The folklore of Texas' Big Bend region was still in the making during Walter Fulcher's lifetime. Born in Lampasas County in 1887, he worked on the Martin Ranch near Sheffield when a young man. There he witnessed events in the last outlaw activities of the Black Jack Ketchum gang.

He also listened to legends told almost as gossip, and some of the legendary figures were still alive—or said to be alive, usually in hiding. In every village there was sure to be some ancient with a good memory and a better imagination, and Walter Fulcher heard many versions of many tales. He has set them down as he heard them, as simple folk tales that reflect the color of a wild and vivid country in 400 years of its settlement.

The book has been edited, with introduction and notes, by Elton Miles, Professor of English at Sui Ross State College.

Talk of the region

As the author says, these are stories he heard, not researched investigations. Fulcher spent his entire life in the area, resident in Terlingua. He heard some stories from Anglos, some from Mexicans, about mines, legendary figures, place names, etc. They are occasionally touchstoned on other, published accounts, but the author is just as skeptical of print as he is of speech, an excellent attitude, it seems to me. The book is short, not much more than 100 pages, and seems to have been written down by 1950.

This is a good introduction to the kind of stories that used to circulate in this country. An amateur's work, but not less useful or enjoyable for that reason.

For all of the people who lived in the Ojinaga Chihuahua, Presidio, Texas Chihuahuan Desert is a must to read. I am a sixth generation from the Chihuahuan desert and always wondered what of the many places names came from. Not to mention that the ones I knew matches the stories told for generations in my family. The Flotte - Spencer. Now, I have a better understanding of my culture and grass roots. Great Job! Great Book but I guess only the people who was raised in the Chihuahuan desert will understand the authenticity and originality of the ways the book is being written. I can't be more real than that.

riddled with errors

This is a good book overall, as long as you already have enough of a background to recognize the numerous errors throughout. I'm not talking about spelling errors, but errors like "high" instead of "low" and "beta 1" instead of "beta 2". These errors are everywhere and they would be very confusing to someone who is just learning the material. It simply was not properly proofread. At over $100, really just not acceptable.

Unable to view tables in book

I purchased this book thinking it would be more convenient. It is also cheaper than the text version. It downloaded immediately to my tablet and is easy to navigate. The only problem is there are tables throughout the book that are not visible. Above the table is displayed "rights were not granted to include this figure in electronic media. Please refer to the printed publication." How frustrating. I obviously didn't purchase the printed publication and have no way to view the tables inserted throughout the book.

This book is like talking to an ADHD kid.

This book is all over the place. It jumps around from drug to drug and gives partial information throughout the chapter instead of focusing on one drug at a time. The brief pathophysiology is great at the beginning of each chapter but that is about the extent of this book's usefulness. Some chapters don't even have dosing for the medications! The editing of this book leaves a lot to be desired as well. The has to be better options for general pharmacology for graduate student nurses so keep on looking!

a ladie's group is reading this together, and we have all been very impressed with the author's ability to portray a woman'd world-view; the author being male!

The historical insights about a woman's place in bible times, has also been very informative, and eye-opening.

We would definately reccommend this as a small-group "read".

I was given this book as a gift after preaching for Women's Day in Kalamazoo, MI. Once I picked it up, I could not put it down. I purchased 20 copies to give as gifts to special women in my life as well as during my seminars. It is a great read. I love that the author points you to the Bible. You can read the story in the Word of God and then read it through the eyes of the author. This is a must have for women and men alike.

About the Author
Carrick Devine, born in Blenheim, New Zealand, studied at Canterbury University in New Zealnd where he obtained an MSc in Marine Biology and then a PhD at the University of Otago Medical School in 1969, studying physiology/pharmacology of smooth muscle and its innervation. Following a post doctoral period at Presbyterian University of Pennsylvania Medical Center working on smooth muscle, he returned to New Zealand and worked with striated muscle - i.e. meat - at the Meat Industry Research Institute of New Zealand, becoming sector leader. He has been involved in the development of electrical stimulation for meat tenderness, quality assurance procedures to ensure that appropriate levels of tenderness are attained, establishing neurological indices of humaneness of slaughter procedures using microdialysis probes, to harmonise western and halal slaughter methods and developing protocols to reduce preslaughter stress of cattle and sheep. He now works on biosensors at the bioengineering sector of Hortresearch and is presently engaged on a collaborative project with the MIRINZ Centre of Agresearch to measure meat tenderness on-line using near infrared spectroscopy. He obtained a DSc in 1991 and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand and the New Zealand Institute of Chemistry.

Michael E. Dikeman; Born in the state of Kansas, USA. Received B.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Kansas State University and M.S.degree from Michigan State University. Professor at Kansas State University from 1970 to present. He teaches courses ranging from beginning animal/meat science to graduate level. His research interests include effects of genetics and management systems for livestock production on carcass composition and meat quality. He has particular interests in postmortem technology to enhance meat quality, and in effects of meat cookery on tenderness. He received the Meats Research Award from the American Society of Animal Science. He served as President of the American Meat Science Association, and the Federation of American Societies of Food Animal Sciences.

Carrick Devine, commenced his career with the New Zealand Oceanographic Institute measuring ocean currents and salinity patterns in Antarctica followed by an MSc at Canterbury University on the ecology of a shrimp in a sandy beach. At the University of Otago he gained a PhD on the ultrastructure, physiology and pharmacology of smooth muscle and its innervation followed by a Post Doctoral fellowship at the Presbyterian-University of Pennsylvania Medical Center on smooth muscle.

After joining Meat Industry Research Institute of New Zealand (MIRINZ) in 1973, Dr Devine worked on optimising electrical stimulation to make meat tender - a process in all New Zealand lamb, beef and venison processing plants. Subsequent research showed further tenderisation, not only required the best electrical stimulation parameters, but also holding at optimum temperatures throughout critical parts of processing. Animal pre-slaughter stress often toughens meat so stress reduction procedures were developed. Stress amelioration was shown to also occur by conditioning animals to various stressors.
Neurophysiological studies showed pre-slaughter head only electrical stunning to be humane and thus enabled the harmonisation of halal and western slaughter procedures. Dr Devine later joined Plant and Food Research and with AgResearch, successfully developed near infrared spectroscopy techniques (NIR) to measure meat tenderness on-line.

Dr Devine obtained a DSc based on his research and is a fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand, and New Zealand Institute of Chemistry and gained an ONZM for work on meat. He is currently an editor of the Encyclopedia of Meat Sciences.

Werner Klinth Jensen: Born in Copenhagen, Denmark. Studied at the Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University in Copenhagen, where he graduated as Veterinary Surgeon in 1959. After spending some time at the Danish Meat Research Institute in Roskilde, he was sent to Danepak Ltd. at Selby, Yorkshire and later at Thetford Norfolk, United Kingdom. Technical Director at Danepak Ltd. 1964-1976. From 1976 at the Danish Meat Research Institute, first as Manager of the Microbiology Laboratory, then as Manager of the Meat Processing Department, then International Relations Manager and finally Information Manager. Retired in 2000; thereafter working as Consultant for the Institute.

About the Author
Michel de M'Uzan is a neuropsychiatrist and psychoanalyst. He is a former director of the Institut de Psychanalyse of the Paris Psychoanalytic Society (SPP), a founding member of the Paris Institute of Psychosomatics (IPSO), and co-director of the collection 'Le Fil Rouge' at the Presses Universitaires de France. He has published several books on psychoanalysis, including 'De l'art a la mort', 'La Bouche de l'inconscient', and 'Aux confins de l'identite', as well as several fictional works. He is also the author of the 'Anthologie du delire' (Rocher, 1956).

About the Author
Dr. Bradford Brown is Professor of Human Development and former Chair of the Department of Educational Psychology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He received an A.B. in sociology from Princeton University and Ph.D. in human development from the University of Chicago before joining the faculty of the University of Wisconsin in 1979.
Dr. Brown's research has focused on adolescent peer relations. He is especially well known for his work on teenage peer groups and peer pressure and their influence on school achievement, social interaction pasterns, and social adjustment. He is the former Editor of the Journal of Research on Adolescence and a past member of the Executive Council of the Society for Research on Adolescence. He also chaired (2006-2008) the SRA Study Group on Parental Involvement in Adolescent Peer Relations. He is the co-editor or co-author of five books, including The Development of Romantic Relationships in Adolescence (with Wyndol Furman and Candice Feiring), The World's Youth: Adolescence in 8 Regions of the Globe (with Reed Larson and T. S. Saraswathi), and Linking Parents and Family to Adolescent Peer Relations: Ethnic and Cultural Considerations (with Nina Mounts). Dr. Brown has served as a consultant for numerous groups, including the Carnegie Council on Adolescent Development, the National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, the National Academy of Sciences Board on Science Education as well as the Board on Children, Youth and Families, and the Blue Ribbons Schools program of the U.S. Department of Education.

Mitchell J. Prinstein, Ph.D. is a Bowman and Gordon Gray Distinguished Term Professor and the Director of Clinical Psychology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He received his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Miami and completed his internship and postdoctoral fellowship at the Brown University Clinical Psychology Training Consortium.
Dr. Prinstein's research examines interpersonal models of internalizing symptoms and health risk behaviors among adolescents, with a specific focus on the unique role of peer relationships in the developmental psychopathology of depression and self-injury. He is the PI on several past and active grants from the National Institute of Mental Health, the National Institute of Child and Human Development, and several private foundations. He has served as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, an editorial board member for several developmental psychopathology journals, and a member of the NIH Study Section on Psychosocial Development, Risk, and Prevention. Mitch has received several national and university-based awards recognizing his contributions to research (American Psychological Association Society of Clinical Psychology Theodore Blau Early Career Award, Columbia University/Brickell Award for research on suicidality, APA Fellow of the Society of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology), teaching (UNC Chapel Hill Tanner Award for Undergraduate Teaching), and professional development of graduate students (American Psychological Association of Graduate Students Raymond D. Fowler Award).
