This book is a gem

One of the most demanding tasks for a writer is how to communicate the complexity and art of human communication.
This book meets and surpasses the requirements of good training.
Often a carefully crafted time consuming lecture is 90% forgotten in two days. What a waste of energy. The role playing described in this book is the ticket to excellent training.
This is a marvelous book that will have students remembering how to be skillful interviewers long after traditional approaches to learning have evaporated.
Get it. Use it. Make a dramatic difference.

This invaluable resource is insightful, fun to read and enables practicality in the medical field

Role-playing in the medical field is an essential component of practicing modern medicine.
Dr. James Binder depicts an engaging perspective into his experience of teaching and experiencing primary medical interviewing skills WITH training clinicians. Immediately upon the first chapter, we are introduced into Dr. Binder's framework of obtaining the patient's personal story and the importance of beginning to "join" with the patient as another human being. Through careful and diligent exploration, Dr. Binder illustrates a sensible method of helping trainees through the beginning to end of role-playing scenarios. Chapters identify role-playing case scenarios, an objective(s), feedback for the student as well as provide a supportive environment for the training clinician to process and manage their anxieties and utilize self-awareness within the role-play.
This text is not just a necessary read, it is a resource and tool that can help training clinicians develop appropriate interviewing skills, self-confidence, introspection- especially to providing sound care to patients and the opportunity to connect with their patients on a deeper and meaningful level.
I would recommend this text to clinicians, beginning or advanced, who are curious of how to teach and practice effective primary care interviewing.

Excellent Training Resource!

This book is an excellent resource for those teaching or engaged in learning primary care interviewing. Dr. James Binder captures both the art and science of interviewing patients, and breaks it down into "bite-sized" learning modules, stressing the importance of respect, acceptance and compassion within the therapeutic relationship. He masterfully presents a step by step process of using role playing as the primary training tool, and shows how this assists trainees in identifying the many ways in which their own patterns might impede their ability to be effective clinicians. I would highly recommend this textbook to be used as a curriculum for trainees in a clinical program. It would be a valuable resource in supporting the effectiveness and overall quality of clinician-patient relationships.
