About the Author
William M. Bolstad, PhD, is Senior Lecturer in the Department of Statistics at The University of Waikato, New Zealand. Dr. Bolstad's research interests include Bayesian statistics, MCMC methods, recursive estimation techniques, multiprocess dynamic time series models, and forecasting.

I want to teach from this book!

I have been searching for an introductory textbook that approaches statistics from the Bayesian perspective. This book does it, and it does it well! Based on what I have read, I will be trying to offer a class based on this book. The prerequisites are reasonable: good algebra skills and a general familiarity with calculus. The lack of colorful graphics means the students have to be pretty self-motivated. Personally, I wish I had found this when I was learning statistics.

A pedagogy gem

Though quite expensive, this book is really a must-have for people with remote mathematical background needing to discover the bayesian approach. It is writtent as a complete course of introduction to statistics, but from the bayesian perspective. Personnaly, I never met the concepts so precisely explained, and would strongly advise anyone that wishes to be introduced with bayesian statistics to start here.

Very Accessible Intro to Bayesian Statistics

Bolstad's Introduction to Bayesian Statistics is the gold standard for clear and accessible introductions to the topic. If you've read other Bayesian books and felt perplexed within the first few pages, this is the book for you. It's suitable for the novice with little or no statistics background, as the first few chapters cover the basics of the field. There is even an appendix introducing the essentials of calculus, in case you haven't studied calculus or need to brush up. The book features many examples worked through in detail to take the mystery out of the material.

A common complaint about other Bayesian statistics books is that they seem to be written for people who already know the material, i.e. there's not really an effort to start with the basics and work up to the more complex material in a clear and accessible way. In contrast, Bolstad really does make an effort to teach people Bayesian statistics from the ground up.

The downside of this book, as reflected in some other reviews here, is that the material covered is not very advanced. The book doesn't even touch on Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods, for example, which form the backbone of much work in the field. So if you already know the basics of Bayesian statistics and want to know about MCMC methods and how to implement them, you would be better off with some of the recent books by Jim Albert, Jeff Gill, or Scott Lynch. Bolstad also has a more recent book "Understanding Computational Bayesian Statistics," but I haven't yet read it.

This book is perfect for someone who is either new to statistics or has a background in frequentist statistics and wants to see how Bayesian methods compare. There are very good and detailed discussions on frequentist vs. Bayesian hypothesis testing, for example.

The southern press struggled with the region's accommodation of the school desegregation ruling and with black America's demand for civil rights.

The nine essays in The Press and Race illuminate the broad array of print journalists' responses to the civil rights movement in Mississippi, a state that was one of the nation's major civil rights battlegrounds. Three of the journalists covered won Pulitzer prizes for their work and one was the first woman editorial writer to earn that coveted prize.

The journalists and editors covered are Hodding Carter, Jr. (Greenville Delta Democrat-Times), J. Oliver Emmerich (McComb Enterprise-Journal), Percy Greene (Jackson Advocate), Ira B. Harkey, Jr. (Pascagoula Chronicle), George A. McLean (Tupelo Journal), Bill Minor (New Orleans Times-Picayune), Hazel Brannon Smith (Lexington Adviser), and Jimmy Ward (Jackson Daily News). Their editorial stances run the gamut from moderates such as Minor, Smith, and Carter, Jr., to openly segregationist editors such as Ward and Greene.

The Press and Race follows the press from the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education decision to 1965, when Congress passed the Voting Rights Act. Those years saw some of the most important events of the civil rights movement-the South's resistance to school desegregation throughout the 1950s and 1960s; the Freedom Rides of 1961; James Meredith's admission into the University of Mississippi in 1962; the assassination of Medgar Evers in 1963; and the events of Freedom Summer in 1964. These essays present an in-depth analysis of the editorials, articles, journalistic standards, and work of Mississippi newspaper reporters and editors as they covered this tumultuous era in American history.

While a handful of Mississippi journalists openly defended blacks and challenged the state's racial policies, others responded by redoubling their support of Mississippi's segregated society. Still others responded with a moderate defense of black Americans' legal rights, while at the same time defending the status quo of segregation.

The Press and Race reveals the outrage, emotion, and deliberation of the people who would soon be carrying out the nation's command to end segregation. The journalists discussed here were southerners and insiders in a crisis. Their writing made journalism history.

David R. Davies is chair of the department of journalism at the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg. A former reporter for the Arkansas Gazette, he has been published in American Journalism, the Chicago Tribune, and the Journal of Mississippi History.

How some Southern editors handled desegregation in the 60s.

These nine essays take a close look at how various editors in Mississippi and the South covered the desegregation crisis of the 60s. The courage displayed by them in reporting the news accurately when the majority of their neighbors and customers felt the opposite way makes for very interesting reading. One is struck by the bravery of these editors in sticking to their sense of fair play, justice and accuracy. They played an important, and little known, role in how desegregation was finally accomplished. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to understand the South and the events of the 60s there.

Love this series

This is a great series! Good, clean and well written stories. It is amazing how all the different authors can blend their style of writing into a series and you'd never know it was written by so many. The stories flow so well together. My advice is to read the first 4 in a row and then the rest can be read in any order. I have read all in the series and now have started collecting the ebook version. Well worth the cost!

this will remain one of my favorites of this series. so often the generations forget how valuable each one is to us all. here you have young adults involved in themselves coming to realize how much we 'll need each other. plus the mature generation finding how important it is to listen before judging others.

The present study has attempted to apply the advantage of neuro-genetic algorithms for optimal decision making in maximum utilization of natural resources. Hydro-power is one of the inexpensive, but a reliable source of alternative energy which is foreseen as the possible answer to the present crisis in the energy sector. However, the major problem related to hydro-energy is its dependency on location. An ideal location can produce maximum energy with minimum loss. Besides, such power-plant also requires substantial amount of land which is a precious resource nowadays due to the rapid and uncontrolled urbanization observed in most of the urban centres in the World. The feasibility of such plants also depends on social acceptance as well as the level of environmental casualty and economic benefit, all of which is also spatially dependent. Decision making algorithms are applied to identify better solution if a problem has more than one alternative explication. Nature based algorithms are found to be efficient enough to catalyze such kind of decision making analysis. That is why the present study tries to utilize nature based algorithms to solve the problems of location selection for hydropower plants. The study employed six different types of nature based algorithms to select one of the locations among many available for installation of hydropower plant in the North Eastern part of the Indian subcontinent. The locations are selected based on their in stream resources and included in the decision making as alternatives. A methodology of criteria selection, determination of weightage and applications of bioinspired algorithms are adopted to produce utmost exertion of the available natural resources with minimum hostility and wastage of the same.

About the Author
Dr. Mrinmoy Majumder is an Assistant Professor in the School of Hydro-Informatics Engineering at the National Institute of Technology Agartala, India. He completed his PhD in 2010 from Jadavpur University. His current research interests are on Hydro-informatics, Natural resource management and Nature based algorithms. He has published more than 25 papers in various national and international journals and has authored 4 books.
Mr. Soumya  Ghosh is a Lecturer of Greater Kolkata Institute of Technology and Management, India. He completed his Master of Technology from School of Water Resource Engineering, Jadavpur University in 2010. His current research interests are in the field of renewable energy, tidal power and electrical machines.
