Marina Goldovskaya is one of Russia's best-known documentary filmmakers. The first woman in Russia (and possibly the world) to combine being a director, writer, cinematographer, and producer, Goldovskaya has made over thirty documentary films and more than one hundred programs for Russian, European, Japanese, and American television. Her work, which includes the award-winning films The House on Arbat Street, The Shattered Mirror, and Solovky Power, has garnered international acclaim and won virtually every prize given for documentary filmmaking.

In Woman with a Movie Camera, Goldovskaya turns her lens on her own life and work, telling an adventurous, occasionally harrowing story of growing up in the Stalinist era and subsequently documenting Russian society from the 1960s, through the Thaw and Perestroika, to post-Soviet Russia. She recalls her childhood in a Moscow apartment building that housed famous filmmakers, being one of only three women students at the State Film School, and working as an assistant cameraperson on the first film of Andrei Tarkovsky, Russia's most celebrated director. Reviewing her professional filmmaking career, which began in the 1960s, Goldovskaya reveals her passion for creating films that presented a truthful picture of Soviet life, as well as the challenges of working within (and sometimes subverting) the bureaucracies that controlled Russian film and television production and distribution. Along the way, she describes a host of notable figures in Russian film, theater, art, and politics, as well as the technological evolution of filmmaking from film to video to digital media.

A compelling portrait of a woman who broke gender and political barriers, as well as the eventful four decades of Russian history she has documented, Woman with a Movie Camera will be fascinating reading for a wide audience.

Marina Goldovskaya is Professor of Film, Television, and Digital Media at UCLA, where she heads the documentary film program. In 2005, the Russian Association for Nonfiction Film and Television awarded her the Laurel Prize for a lifetime contribution to the art of documenting Russian history.

Russian Filmmaker Tells All

Marina Goldovskaya, now a professor at UCLA, was a pioneer in Russian film and documentary television. In a beautifully translated memoir, by turn exciting, frustrating, funny, and instructional, she tells the history of filmmaking in Russia, the development of cinema verite, which came with newer, more portable technology, and her own battle for equality in what was a man's world of film. Recommended for anyone interested in film, Russia, women's studies.

Not bad but not great

You can probably find most of the information online before you go. Some of the info on the attractions in Botswana was outdated even though the publishers claim it was updated in July 2013. We went in Sept 2013 and found the Crocodile Farm in Maun had been closed for over 6 months and that the museam was more of a art gallery. The maps are helpful as are the descriptions of all of the wildlife and game. Might be helpful for Namibia but was not an essential part of our Botswana trip.

Going to Namibia? Buy another guide.

Found this very poor for Namibia, especially compared to their guides for other countries. Towns left out, very limited accommodation (often no budget options), under 10 pages of information on the Kaokoveld and Damaraland combined, almost no restaurant reviews (and missing the top spots in Swakopmond, Windhoek, etc.). Almost feels as if the author didn't actually visit a lot of the areas. Get another guide, without having Internet access while travelling, this book leaves you lost and missing out on much of what's on Namibia (especially if it's marginally off the main tourist routes).

Extremely limited information on Namibia. I travel extensively and never leave home without a LP guide. This was an exception and would not recommend it. Almost no useful information on Etosha, one of the highlights of the country. Limited information on accommodation options.

On the eastern shore of Vitiaz Strait, the Cape Gloucester airfields, once captured and improved, were to support the Australian drive—but not the air offensive against Rabaul.
All that said, this volume also covers the rather thinly photographed role of Marine Air in isolating Rabaul’s air defenses and pummeling them into neurality from mid-December 1943 to the last days of the Pacific War.

Exhaustive and Complete

This is simply an outstanding addition to the field. There are other good resources out there but I found Birnie & Boyle's work one of the best. It continues to be one of my basic references - despite having become slightly dated. I recommend it with only one reservation: the authors use of endnotes rather than footnotes is aggravating. Perhaps the next edition will address this irksome problem?

Good resource

I used this book as a resource for my LLM thesis and it proved very useful. It provides good background knowledge on the evolution of environmental law in international law. I wish it had some case summaries though.

Lighter than the books sold in Europe (paper)

I love the fact that my book was printed in recycled papers and for that it was much lighter than the books printer in white paper. This was the best price I could find in USA and Europe! I super recommend this book.
