It could hardly be termed harmonious, and was not devoid of rivalry and jealousy, sometimes even of hidden passion and outright hostility. Nevertheless, friendship, sympathy, collegiality and readiness for cooperation were just as important for Ferenczi and Jones as rivalry, mistrust and suspicion. This volume celebrates the 100th anniversary of the foundation in 1913 of both the British and the Hungarian Psychoanalytical Societies.

They give the reader a vivid insight in the seriousness, excitement and engagement of these two men in the new discoveries in psychoanalytic theory and technique. But what is exceptional is that these letters which reveal increasing misunderstandings and tensions between the correspondents also mirror the conflicts, quarrels and increasing mistrust which were present amongst the members of the international community close to Freud. About the Author
Sandor Ferenczi (7 July 1873 - 22 May 1933) was a Hungarian psychoanalyst, a key theorist of the psychoanalytic school and a close associate of Sigmund Freud whod latter wrote that Ferenczi made "all analysts his students", a fitting tribute to a towering figure of psychoanalysis. In 1910, at Freud's suggestion, Ferenczi proposed the founding of the International Psychoanalytic Association, and in 1913 founded the Hungarian Psychoanalytic Society. In 1916 he underwent a brief personal analysis with Freud, and in 1918 was elected president of the International Psychoanalytic Society. Ferenczi's early contributions to psychoanalysis have been so fully assimilated that their origin is often forgotten, although his later writings, which were more speculative and deviated from Freudian orthodoxy, have been less widely accepted. He is acknowledged to have been a gifted therapist. He proposed a number of innovations in technique including at first these centered on the so-called "active" technique, while his later study of reactions of disappointment and mistrust that the child suffers in his relationship with his parents inspired a few of his pupils, notably Alice Balint (1949), to investigate early parent-child relationships. Ferenc Eros studied psychology and literature at the ELTE University in Budapest. He is Professor of Social Psychology at the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Pecs, where he is director of a doctoral programme in psychoanalytic studies since 1997. The focus of his present research areas include the social and cultural history of psychoanalysis in Central Europe, psychoanalytic theory and its application to social issues, the problem of trauma and cultural memory. He edited the Hungarian translation of the Freud-Ferenczi correspondence and founded 'Thalassa', the journal of the Sandor Ferenczi Society in Budapest, which he edited from 1990-2010. At present, he edits 'Imago Budapest', the journal of the Hungarian Imago Association. Ken Robinson is a psychoanalyst in private practice in Newcastle upon Tyne and the Honorary Archivist for the British Psychoanalytical Society. He is a training analyst for trainings in child,adolescent and adult psychotherapy in the North of England and in Scotland. He lectures and teaches in the UK and Europe, and is especially interested in the developmental point of view, the nature of therapeutic action, and the history of psychoanalysis. His most recent publication is a brief history of the British Psychoanalytical Society. Judit Szekacs-Weisz is a bilingual psychoanalyst and psychotherapist, a member of the British and the Hungarian Psychoanalytical Society. Born and educated (mostly) in Budapest, she has absorbed the ideas and way of thinking of Ferenczi, the Balints, Hermann, and Rajka as integral parts of a "professional mother tongue". She is author of several articles, and co-editor of 'Lost Childhood and the Language of Exile'. Together with Tom Keve she co-edited 'Ferenczi and His World' and 'Ferenczi for Our Time'.

Freudian Insights

Jones (English) and Ferenczi (Hungarian) were key players in the psychoanalytic movement. Part of Freud's Committee, they were, respectively, conservative and liberal. Eventually Ferenczi pulled away, as had his closest friend in the group, Otto Rank, who never got along with Jones. Jones's 3-volume biography of Freud dominated the history of psychoanalysis for decades, and this new, relatively small compilation provides some balance, as the Freud-Ferenczi and Freud-Jones letters have already.

A MUST FOR ANYONE WITH SERIOUS INTEREST IN PSYCHOANALYSIS

Sandor Ferenczi, very controversial in his life , especially the last years after his break with Freud , has become more and more the focus of much appreciation and understanding and study in recent years. Much of what he had advocated and for which he was so criticized, has now really found its place. This book is invaluable for all those interested in the field.

About the Author
David Andrews is Professor of Chemical Physics at the University of East Anglia, where he leads a theory group conducting wide-ranging research on fundamental photonics, fluorescence and energy transport, nonlinear optics and optomechanical forces. He has 250 research papers and ten other books to his name, and he is a regularly invited speaker at international meetings. In North America and Europe he has organized and chaired numerous international conferences on nanoscience and technology. Andrews is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, the Institute of Physics, and the SPIE - the international society for optics and photonics. In his spare time he enjoys relaxing with family and friends; he also is a keen painter of the British landscape. His other interests generally centre on music, art and graphics, and writing.

Greg Scholes is an Associate Professor at the University of Toronto in the Department of Chemistry. His present research focuses on elucidating the principles deciding electronic structure, optical properties, and photophysics of nanoscale systems by combining synthesis, theory, and ultrafast laser spectroscopy. Recent awards honoring his research achievements include election to the Academy of Sciences, Royal Society of Canada in 2009, the 2007 Royal Society of Canada Rutherford Medal in Chemistry, a 2007 NSERC Steacie Fellowship, the 2006 Canadian Society of Chemistry Keith Laidler Award, and an Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship (2005–2006). Dr. Scholes serves as a Senior Editor for the Journal of Physical Chemistry and Associate Editor for the Journal of Nanophotonics. Scholes enjoys basketball, hiking, photography, family and friends.

Gary Wiederrecht is the Group Leader of the Nanophotonics Group in the Center for Nanoscale Materials at Argonne National Laboratory. His research interests center on the photochemistry and photophysics of nanoparticles and periodic assemblies, hybrid nanostructures, photochemical energy conversion, and non-linear optical responses resulting from photoinduced charge separation. His experimental expertise is in the areas of ultrafast optical spectroscopy and scanning probe microscopy, including near-field scanning optical microscopy. He has received an R&D100 award, the Department of Energy Young Scientist Award, and the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers. He has authored or co-authored approximately 80 peer-reviewed research articles, and works collaboratively with scientists around the world. He enjoys traveling, nature, and spending time with his family.

Brilliant Mystery!

Silver Totem of Shame is initially set in Vancouver, which is where I live, so of course my interest was immediately grabbed. Then R.J. Harlick's wonderful writing style and story kept me glued to the book. This is the sixth in the series but the first I have read. The books in the series are all priced very low for the Kindle on Amazon right now so I bought more already. It is not necessary to read the earlier volumes to be able to follow Silver Totem of Shame; it could easily stand alone.

Meg Harris and her husband, Eric Odjik, are visiting Vancouver for a First Nations meeting. A young Haida carver is murdered. Events start to get really interesting once it is discovered that the murder victim is Eric's adopted sister's adopted son. Both Eric and Alistair the murder victim are of First Nations heritage. The action soon moves from Vancouver to the isolated and rugged Queen Charlotte Islands which are known today by their Haida name: Haida Gwaii.

Things heat up once everyone is in Haida Gwaii. The new chief is holding a totem raising and potlatch which is expected of a new chief. Not everyone is happy with the person is the new chief. Old hurts, old shames fester beneath the surface and erupt as the story progresses.

This is an outstanding mystery that fittingly portrays the current realities of First Nations people in British Columbia. R.J. Harlick has brought Vancouver, the Haida people, and Haida Gwaii to life. The islands are beautiful but desolate and the cold there is such a wet cold that deeply penetrates your bones. I could feel for Meg as the waves were crashing over the boat.

I really enjoyed the Silver Totem of Shame. R.J. Harlick is a wonderful storyteller and able to provide the reader with an authentic sense of place. Be sure to pick up a copy when it is released in April.

Entertaining & Intelligent Mystery

Alistair, a promising young Haida carver is murdered in Vancouver and the totem pole he was working on has been stolen. Meg Harris and Eric Odjik, her new husband and Ojibway Chief from Ontario, are in town for a meeting of First Nations when they hear about the death. Through an unexpected encounter, they learn that the young man was the adopted son of Cloe, Eric's adoptive sister. This encounter forces Eric to confront his past and eventually sends Meg, Eric, and Cloe to the isolated islands of Haida Gwaii where a totem pole raising ceremony is taking place to commemorate the naming of the new Chief.

Silver Totem of Shame by author RJ Harlick gives a fascinating look at the culture of the Haida peoples on Canada's west coast while providing a very entertaining mystery. There's plenty of excitement and action and lots of twists and turns to keep the reader's attention. One warning though: if you suffer at all from seasickness, you might want to skip over the journey across to the islands.

Craft's investigative-reporter-cum-(almost)-superhero may leave readers begging for another novel starring the same principals. Craft's Clark Kent (with a gay twist) is Mark Manning. He is a reporter for the fictive Chicago Journal as the story opens. His publisher gives him a deadline of less than 100 days to find heiress Helena Carter, who has been missing for seven years and is about to be declared legally dead. In the course of his investigation, Manning ends up ruling out the Catholic Church, Carter's butler (of course), her sister-in-law (who had an affair with Carter's dead husband), and the Federated Cat Clubs of America (only in a gay novel!) as culpable kidnappers. Amid all this sleuthing, Manning also deals with his latent homosexuality, has almost vengeful sex with a longtime female acquaintance, and falls in love with and makes love to a man. Two very happy endings won't exactly surprise readers, but getting to them is a lot of fun. Delightful. Charles Harmon

A Story That Hits Home

Overall, the best part of Craft's novel is its ability to make the reader think about his past. All too often Mark Manning's experiences made me re-live episodes from mine (sometimes with laughter and sometimes with tears). Craft has made Mark Manning believable because he is so like the rest of us. Struggling with the same feelings and sometimes fears. Few books today are successful in doing this. Craft draws the reader into the minds of his characters so well, the reader doesn't know it until the last page is read, and then of course it's too late. You just have to find out what happens next to Mr. Manning and his new found love Neil.
But perhaps, best of all, when I finished the book I felt satisfied. Again, another rarity in today's mass produced fiction.

Flight dreams

A wealthy lady disappears and seven years later, the courts are asked to have her declared dead so her fortune can be distributed. There is no evidence of abduction or murder, and her wealth will go to good causes. Her airline company is offering half a million dollars for news of her whereabouts. One stubborn senior reporter is convinced that Helena Carter chose to disappear.

FLIGHT DREAMS is written in present tense. Mark Manning of the Chicago Journal explains his reasoning to a junior while taking phone calls from crank psychics. He attends a lunch meeting with a lawyer for the Carter estate, then visits the remaining family. Carter bred Abyssinian cats - oddly, the morning she disappeared, her best breeding pair of cats vanished too. The bulk of the estate is going to the local Catholic Diocese. Meanwhile a reporter for a rival paper has decided to gain public interest by insisting that this is an unsolved murder case.

Part of the story focuses on the modern Church and on those who would like to return to earlier traditions. Another character is unsure of his sexuality, having reached forty, and decides to explore his gay side. There is also a visit to a pedigree cat show. That was my choice of route to track down a missing cat fancier, and I enjoyed the clues and twists in that trail. I was certain that the police would have long ago had a newly poured foundation dug up, so if they had missed that it would indeed be incompetence.

I was amused by the way that an early lunch business meeting is not too early for Scotch or vodka. I was also surprised that smoking is still allowed in offices. This adult mystery novel was originally released in 1997 but has been re-released in e-format, it will not suit cosy crime readers and there is little drama or urgency involved, but it is a good study of investigative procedures and human nature.

Best Series of the Genre

Michael Craft is absolutely my favorite author. Jump aboard for a great ride with this the first novel in the Mark Manning series. The only other series that ranks as high in my book is the Todd Mill series by RD Zimmerman.
