Hormones and Reproduction of Vertebrates, Volume 5: MammalsFrom Academic Press

This series of volumes represents a comprehensive and integrated treatment of reproduction in vertebrates from fishes of all sorts through mammals. It is designed to provide a readable, coordinated description of reproductive basics in each group of vertebrates as well as an introduction to the latest trends in reproductive research and our understanding of reproductive events. Whereas each chapter and each volume is intended to stand alone as a review of that topic or vertebrate group, respectively, the volumes are prepared so as to provide a thorough topical treatment across the vertebrates. Terminology has been standardized across the volumes to reduce confusion where multiple names exist in the literature, and a comprehensive glossary of these terms and their alternative names is provided.

Good for grad not undergrad level
By Hbate
I got this book to use for a class I am teaching on reproduction in mammals. It is an undergraduate sr level course however the material in this book, while up to date, is not laid out in a textbook friendly manner. Before continuing I must mention that I have only read the first few chapters so far and have not finished the entire book.

Pros: most up to date, comprehensive text out there. This book is written by some of the top researchers in the field. Uses examples from wild animals not just domestics like most other comparative books, addresses issues in reproduction, which is something I am focusing on in my class and was glad to see a section on edc's.

Cons: to preface, while I have a lot of cons it is because I am reading the book as it would be used for an undergraduate course, these cons may not be relevant if this were a graduate level class.

Book is not organized in a way that flows from topic to topic, ideas such as the anatomy of the ovary or key terms are mentioned early on but not explained until later chapters. It is written as though each chapter was a separate and individual review article and not a book as a whole. Diagrams are not the best that I have seen, needs more anatomy diagrams. Some of the writing is too wordy and concepts that I understand, such as critical time periods, I had to read twice because the words or number of words used were not concise.

Overall I think this book covers a great range of topics even if not organized well, and, while helpful to have a text written for graduate level students I think it would be more beneficial if the Text could be used at both a sr undergrad and grad level. I will still be using this text for my class as it is the only up to date text I could find that utilizes a comparative aspect that is not focused only on domestic or research animals. However i am afraid I will have to reorganize some topics and essentially rewrite a lot of information so it it more easily understood by students who do not research reproduction.
