telling of Napa's history. Such an inclusive approach inherently acknowledges the connections Napa's peoples have to the rest of the region, for the linear history that marginalizes minorities is not unique to Napa. Latinos, for instance, have populated the American West for centuries, and are still shaping its future. In the end, "This Land was Mexican Once" is more than the story of Napa, it is a multidimensional model for reflecting a multicultural past.

This book covers information that has never been gathered before. Particularly we tend to think of the Spanish/Mexican era in California as one of romance, caballeros and senoritas,with benign padres at the Missions.

In reality it was a tough life on the frontier. And this book tells the rest of the story.

The legendary Harry Greb stepped into the ring more than 300 times from 1913 to 1926, defeated opponents who outweighed him by more than 30 pounds, held the middleweight and light heavyweight titles and beat every Hall of Fame boxer he ever fought. Dubbed "the Pittsburgh Windmill" because of his manic, freewheeling style in the ring, Greb also crossed racial lines, taking on all comers regardless of color. An injury in the ring led to Greb's gradually going blind in one eye and should have ended his career, but he kept his condition secret and fought on. Tragically, the indomitable fighter would be dead by the age of 32, felled by complications during minor surgery.

Not as satisfying as finding a Greb film, but a great read

As no fight films of this fantastic pugilist are known to exist, Bill Paxton's new bio of the great Harry Greb (b. 1894, d. 1926, & fought from 1913 to 1926) is a godsend for hardcore fans of the sweet science. I have known of Greb for years - indeed, more than a decade before Paxton created his [...] website in 1996 - and have read many magazine and web articles about him, but it's always been frustrating that no in-depth book about this boxing immortal had been written. Until now.

Paxton does a great job of informing the reader not only about Greb the man, but also of Greb the fighter, including his fighting style and the boxing techniques that he utilized, which is extremely interesting since, as I noted above, no films of any of his 299 - 299! - official pro bouts are extant. Relying mainly on contemporary newspaper accounts of his fights, Paxton provides as vivid a description of what it was like to face the "Pittsburgh Windmill"/"Human Windmill"/"Smoke City Wildcat" as is possible by such means. Furthermore, the author meticulously addresses many of the myths regarding the fighter that legendary heavyweight champion Jack Dempsey was scared to tackle (interestingly, while the "Manassa Mauler" wouldn't give Greb a title shot, he did defend his crown against several fighters whom Greb, a [natural] middleweight, had already decisively beaten).

One of these myths is that Greb was one of the "dirtiest" fighters of all-time. Here, Paxton elucidates that Greb only really started employing blatantly foul tactics after losing the sight of his right eye (Greb fought the last five years of his career with this handicap) and, even then, only employed the most flagrant and damaging of them AFTER an opponent had begun fouling HIM. Ironically, while Greb did, indeed, utilize various dubious techniques to gain an advantage, he, nonetheless, possessed great sportsmanship and a strong sense of fairness, as well as integrity. To wit: despite employing many foul tactics during his title defense against Mickey Walker, such as pushing his upper body through the ropes with one hand and hitting him with the other, Greb still showed an out-on-his-feet "Toy Bulldog" to his corner at the end of the fourteenth round; Greb would almost always help an opponent who had slipped to the canvas back to his feet; he gave Fay Kaiser a shot at his middleweight title largely because they had fought EIGHT times before Greb won the crown; and he took on Theodore "Tiger" Flowers in a title defense, the FIRST title shot granted to an African-American by a Caucasian-American world champion since the heavyweight title reign of the controversial and highly unpopular (among whites) Jack Johnson, the first African-American to hold that crown.

About the only myths about Greb that Paxton doesn't address are of him always leaving the light on when going to sleep after becoming blind in his right eye, of Greb losing some of the sight in his "good" left eye during the last couple of years of his career (& life), and of Harry Wills, a giant African-American whom Dempsey also "ducked", not wanting to fight Greb (incidentally, it would have been nice if the author had been able to find out and print what Wills, Sam Langford, Jack Blackburn, Kid Norfolk, and other great African-American contemporaries had to say about Greb's style and abilities - almost all of the fighters quoted by Paxton as to Greb's ability, etc were white).

Paxton provides Greb's complete ring record and measurements at the end of the book and the chapter titles are as follows: 1. From a Street Corner to a Ring Corner; 2. The Early Road of Trials; 3. Icky's Busy Year ("Icky" was Greb's childhood nickname); 4. In the Navy; 5. First Year of Marriage and the #45 (Greb fought an all-time record 45 bouts in 1919); 6. Jack Dempsey and the Heavyweights; 7. A Time for Change; 8. A City Celebrates; 9. All Good Things; 10. Achieving the Goal - The Middleweight Championship; 11. Defending the Title; 12. The Tunney Rematches; 13. The Champion Playboy; 14. The Bulldog Meets the Windmill; 15. The Best of His Time; 16. The Tragic Hero; & 17. The Myths Grow While the Legend Fades.

A "Fearless" Biography

A "Fearless" biography of the relatively unknown but incredible boxer, Harry Greb.

I've been looking forward to a book that puts together all of the pieces of Greb's incredible life since I discovered the harrygreb.com website about 8 years ago. It makes so much sense that the the book I have been waiting for has been written by the very creator of that website.

The book is incredibly well researched and documented. There are over 120 amazing and rare photographs, (most of which are not on the above mentioned Greb website) and almost 800 end-notes! It seems that every fact and statement is backed up with the source, mostly previously uncovered newspaper documentation. The facts are not just stated, but woven into a story that gives an understanding into what made Greb tick. Whenever a fight venue, location or opponent is discussed in the text usually a great photograph to goes along with it.

"The Fearless Harry Greb" is more than just an interesting biography and analysis of the mysterious Greb, however. It reads like an "American Experience" in book form. The descriptions of Greb's early years are full of details of what life was like during the early 20th century.

An example of the depth of research is the chapter that delves into the mystery behind Greb's blindness. One of the remarkable aspects of his life and proof of his temerity is that he fought for years while blind in his right eye! Greb had to keep this a secret from his opponents, of course, so very little information about how and when this occurred has been known. This has always been one of the mysteries behind the Greb legend. Paxton has not only uncovered when and how this injury occurred, but has also done in depth research and consultations with retinal detachment surgeons who have analyzed and described the structural damages that happened to Greb's eye. A unique and interesting diagram further explains the progression and type of damage that eventually blinded Greb.

Although written for boxing scholars and historians (as evidenced by the documented and referenced chapter notes) I would recommend "The Fearless Harry Greb" to any reader that is interested in history, athletic triumph over adversity or just an amazing story.

When is the movie coming out about this truly heroic, astonishing and unknown athlete?!

An important book for boxing

Mr. Paxton has written a much-needed biography of Greb that is a great read. To call it "well-researched" doesn't do it justice. He has painstakingly cleared up all of the myths about the great Harry Greb in a book that is easy to read and holds interest throughout. I am the author of Billy Conn the Pittsburgh Kid, so I know a lot about researching old documents from the pre-Internet age. Paxton has done a superb job of bringing a fascinating character to life and describing the city of Pittsburgh in the early 20th century. This is an important book in the field of boxing history. Greb may well be the greatest fighter in the history of the sport, but is not well-known because he fought so long ago. No boxing fan's collection is complete without it.

An Endangered Music

Besides the liturgical Hebraic chants of the Torah and Haftarah, which like Qu'ran chants are of Semitic origin, and the Ladino ballads and romances whose origin is Sefarad Spain, Jewish music of the Ottoman and Turkish republic includes the mystical poetic choral hymns, the miftirim, which arose under the influence of classical art music of the court and Mevlevi Sufi music. This excellent, award-winning book explores this endangered music from a historical, sociological, and political perspective. Its descriptions, biographical sketches, and onsite perspectives afford insight into a once major center of Jewry.

Small clusters of Jews existed in Byzantium before the Oghuz Turk conquest, but the population increased substantially when the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire offered refuge to the Jews of Spain after their forced exile in 1492. Already familiar with Arabic maqams (modal scales) and their taksim improvisations, Jewish musicians were able to shift to the similar Persian-Turkish modes; and just as Jews, Muslim Arabs and Berbers, and Christian Europeans shared each other's music in Spain, the Sufi lodges welcomed Jews and Armenians to hear and learn their own hymns and musical forms. In turn, Sufis visited synagogues. The relationship was so cordial that when the Sufi lodges and practices were banned in the early days of the Republic, Mevlevis held their sema musical rites 'under the radar' within synagogues.

Author Maureen Jackson presents four Jewish musicians as examples of specialization and adaptation: Chief Rabbi Hayim Mose Becerano [1846-1931] and cantor Samuel Benaroya [1908-2003], who engaged in liturgy and miftirim; Nesim Sevilya [1856-1949], who performed popular songs and miftirim; and Misirili Ibrahim Efendi [1878-1948], who played the ud and sang and recorded art and popular songs. [As part of the nationalization and homogenization edicts of Turkey in 1934, Jewish and Armenian names were turned into Turkish equivalents. Korean residents in Japan also have to convert their names, and around this time immigrants to the United States also were obliged to find English or shortened forms.] Musical training followed the oral route, as until recently, there were no suitable notation to cover complex vocal ornamentation nor recordings. Other than hearing music in neighborhood homes, churches, and synagogues, gazino entertainment centers presented art songs, and later radio and musical societies offered other outlets for popular music. As part of Kemel Ataürk's modernization processes, European music and musical styles were introduced and emphasized over ethnic forms, and in the 1930s German Jews fleeing the Nazis to come to Istanbul and Ankara to instruct how to adapt Turkish folk melodies into Western format. Paul Hindemith, whose father-in-law was Jewish, developed a conservatory for Turkish opera; ballet, and concerti.

The book also discusses gender issues. In the synagogue, women were separated, sitting upstairs. They were not allowed to sing, and thus did not participate in miftirm and certainly were not among the clergy, nor were they permitted to record. At home, they kept Ladino folk tunes alive and did learn informally and privately the religious songs and classical art music. Their musicmaking was limited to weddings and similar family occasions as well as Sabbath and passover rites and tunes.

After the establishment of modern Israel, nearly half the Turkish population emigrated and fewer than 20,000 remain, mainly in Istanbul. The restrictive minority laws was another factor for leaving. Facing changes in musical taste with simpler and faster popular music, classical art music became a scholarly, eclectic study and maftirim is now performed by only two groups, one for public performances in national, multi-religious commemorative concerts. Oral transmission continues but computer-developed arrangements, song collections, and particularly recordings bring futher risk to the musical form. For future generations, CDs will create a standardized vocal styling, choral sound, and interpretation, when teacher-induced variation was the hallmark. While Europe now has created Jewish museums and organized old Jewish districts to welcome Jewish tourists, Turkey still is engaged in Islamic dominance and minority suppression; the remaining synagogues have strong security measures, and Sufis are still largely quiet and hidden despite the Rumi museum in Konya and programs of dervish dancers for tourists. This book, Mixing Musics, is not about fusion but does explain the processes of musical exchange and development. It is an important and fascinating addition to Jewish history and ethnomusicology.

Applying the insights of cognitive metaphor theory to an extensive natural language data set drawn from hundreds of articles in the Los Angeles Times and other media, Santa Ana reveals how metaphorical language portrays Latinos as invaders, outsiders, burdens, parasites, diseases, animals, and weeds. He convincingly demonstrates that three anti-Latino referenda passed in California because of such imagery, particularly the infamous anti-immigrant measure, Proposition 187. Santa Ana illustrates how Proposition 209 organizers broadcast compelling new metaphors about racism to persuade an electorate that had previously supported affirmative action to ban it. He also shows how Proposition 227 supporters used antiquated metaphors for learning, school, and language to blame Latino children's speech—rather than gross structural inequity—for their schools' failure to educate them. Santa Ana concludes by calling for the creation of insurgent metaphors to contest oppressive U.S. public discourse about minority communities.

Worthy dissection of public discourse � while tedious

Brown Tide Rising is not one of those social science books with a beat. No one will soon convert it to a hit song or into a blockbuster movie. Reading it is tedious without being overly complicated, but didn't all our mothers make us eat our broccoli? Some books need to be read even when we don't want to read them.
Santa Ana walks the reader through his analysis of metaphors utilized in the Los Angeles Times when reporting on three California propositions presented to the electorate in the 1990's. All had direct and potentially adverse repercussions for Latinos. This book carefully deconstructs the ways in which the parameters of the debates were constructed by looking at the language, and metaphors, used in newspaper accounts.
The power in Santa Ana's work lies in his explanation of the idea of public discourse. Public discourse is the imaginal limitation of perspectives. This narrowing of perspectives is accomplished by almost subliminal use of metaphor so that the legitimate contours of an issue are restricted by assumption and adoption of a specific cognitive framework. Because this framework is undeclared and public, it serves to significantly restrict public debate and provides an assumptive, public heuristic that easily substantiates bias, injustice, and discrimination.
Few in America continue to defend ethnic and racial pejoratives. Their demeaning use is without social acceptance or approval. Santa Ana clearly shows that the metaphors utilized in public discourse are substantially more pejorative than the most blatant verbal slur.
I hope that many will read this work. Awareness of the power inherent in the formation of public discourse, a power that is quite subtle and pervasive, can only be controlled by an intelligent and insightful public.
