Laura Overdeck has a BA in astrophysics from Princeton University and knows numbers. Since she enjoys them so much, she (along with her husband John) decided to give their three children math problems instead of bedtime stories, and BEDTIME MATH was born. Visit her on the Web at bedtimemath.org.

A review of both books: second book more inclined toward age-appropriateness

[[VIDEOID:mo1XCD9VB4MMHIS]]This is a review of both BEDTIME MATH and BEDTIME MATH2, both by Laura Overdeck and illustrated by Jim Paillot.
The original concept is great: make math fun and interesting for kids. The author certainly has her mathematical chops, having a BA in astrophysics from Princeton and an MBA from Wharton, but these books (mainly the first one) would benefit with the editing pen of an early childhood education specialist.
Let me give an example. In first BEDTIME MATH, a problem for approximately kindergarten-aged kids is: "If you like eating popcorn by throwing it in the air and catching it in your mouth like a seal, and you toss 15 pieces but catch only 9 of them in your mouth, how many pieces end up in your hair and on the floor?" A problem for pre-kindergarten is: "If an elephant weighs 8,000 pounds, and your car weighs 3,000 pounds, how much more does the elephant weigh?" I don't know many average preschoolers that can subtract these numbers.
The second book is much better by asking preschoolers to count items on a picture or asking slightly older kids to add single and double-digit numbers. Even bigger kids have problems like, "If you sneeze at 200 miles an hour while driving at 70 miles an hour, how many miles an hour faster than the car was your sneeze?" Unlike the original book, the second book includes bonus problems, such as: "If you'll need to pee in 45 minutes and it's now 3:28 p.m., at what time will you need a potty shop?"
As you can probably already tell, the books do a great job of catering to things kids have fun with. Each flip of the page presents a story on one side, and three age-ranged problems on the other side (again, the newer book adds a fourth bonus problem).
Both books are charming and have fun problems to work through, but the second book is much better and age appropriate in its efforts. And here's something I discovered by accident: both books have glow in the dark front covers.

Clever and fun way to teach kids basic mental math

Presentation is everything--If you present math to children as a hot fudge sundae and not awful tasting medicine, the intimidation factor just falls away. These mental math exercises are engaging, witty (and in some cases, mischievous), and perfectly tailored for small children--the subjects of the word problems involve animals, sports, cookie dough, legos, and of course, the 10 second rule. The illustrations are quirky and adorable, and perfectly capture the tone of the text. All problems have three different levels, so if you have kids of multiple ages, they can each get their own age-appropriate/level appropriate problem to work (no fighting!). No worries for parents -- the answers are all provided. Great companion to the website and Facebook page, but the specific advantage of this format is there is now something that kids can 'read' along with mom and dad (and look at the pictures) while they solve their math problems and learn basic mental arithmetic.

My Kids Rate This ..5 stars, no 11, no 1,000!

This was an instant hit with my children and me. Because what do you know, math really does apply to real life! This book illustrated that fact in a fun way that got my children excited about math. The story topics were fact based and presented in kid entertaining appeal and illustrations. For example, in the "Tipping the Scales" narrative (pg22-23), it compared the biggest animal on land and sea .."African elephant weighs around 8,000 pounds, a blue whale weighs about 160 tons. A ton is 2,000 pounds, so that's over 300,000 pounds... Not that the difference matters much: If you had both animals as pets, you wouldn't want either one to sit on you" and you'll find a picture of an elephant sitting on a pickup truck and a huge whale too big for a human weighing scale. Moreover, after each tale came the math problems in three levels, easiest to hardest, Wee ones, Little kids, and Big kids. To give you an idea of the math problems, in this story Wee ones asked, "If an elephant weighs 8,000 pounds, an your car weighs 3,000 pounds, how much more does the elephant weigh?"; Little kids, "A ton is 2,000 pounds. If an elephant weighs 8,000 pounds, how many tons is that?; and Big kids, "If you have a pet whale that weighs 160 tons, how many 4-ton elephants would you need to math the weight of whale?". Hence, this book had chock full of fun and interesting narratives that is making our bedtime story time thrilling and I'm confident that it will do the same for you!
Amusing stories, clever illustrations, and challenging math problems. Bedtime now is even more fun and building confidence!
Oh, I asked my kids what they would rate this book from a scale of 1 to 5 and with resounding yells came, Five!; No, Eleven!; No, a Thousand! There you have it.
Oh, oh, oh, that's not the end of it! When we turned the light off, we had a wonderful surprise. The stars and moon on the cover page glowed in the dark! Oh my, the oohs, the aahs, and "cool"-s that came was priceless. Ms Overdeck thought of everything!!
My 6 year old especially loves this book. During the day, she'll sneak the book to her room and tries to solve the problems. Another priceless moment. I tell ya, I'm one happy mama. Thanks Bedtime Math!
