The Truth Starts Here

Let me begin this review with the recommendation: this book is the ultimate resource for a clear, non-polemic analysis of the welfare state. If you really want to learn about the ins and outs of welfare and privatization - and I mean _really_ learn - this is the book you want. You could read any five other books about welfare economics, income inequity, and social policy without getting as thorough an examination as this book contains. If you want to learn about the ins and outs of privatization and the welfare state, what works and what doesn't (and why), look no further. I have never read, nor even heard of, a more thorough treatment - which is remarkable considering that this book is accessible to any intelligent reader with a bit of patience.
"The Economics of the Welfare State" is commonly used as a textbook for upper year undergraduate and introductory graduate courses in economics. This does not, however, mean that you actually need to have such an economic background to understand it. This 415 page text starts from the beginning, covering all of the economic theory and politucal background you need to understand the contents. In my opinion, it would help to have taken a course in introductory microeconomics before reading this book. That isn't strictly necessary, though, I just think it's helpful in order to understand such serious economic ideas without too much head-scratching. In fact, the book has simplified summaries of the theory chapters for "non-technical" readers, and suggestions of what you should read, depending on your interests, if you don't want to read the whole thing.
The author warns that you may have to take some stuff on faith if you skip the theory, but trust me, you can because it's rock solid.
Oh yes, and while this may be a book on economics, you won't find very many equations in it. And every single one of them can safely be skipped without really hurting the general reader's understanding of the book. This isn't an abstract work, either - Britain is used as the major case study, with many comparisons to other countries such as the US. Specific institutions and policies are described and evaluated, with direct application to real-world political debates. Every bit of theory in the book is directly applied to relevant, detailed examples. The author intends to educate, rather than to pursuade, so the issues are considered in light of multiple ideological perspectives. After describing the major views on the welfare state, all the way from libertarianism through to socialism, Barr points out the relevance of his major points to the perspectives of these various groups.
This is a good book for people interested in evaluating just about any political orientation. It uses clear, well-justified arguments to demonstrate that market failure in many important areas is unambiguous, and that government intervention may not only be superior in principle, but often is superior in the real world. It considers these issues from different perspectives, making it clear that concerns for economic efficiency and social equity may lead to different conclusions.
The author makes no bones about shooting down all unsubstantiated arguments, not just conservative ones. He clearly demolishes a lot of liberal and socialist arguments that some services should be provided by government - if the market really is more efficient at producing something that one wants to guarantee, the government should usually pay for it, not produce it. He considers many situations, such as housing, where the historical use of subsidy and regulation rather than outright income transfers appears to be economically inefficient and inequitable. Barr also explains how some policies designed to decrease inequality can actually increase it. He describes the university system in the UK as regressive, that is, promoting inequality. While it is paid for by all and free to all, in practice the rich are much more likely to actually attend university. Those wishing to promote social equality would do best to read these arguments, so that they can avoid supporting measures destined to backfire. He even demonstrates that some major political arguments have been over trivialities. He explains how the differences between "pay as you go" social insurance schemes and those funded by one's own previous contributions are actually not all that great, contrary to much of the debate about Social Security in the US.

This is a useful book since it is clear, systematic and rigorous. It is biased because it leaves out certain arguments and are more critical of opposing arguments than arguments in favour of the welfare state. For instance, very few pages are devoted to discussing government failure and the information problems facing the government

Crude translation sounds the death knell of a lesser Zola novel

This is not the great Zola of Germinal or La Debacle or even La Bete Humain. It's an effective melodrama, though, with the great story-telling qualities that Zola possesses. He tries for a great theme, the various ways in which human happiness is thwarted both by the prescribed realities and human effort, and there's a great deal of melodrama in the denouement. I confess that I am only three-quarters way through, and the narrative will propel me to the end--that and my proclivity for staying with a novel. But the horror for me is the crude and perfunctory quality of the translation of the Kindle edition. But for that, I would add a star to my rating: 3-star Zola, because Zola rates no less ruined by inept translation.

I was averse even to light up one single star! This book is god-awful. The characters have no inner directedness at all, are merely acted on egregiously by the author. I even felt sympathy for the murderer because of the merciless harshness of the author. I found nothing believable. The majority of the violence is perpetrated by the author on his characters.

About the Author
Daniel Friedman is a well-known economist and theorist who has published widely in leading academic journals in economics, finance, psychology, and politics. Rust, about the origin and efficiency of the rules of the New York Stock Exchange and Chicago exchanges; and Economics Lab: An Intensive Course in Experimental Economics, with Alessandra Cassar (Routledge, 2004). He is a professor of economics at his alma mater, the University of California, Santa Cruz.

Daniel McNeill is an author with an international reputation. His best-selling Fuzzy Logic (Simon & Schuster, 1993) won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize in Science and Technology. It was also a New York Times Notable Book of the Year, and has been translated into German, Italian, Dutch, Japanese, and Chinese. Timely Advice for our Future

Why isn't everybody reading this book?? It's a fascinating blend of the history of markets, and the evolution of morality, especially as it is influenced by the ever-widening effects of human economic cooperation. The two authors have done some serious thinking on the subject and are also offering substantive suggestions for going forward and avoiding some of our recent missteps, like the 2008 debacle. Their analysis and advice can benefit all societies, but ours is the most promising candidate for positive change, if policy makers will study this book. Read it, and send a copy to your congressperson.

Excellent book -- must read for economists and non-economists

Excellent text. I used it in an undergraduate economics seminar that I taught on financial crisis and it is one of the few books that actually goes into not only the economics but also the ethical/moral issues associated with the most recent financial crisis. Highly recommend to anyone (both economists and non-economists) interested in a better understanding of the complex set of economic issues both domestically and internationally that we have confronted in the past, face today, and will continue to face going into the future.

Textbook quality

We have been looking for a text for some time to cover basic and more advanced topics for our undergraduate courses in biomedical science. This is one of the few books that offers broad coverage in a well written way. It is our recommended text for 2014.

About the Author

She has been married for 28 years to her best friend, Brian, and has one son, Tyler, and a brand new daughter-in-law, Kellie! Kimberley resides with her family near New Orleans.

The book was very good but sometimes i felt they started out rather slow but then they got interesting. I would definitely recommend it.

One Little Prayer by Kimberley Comeaux
Set in the south a few years after the Civil War, this is a cute story that is romantic with touches of humor that will delight the heart of the reader. A young embittered man is wounded while on his journey until a bullet brought him to the ground. When a little 9-year-old girl finds him, it turns out to bring him face to face with God whom he has been so angry at.
The Tie that Binds by Susan K. Downs
An orphan train is coming from New York any day now, and Emma is hoping she will be allowed to adopt even though she is a widow. Frank is a farmer who had long ago proposed to Emma, but she refused him. When he sees she is allowed to adopt, he ponders doing the same. Readers will enjoy this historical short story filled with adventure, romance and having a heart for the Lord.
A Homemaker, A Bride, and A Baby by JoAnn A. Grote
Lynette comes from the East with high hopes of seeing her sister and her family along with starting a new job as a governess. Yet the moment she gets off the train, Lynette learns her life will never be the same again. With hopes for a brighter future filled with love, she cares for Samuel and wonders if this man, Chase, will ever tire of helping her on the farm.
The Applesauce War by Ellen Edwards Kennedy
By the title, one might deduce this enjoyable story involves the elements of apples and feuding, which might be a right deduction. Of course, then again, it might not. One would have to read the story of two families who let a matter get out of hand when it shouldn't. The faith shared by two childhood friends helps Verity believe that true love with Pete may yet become her reality.
Sunshine Harvest by Debby Mayne
Josephine and Anna open the front door to hear the most unexpected news. Now, their lives are irrevocably changed. Daniel is a businessman and part-time pastor who not only brings devastating news, but also shows himself to be a living example of Christ's love. What will be the future of the mother and daughter along with the fruit groves that are their livelihood?

New Beginnings by DiAnn Mills
Two childhood friends dream one day of becoming man and wife or at least one does till the later teenage years. Now, the day of the wedding is here and no matter how much praying is being done feelings of love just aren't there. After the thousand mile journey to Ohio to set up a farmhouse and making it a home, the wonder of what lies ahead becomes even more fearful. Will the marriage between Nicholas and Betsy remain or will they part, going their separate ways?
Each of these stories was unique and filled with adventure, hope and believing in God. The story settings and time frames were not all the same. The one thread all of them shared was believing in God. Now, in order to believe in God the characters had to do something else, and that was realize that without God they couldn't do anything in and of themselves. What a truth to be reminded of regardless of the situation we find ourselves in. Enjoy this collection of six special tales that will touch your heart and keep you turning pages late into the night!

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

The Farmer's Bride Collection consist of six wonderful stories by six awesome authors. Each story is its own unique story, and they are fairly short so it takes only hours to read each. You will find the following six stories by the following six authors in this book:

One Little Prayer by Kimberley Comeaux
In One Little Prayers, I fell in love with nine year-old Louanne and was wishing for a new dad for her as much as she was! A very special little girl and a very special story I really enjoyed reading.

The Tie that Binds by Susan K. Downs
In The Tie That Binds, the orphans grabbed my heart! I love orphans stories, my heart just breaks for children with no home, so I really enjoyed this one. And I love Frank and Emma's romance and enjoyed this one very much.

A Homemaker, A Bride, and A Baby by JoAnn A. Grote
In A Homemaker, A Bride, and A Baby, my heart hurt for Lorette because life was so difficult for her after she lost her sister to illness and was now raising the niece her sister left behind. This is a very heartwarming story that will stay with you a while.

The Applesauce War by Ellen Edwards Kennedy
The Applesauce War, can also be called "The War Between the Fathers!" It is an interesting title none the less, so I was anxious to see what it was about. A fake feud between two dads turns real, making this story comical as well as very interesting. Can Verity and Pete mend fences between two families who have been friends for a long time?

Sunshine Harvest by Debby Mayne
In Sunshine Harvest, Anna Drake finds herself in a very difficult situation after a family tragedy and is too surbborn to ask for help. But can she deny Daniel's help when he feels God's wants him to help out Anna and her mom? Some very interesting tension here as Anna and Daniel work together to save the harvest of citrus.

New Beginnings by DiAnn Mills
In New Beginnings, Betsy no longer wants a new beginning with Nicholas, but is it too late? Will their life be a living lie? Tensions flare in this story are Betsy tries to figure out what she needs to do about not loving Nicholas. Will her decision be the right one?

!I really didn't have a favorite, I enjoyed all of these stories. I love having the short stories to read when I don't have time for a full book. And I love the enjoyable stories in The Farmer's Bride Collection. Each story is very well written and Barbour Books does an amazing job of packaging these stories into a Beautiful, Beautiful book that you can proudly display in your home. I want to encourage you to pick up a copy of this collection of stories for many hours of joyful entertainment.
