About the Author
Teresa was born at Alencon, Normandy. In 1886 she underwent a religious conversion and thereafter dedicated herself to monastic life. Entering the Carmelite convent at Lisieux at fifteen, she was appointed assistant novice mistress in 1893. One year before her death (1897) from tuberculosis, she volunteered to join the Carmelite missionaries in China. Her devotional book, The Little Way, was widely acclaimed, as was her autobiography The Story of a Soul. Miracles of healing and prophecy soon were attributed to her name, and an account of these was appended in 1907 to the autobiography.

Priceless

While I am reading this book, I feel as if I have company in my heart and with my thoughts. Thoughts that you don't share with anyone but yourself and God.
Nice to know that what you feel and think was also done by a Saint, not that I am one. It is encouraging, gives me hope, guides me towards God, helps me to come to know the Lord better. It is great for reflection. I underline a lot of the advice that she gives so that I can use it for easy reference.

Spiritually Encouraging

I bought this book in an effort to grow spiritually and meditate upon the mysteries of our faith. I have bought many books that are left unfinished, primarily because I have a difficult time reading (ADD) and one that keeps my interest. I must say, with this book I have not skipped one page and have even re-read many paragraphs! I am only half way through, but I am always looking forward to my reading time at the end of the day. St. Therese is truly charming in her innocent writing style and gives such a vivid picture of her life. I have found myself imitating her (one example being that prior to going to sleep, she would review her entire day for anything she may have done wrong or offensive to others so she could improve her behavior. She couldn't wait to go to confession to cleanse her soul and had an innate understanding that it was truly Jesus she was confessing too (she was only about 7 years old) which most of us adults have a hard time with! So in conclusion, I am very pleased with this book and it really is bringing me closer to Jesus as was my intention when I purchased it. Happy and blessed reading to all!

The 10th Armored had only arrived in Europe that September, as part of Patton’s Third Army, and their divisional motto, “Terrify and Destroy,” was somewhat belied by the onslaught of Nazi panzers that burst across no-man’s-land on December 16. Instead their nickname, “The Tiger Division,” became fully earned, as they went on the defensive at Bastogne, surrounded by an entire German army, yet refused to concede a single inch of ground not earned with blood.

General Anthony McAuliffe, of the 101st Airborne (and “Nuts” fame), said, “It seems regrettable to me that Combat Command B of the 10th Armored Division didn’t get the credit it deserved at the battle of Bastogne. All the newspaper and radio talk was about the paratroopers. Actually the 10th Armored Division was in there a day before we were and had some very hard fighting before we ever got into it.”

Fortunately, in this book, the historical record is finally corrected. With their trademark style, King and Collins, through their firsthand interviews with veterans, bring us straight into the combats of the 10th Armored, equaling the balance between the brave paratroopers and gallant tankers who, together, held off Germany’s last major offensive in the West.

A personal look at the Tigers of 10th AD during the dark days at Bastogne

The authors had a mission when writing this book. Though there are many fine books written on the battle for Bastogne that include the valiant efforts of the CCB of 10th AD in the early days of the campaign when the 101st AbD was still in transit or were still deploying and not quite battle ready but the authors feel that these earlier books didn't sufficiently highlight the regiment's courageous deeds in saving Bastogne. Mr Collins and Mr King set about in fixing that shortcoming by writing a more personable, meritorious account of the fighting Tigers of 10th AD. I fully agree for on 12/18 and 12/19 (along with elements of 9th AD) successfully but at great cost slowed the German advance at Foy, Noville, Longvilly, Magaret and Neffe to allow the 101st AbD reach Bastogne ahead of the German assault on the town.

The book is a blend of battle history along with verbal history and first hand accounts which dominate the book. If you have read the authors' earlier book, "Voices of the Bulge" then you'll know what to expect.

The introduction describes a brief history of the division including the difficult fighting at Metz and some of the key people that will take part in the ordeal to save Bastogne. After the intro, a daily accounting from 12/15 to 12/28 is provided that will give a personal slant to the fighting. Using material from interviews and primary Army records, personal thoughts and deeds of the CCB are recreated.

The difficult fighting and sacrifices made by the different teams that were carved out of the CCB are concisely covered. Col Roberts, Maj Desobry, Lt Col Cherry. Lt Col O'Hara, Lt Col Browne, Capt Reyerson and many others are highlighted, showing their personal bravery and leadership during extreme hardship.

Also included are nine useful B+W maps that display the key battle sites during this time period, an Appendix, Notes, a very nice galley of photos of key people, the town and related battle scenes. The book closes with a decent Index.

Even if you're new to the "Bulge" this would be a good book to read but if you're a dedicated student of the campaign, this book will mean even more to you for it would make an excellent supplement to the other key books written by Cole, MacDonald, Parker, Eisenhower, Elstob, Dupuy, Winton etc. This book is a welcomed addition to my other books on the Ardennes Offensive and is highly recommended to all who have an interest in the battle for Bastogne or just want to read about the personal side of battle.

A good attempt, but flawed

The authors wanted to write this book in order to venerate the mostly unsung stories of the 10th Armored Division during the Battle of the Bulge. While the stories definitely needed to be told, they needed to be told better than this. The book provides lots of personal anecdotes and has some great photos, but the organization and presentation could have been much better. Too often there is a personal recollection right after a piece of text and the two of them talk about completely different events. There are several maps, but sometimes they're placed several pages before the action they're showing. As for proofreading, this book really needed a good one, or even a decent one. Way too many errors in spelling, grammar and punctuation.

I applaud the authors for bringing these stories to the public, but they could have done a much better job.

Not Just Another Battle of the Bulge Title

The Tigers of Bastogne is about the fight conducted by Combat Command B of the 10th Armored Division alongside the 101st Airborne Division against hordes of Germans that laid siege to Bastogne. The tale is told in largely in the words of the veterans that the authors had interviewed supplemented by unit after-action reports and citations for medals earned during the fight. The authors provided a framing chapter that provided background on the 10th Armored and introduced some of the veterans. The heart of the book is the day by day description of events beginning with December 15th and lasting to December 28th. A final chapter provides a brief summary of the part played by the 10th Armored in the rest of World War II.

Michael Collins and Martin King have done Battle of the Bulge aficionados a great service by highlighting the role played by the 10th Armored in defending Bastogne with the 101st Airborne especially using the voices of the veterans. However, there are issues of fact checking (mislabeling Panthers as Mark IV's for example) and proofreading (using fair instead of fare when referring to food) in the framing portions written by the authors that should have been caught. Non-aficionados will not grasp the full significance of this tale as the authors present the fight for Bastogne in isolation without relating it to the whole Battle of the Bulge campaign. Also novices to the battle will be disconcerted regarding the disjointedness of the tale as one brief portion of a fire-fight is given, then there is a quick switch to another location with a different veteran with very little connection provided. The maps provided are helpful, but few.

Overall, despite the short-comings listed, Michael Collins and Martin King are to be greatly commended for writing this book and letting the readers in on a little heard story.

About the Author
Tony Farrell is a graduate of Bath University, where he was fortunate to study with Peter Lutz. His fortunes grew further when he moved in 1974 to Canada and the Zoology Department at the University of British Columbia to complete his Ph.D. degree under the superb tutelage of Dave Randall. In 2004, Tony returned to UBC when he accepted an endowed research chair in Sustainable Aquaculture.
In between these positions at UBC, Tony was employed at the University of Southern California (PDF), the University of New Brunswick (sessional lecturer), Mount Allison University (first real job) and Simon Fraser University (moving through the ranks to a full professor). In addition to highly controlled laboratory experiments on fish cardiorespiratory physiology, Tony is committed to working on animals in their own environment. Therefore, his research on fish physiology has taken him on an Alpha Helix expedition to the Amazon, the University of Gothenburg and the Kristineberg Marine Research Station in Sweden, the Portobello Marine Biological Station in New Zealand, the University of Christchurch and Massey University in New Zealand, the Bamfield Marine Science Station and the Huntsman Marine Station in Canada, the University of Aarhus in Denmark, the University of Adelaide Charles and Darwin University in Australia, and to the Danish Arctic Marine Station on Disco Island in Greenland. These travels have allowed him to work and with many superb collaborators word-wide, as well as study the physiology of over 70 different species of fish. Tony has received a number of awards for his scientific contributions: an honorary degree from the University of Gothenburg in Sweden; Awards of Excellence from the American Fisheries Society for Fish Physiology, Conservation and Management; the Fry Medal from the Canadian Society of Zoologists; and the Beverton Medal from the Fisheries Society of the British Isles.

About the Author

Dr Qiuyu Wang is a Senior Research Fellow at the Manchester Metropolitan University. Her major research interest is in cancer biology and stem cell biology. She teaches many aspects of Molecular and Cellular Biology, and is co-editor of Biomedical Science Practice (OUP, 2010).

Dr Chris Smith was formerly a Senior Lecturer in Biochemistry at the Manchester Metropolitan University, where he taught biochemistry and cell & molecular biology at all levels. He has written and edited several undergraduate texts, including contributions to Biomedical Science Practice (OUP, 2010) and Clinical Biochemistry (OUP, 2010).
