A great story with incredible art

A young woman named Jennie, her crazy Uncle Ivan, her talking cat Bulka, and a couple crazy hitmen are a few of the wonderful characters to be discovered within Domovoi, a brilliant graphic novel by Peter Bergting. Within the first few pages, Jennie is being chased through the streets by a car driven by supernatural hit men, and the journey from there only gets stranger as secrets from the past are threatened to be revealed and must be protected.

Setting the story in the old town of Stockholm gives the story a classic fairytale feel, but touches of the modern world poke out around the edges in unexpected ways. Also, if all cats were like Bulka, the adorable and wise talking cat, I might actually like cats. Jennie is a smart, capable heroine who is in over her head, but willing to do whatever it takes to solve the problem. The hitmen provide some unexpected humor, when they are not trying to kill Jennie, and the story has some good twists and turns before it's all done.

The art is stunning. The panels don't feel crowded, but there is an amazing array of details and textures. This is an artist who knows how to use space. The color palette is subdued and tends to darken subtly as the story moves along. There are a limited number of colors used on each page, but they are used to great effect as colors highlight brighten, but never overwhelm. John Arcudi's introduction to the book is glowing of the talent here and I couldn't agree more. It all feels so well planned and deliberate, and I highly recommend it.

Coming of age in a land of magic

Domovoi's whimsical artistic style is attention-grabbing, but entirely appropriate for a surrealistic story that features a talking cat. In contrast to the art (including the striking coloring), the story's narrative is dark. The death of Jennie's grandmother, Vasilisi, has unleashed evil forces. Jennie's Uncle Ivan is an ancestral spirit, a denizen of the Thrice-Tenth Kingdom, as are his family members, despite their human form. Ivan is safeguarding bones Vasilisi allegedly stole from Bolshoi Korol, but other spirits, the Poleviki, are after them for reasons that are not immediately clear. Ivan sends Jennie into hiding with the bones, but she must eventually decide whether surrendering them will restore her family's honor.

While Domovoi is an odd but clever tale of the supernatural, it's also Jennie's coming-of-age story. Granted, she is coming-of-age as someone whose immediate problems are not those of a typical young woman, but her struggle with her destiny, her struggle to choose her own path, has a universal dimension. It is a story of loss and sacrifice and courage that happens to be informed by some pretty cool supernatural characters. It is told with an economy of language; the art often carries the plot.

Despite its deceptive simplicity, the art manages to be quite expressive, often suggesting more than it actually shows. It captures a sense of motion as panel after panel depicts Jennie making her way through beautiful landscapes. The art complements the story perfectly. The total package is an impressive display of graphic storytelling.

Beautiful Fairy Tale

Domovoi is a beautifully illustrated fairy tale drawing upon Scandinavian and Baltic influences to weave a coming of age tale of a young girl. The artwork nicely complements the story, bringing the folklore tales to life in a wonderful way. If only all graphic novels, especially with young protagonists and YA in general, were this magical (and even funny in places).

Our young Heroine, Jennie, has a legacy of supernatural dealings. When her grandmother dies, she sets upon a journey to confront a sorcerer who wants returned magic stolen from him by her relative. Along the journey she is joined by her talking cat and a house spirit - and she'll make friends of enemies as she goes.

Jennie is a grounded character making the best of impossible situations. She's very likeable in her pragmatism in that magical world. And for once, we have a female character not mooning after a cute boy (I fear if this had been written by anyone else, the cat would have turned into a hunky teen). The magical creatures are both fascinating and mystical, and the path she takes fascinating.

Really, the lure of this book is the artwork. The illustrator knows how to place and work with positive and negative space in a masterful way that brings out the whimsy, danger, supernatural, horror, and comedy perfectly. And though the characters may lack some depth or motivation, really, it added to the mystery of the story for me.

The book is necessarily short but made up for by the beautiful artwork. I wish the ending was a bit more drawn out (it feels abrupt) but otherwise I enjoyed this book, especially the Russian fairytales (Rusalka, anyone?).

A fine study of a cultural region

In this objective, well-balanced study, Daniel Arreola gives us a convincing overview of a distinctive cultural region. His historical chapters provide a clear background for South Texas's strong cultural ties with Mexico, which have been maintained since Texas became a U.S. state. Arreola found that, along the Texas border, no less than thirty-two counties are more than fifty per cent Mexican-American; in twenty of them, more than 70 per cent of the people are of Mexican ancestry. The city of Laredo, a major transit point for Mexican-American trade, is more than ninety per cent Mexican-American. Arreola provides detailed ethnic analyses of some cities, including San Antonio, showing how some are geographically divided into Mexican and Anglo areas. He comments on the region's distinctive cultural traditions, including public celebrations and food (one of the many maps shows the line between the taco and barbecue cultures in Texas). South Texas has been politically distinct as well, giving birth to the Chicano movement. Some communities are setting precedents in the educational and legal uses of Spanish, in effect making it an official language. Written in clear English, this book deserves attention from those involved the question of Mexican immigration.

I would recommend this book to anyone who lives and works in South Texas and would like to reflect on the cultural factors that frame life in this area.

Laugh-out-loud funny!

Aisha Tyler is many things that I am not: tall, childless, funny, confident, fearless. But she and I also share some qualities, if you can call them that. We're both neurotic, both nerds, both prone to going off on tangents while telling a story. But let's be honest: it doesn't matter if an author and I have absolutely nothing in common, really, as long as she makes her writing work. And Aisha Tyler does just that.

Self-Inflicted Wounds is a memoir of sorts in which Tyler recounts all the times in her life, beginning at the ripe old age of five, when she (inadvertently) screwed herself over. From setting the kitchen on fire to boy problems to broken bones, she's had a remarkable amount of incidents where she can blame no one but herself. Footnotes are liberally sprinkled throughout the cringe-inducing tales. This is an excellent format for the asides that a stand-up comedian can't help but make when telling a story.

Although she often drops a mini-lesson at the end of a chapter, the best part about these episodes is that they're funny. In fact, they're so funny that I tried my son's patience more than once. See, I'm still nursing him once or twice a day. And when you're reading a funny book and don't want your nipple bitten off, you try not to laugh. But as any private-school girl knows, withholding laughter just means lots of snorting and jerky shoulders. So my kid's head is bouncing on my arm, and I'm trying to stop laughing, which is only making me laugh harder, and then I have to stop reading and use the advice from my scuba certification course: just focus on your breathing. She's that funny.

To be honest, I didn't know who Aisha Tyler was before Friends. I still haven't seen her stand-up (but may need to, since I enjoyed this book so much), but I'm a big fan of Archer and think she's pretty great on there. And now that I know how much I enjoy her particular brand of ranting, self-deprecating humor, I'm even more excited about her gig as host on the revival of Whose Line Is It Anyway? Basically, what I'm trying to say is that I was a tentative Tyler fan before, but now I'll look forward to her upcoming projects with increased zeal. And isn't that a successful venture for an artist?

All in all: Read this if a) you like comedy and b) you don't mind lots of 17+ language.

Note: Only read this in public if you don't mind people staring at you as you try your hardest not to bust out laughing.

I was laughing out loud

Was not sure what I was going to get when I ordered this book. I loved Aisha is Friends and the show Thirteen. She is amazingly funny woman who has über smart wit and yet potty mouthed. I sat up and read from e-cover to e-cover when I down loaded it. The stories are hilarious and she is so self deprecating you wonder how she is so successful, but then you here her truly honest and warm voice I each chapter. Makes me evaluate all of my own self inflicted wounds and think how they have shaped me or made me laugh in retrospect. Must read.

Tough to finish

I very much enjoy Aisha Tyler's podcast "Girl on Guy" where she engages in lengthy in-depth conversations with comedians, writers and directors. However, I found her book, Self-Inflicted Wounds to be much less engaging. Tyler has no reservations about chronicling one failure in her life after another, but for me, it's kind of painful to read. Each anecdote rings with deep intelligence, self-awareness and self-deprecation, but I found myself put-off my Tyler's frequent use of the second person ("you this" and "you that"). There are some great, wry observations of race, class and gender that I truly loved, but at times found the narrative of the book to be unfocused. She has a clear and distinct voice, and I love her as an interviewer, but it was a real struggle to finish this book.

Rabbi Lawrence A. Hoffman, PhD, has served for more than three decades as professor of liturgy at Hebrew Union College–Jewish Institute of Religion in New York. He is a world-renowned liturgist and holder of the Stephen and Barbara Friedman Chair in Liturgy, Worship and Ritual. His work combines research in Jewish ritual, worship and spirituality with a passion for the spiritual renewal of contemporary Judaism.

His many books, written and edited, include seven volumes in the Prayers of Awe series: Who by Fire, Who by Water―Un'taneh Tokef; All These Vows―Kol Nidre; We Have Sinned: Sin and Confession in Judaism―Ashamnu and Al Chet; May God Remember: Memory and Memorializing in Judaism―Yizkor; All the World: Universalism, Particularism and the High Holy Days; Naming God: Avinu Malkeinu―Our Father, Our King; and Encountering God: El Rachum V'chanun―God Merciful and Gracious. A very nice compendium of commentaries on "the" prayer.

This book is the second in a series on the Jewish prayer book. It makes the intricacies of the history and meaning of the most important Jewish prayers accesible to people with little prior knowledge and interesting to people with previous experience in the area. All the comments are very good, except maybe for Ms. Falk's, who sounds to me extremely removed from Jewish mainstream. The book has an interesting presentation, Talmud-like, with commentaries around the prayer being studied; once you get used to it it's alright. The Hebrew font is very easy to read, and the translation is indeed beautiful and faithful to the original. The only "minus" is that the book contains a few "typos" which one careful reading before the actual printing could have detected.

well done

A good guide to the Amidah from varying perspectives. Unlike another reviewer, I liked the fact that the book had some "outside the mainstream" views as well as more traditional views. I hope that the authors of the next generation of Conservative and Reform prayerbooks take a hint from this book and put in more commentary to explain what our prayers are all about; a recent set of Orthodox prayerbooks, the Artscroll series, have already done so.

Not a prayer book

Wonderful diverse commentary, a lot to learn from this text, really opened my mind to the prayers and the order of the service in which they are found. Be warned however that there is no transliteration so it is not a prayer book for those of us who don't speak hebrew, but it is an excellent study text.

The Self as Artifact

An amazing collection of essays defending non-reductive materialism and the emergence of the cultural from the natural. The argument running through the essays is that reductive or externalist accounts of humanity are bound to fail. The essays cover analytic philosophy of art, including Goodman and Danto, the philosophy of interpretation, and the ontology of individual persons. Persons, Margolis argues, are hybrid between natural and cultural modes of being, and is not prone to complete understanding on a scientific model. Extremely interesting, and quite well written.

About the Author

Henri M. Duvernoy has had a distinguished career in the field, working as a Professor of Anatomy until 1999, since which time he has been Emeritus Professor at the University of Franche-Comté, Besançon, France. He has been the author of numerous publications over several decades, and has published a number of previous books with Springer, including The Superficial Veins of the Human Brain (1975), The Human Brain Stem and Cerebellum (1995), The Human Hippocampus Functional Anatomy: Vascularization and Serial Sections with MRI,  3rd edn (2005) and Duvernoy’s Atlas of the Human Brain Stem and Cerebellum (2009; co-authored with T.P. Naidich and others). 

Françoise Cattin completed her medical thesis in 1980 and since 1986 has worked at CHU Besançon, France. In 1996-7 she completed a Visiting Professorship at Montreal Neurological Hospital, McGill University, Canada. Her memberships include the Société Française de Neuroradiologie, the Société Française de Radiologie, and the Société européenne de Neuroradiologie. Dr. Cattin is the author of a number of articles in peer-reviewed journals and has co-authored or co-edited several previous books, including Computed Tomography of the Pituitary Gland (Springer, 1986) and three editions of Echo-Doppler des artères carotides et vertébrales: aspects pratiques (Masson).  

Pierre-Yves Risold completed his PhD thesis at the Histology Laboratory, Faculté de Médecine et de Pharmacie, Université de Franche-Comté, Besançon in 1991. He subsequently performed postdoctoral studies at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, in the course of which he analyzed the anatomical relationships of the hippocampus with the septum and hypothalamus. As CR1 INSERM he returned to the Histology Laboratory (EA 3922) in Besançon in 1997. Dr. Risold is a member of the Société de Neuroendocrinologie and Société des Neurosciences. He has published more than 50 articles in peer-reviewed journals as well as several book chapters.

A punto de iniciar su travesía, Draco enfrenta la petición de un grupo de animales de llevarlos con él a Utopía y así escapar de la soledad, la soberbia, la avaricia, la falta de comunicación, la inestabilidad, etc. Sin embargo Draco sabe que abandonar el hogar con el fin resolver los problemas no es la respuesta, y por ello ayudará a cada animal a enfrentar y darle solución a sus problemas.
