Flourishing: A Frank Conversation about Sustainability, by John Ehrenfeld, Andrew Hoffman

Flourishing: A Frank Conversation about Sustainability invites you into a conversation between a teacher, John R. Ehrenfeld, and his former student now professor, Andrew J. Hoffman, as they discuss how to create a sustainable world. Unlike virtually all other books about sustainability, this one goes beyond the typical stories that we tell ourselves about repairing the environmental damages of human progress.

Through their dialogue and essays that open each section, the authors uncover two core facets of our culture that drive the unsustainable, unsatisfying, and unfair social and economic machines that dominate our lives. First, our collective model of the way the world works cannot cope with the inherent complexity of today's highly connected, high-speed reality. Second, our understanding of human behavior is rooted in this outdated model. Driven by the old guard, sustainability has become little more than a fashionable idea. As a result, both business and government are following the wrong path—at best applying temporary, less unsustainable solutions that will fail to leave future generations in better shape.

To shift the pendulum, this book tells a new story, driven by being and caring, as opposed to having and needing, rooted in the beauty of complexity and arguing for the transformative cultural shift that we can make based on our collective wisdom and lived experiences. Then, the authors sketch out the road to a flourishing future, a change in our consumption and a new approach to understanding and acting.

There is no middle ground; without a sea change at the most basic level, we will continue to head down a faulty path. Indeed, this book is a clarion call to action. Candid and insightful, it leaves readers with cautious hope.

Review
"A fresh, daring look at sustainable business. It takes no prisoners and does not try to please—it simply tells the brutal truth."—Joel Makower, Chairman and Executive Editor, GreenBiz Group Inc.

"These are unexpectedly deep and moving conversations about where we can go, and where we must go, both as individuals and as a planet. It's a hardheaded account of the sacredness of the earth, and what that implies for our work and society."—Bill McKibben, author of Eaarth: Making a Life on a Tough New Planet

"This is a deeply illuminating conversation between two sustainability thought leaders on whom I wish I had been able to eavesdrop. Now, happily and inspirationally, we all can."—John Elkington, Co-founder of ENDS, SustainAbility and Volans, and author of The Zeronauts: Breaking the Sustainability Barrier

"For those who are familiar with Ehrenfeld and Hoffman's arguments, the conversational approach in this book develops nuances that take key messages about sustainability and flourishing to a new level. Those not yet familiar are also in for a treat with this easy-to-read, yet critically important manifesto."—Jennifer Howard-Grenville, University of Oregon and author of Corporate Culture and Environmental Practice: Making Change at a High-Technology Manufacturer

"John Ehrenfeld's thinking about our species and our place in the world is indeed a thing of beauty, as Andrew Hoffman's intelligent dialogue with him brings out on every page. If you're tired of stale books on 'sustainability,' read this for new insight and inspiration."—James Gustave Speth, author of America the Possible: Manifesto for a New Economy
"The most a dangerous time for any radical idea is when it becomes popular and people assume that because they embrace the idea they are 'doing it.' The window is closing for consciously altering the trajectory of global industrial expansion. There are no simple answers, but there are core questions and critical actions to take. In Flourishing, these are clearly illuminated by John Ehrenfeld and Andy Hoffman, two of the most experienced and thoughtful leaders in the sustainability movement."—Peter M. Senge, MIT, Society for Organizational Learning, Author of The Fifth Discipline, and Co-Author of Presence, and The Necessary Revolution

Hard to disagree with, but not very concrete (3.75 stars)
By A. J. Sutter
John Ehrenfeld (JE) doesn't see "sustainability" as increased energy efficiency or "green technology." Instead he sees it as "flourishing[:] ... a metaphor that captures happiness, health, and the many characteristics of what humans believe is a good life. And it captures a sense of the health of the natural world" (@22). He believes that the usual corporate tactics to promote sustainability, through sustainability scores for products, corporate social responsibility programs, etc., miss some essential points: (A) sustainability is a property of a whole interconnected system, not of a specific enterprise within it, and (B) it can't be reduced to a few quantitative dimensions. (Not all corporations have the wrong idea: he says some interesting things about a Patagonia ad campaign to encourage people not to buy the company's products if they don't really need them, and to buy them used rather than new, when possible (@122-123).) JE very elegantly and accurately characterizes the usual meaning of sustainability, deriving from the 1987 UN report, "Our Common Future" (a/k/a the Brundtland Report), as "try[ing] to hold onto the world we have now by doing things better." This means, among other things, continued economic growth. But, warns JE, such "business as almost usual" can't lead us forward to sustainability as flourishing. What we need is a "shift" in the "dominant culture" (@120), "a shift in our view of ourselves first from one of Having to one of Being, and second from one of Needing to one of Caring" (@83). This involves, among other things, changing our patterns of consumption, and abandoning economic growth as a goal.

JE sometimes comes up with some very apt "sound-bite" formulations, such as the Brundtland report characterization above, or that "[T]he prevailing belief that I am what I own stands firmly in the way of any sort of redistribution" (sc. from rich nations to poorer ones, @72). He brings critiques of consumption down to earth when he notes tersely that "Consumption is an essential part of life. Amoebas consume. All life consumes."(Id.) But the frequency of such verbal nuggets, and of practical illustrations, tapers out a bit toward the end of the book, where the the level of the discussion tends to be quite philosophical and general. I concede, though, that maybe one reason the book takes that turn is to provide a salutary shock to some readers, by demonstrating that an MIT engineer who advises businesses can nonetheless consider philosophy to be very important.

I found myself in agreement with JE far more often than not. But I confess he began to lose me when he emphasized the contributions of Martin Heidegger to his view, including crediting Heidegger as the pioneer of bringing Caring into philosophy (@89). Heidegger joined the Nazi Party in 1933, remained a member throughout the Second World War, never expressed regret for his involvement, and indeed was still writing in an ultra-nationalistic, Nazi-era rhetorical style more than decade after the war ended. To be fair, the work of Heidegger on which JE relies, "Being and Time," was written in the late 1920s, and JE mentions that he himself is Jewish and that Heidegger is "controversial." Nonetheless, it was a bit discomfiting to read his paraphrase of Heidegger to the effect that "who we are ... is determined by the culture we live in. ... Each human being becomes whoever they are by learning from and existing within a culture that embodies and endows that human being with the knowledge of the world that it takes to live effectively. To me [i.e., JE], that is getting to the essence of sustainability-as-flourishing." (@26.) Decontextualized from the rest of Heidegger's life perhaps this can sound benign or insightful, but it's hard to forget that Heidegger clearly believed that one particular culture was superior to all others. There is a faint from-the-sublime-to-the-ridiculous echo of the Heidegger/"Caring" dissonance when JE elsewhere describes "fishing as love" (@8). JE always releases (at least some of) the fish he catches -- but instead of painfully hooking them, pulling them out of the water and suffocating them for a while, and then tossing them back in wounded and terrified, wouldn't it be at least as loving simply to leave the fish alone? Or does the lovingness consist in helping the fish experience the "authenticity [that] springs from anxiety in the face of death," another paraphrase from Heidegger (@95)?

There was one point that troubled me even more, however: the discussion of the title word itself. Andrew Hoffman, JE's interlocutor and former student, characterizes the word 'flourishing' as "unusual" in his introduction (@6), and later asks JE "Where did you get the word, flourishing?" JE replies it "just kind of came up. ... It popped up first during an exercise at a personal training session where I was asked to express an important personal vision." (@22.) And a few pages later he refers to the ideas of "Nobel Prize-winning economist Amartya Sen [who] argues that well-being (or flourishing, as I write) requires the availability of a set of basic capabilities ... ." (@32.)

I don't for a moment doubt JE's sincerity that he independently lit upon the word in the way he described. But to say "as I write," while discussing Sen, of all people? The capabilities approach to well-being has been based on a notion that's been called "human flourishing" since at least the 1980s. As developed by Sen and philosopher Martha Nussbaum, it's *far* more prominent in social science than are JE's ideas, with all due respect. Moreover, the word was picked as a translation of the ancient Greek word "eudaimonia," which (along with related grammatical forms) was used by many authors to connote a true happiness -- most prominently by Aristotle, whose sense of the word in his Nicomachean Ethics is the one Sen and Nussbaum follow. Neither Aristotle, nor Nussbaum, nor the widespread use of "flourishing" in the literature on well-being are mentioned in this book. (JE's 2009 "Sustainability by Design," which also talks about flourishing quite a bit, omits both Sen and Nussbaum, and discusses Aristotle's Nic.Eth. without mentioning eudaimonia at all.) If JE's nuance is to include all of nature, and not just humans, under the term "flourishing," then the book could simply say so, while acknowledging the earlier use of the term. At best, this book's origin story about "flourishing" is symptomatic of the way it overemphasizes the uniqueness of JE's thought, without seeming fully aware of just how much work has been done by others along the same lines (namely, lots more than is suggested by JE's passing references to Herman Daly, Tim Jackson, Juliet Schor and Richard Heinberg).

Some of this lack of historical perspective might be related to the book's being published under Stanford U. Press's business book imprint. I also suppose it was the SUP editor, or lack of same, who failed to catch that Adam Smith's ideas weren't "put forward ... nearly four hundred years ago" (@41), but less than 250 years ago. In sum: JE seems like a very interesting person with whom to have a conversation. He makes many well-aimed remarks about why sustainability as currently practiced is useless and hypocritical, especially in the earlier chapters. But the high level of generality in the latter half of the book makes it seem targeted more to MBAs who aren't used to thinking about the big picture, than to readers who are looking for a practical vision of how to get off the unsustainable path we're stuck on.

A Great Read to Get the Ball Rolling
By Amazon Customer
I found this book to pinpoint a key concept that I doubt most people recognize when thinking about sustainability: the goal to Generate benefits for one's own ecological and social communities, rather than reduce negative externalities. Professors Ehrenfeld and Hoffman both articulate quite clearly what the future image of sustainability should look like from our point of view, as consumers, and from the perspective of the producers who use planetary resources. With that being said, I thought the book left plenty to be desired regarding real, concrete suggestions for executing this "Flourishing" agenda. While the writing was very critical and, I believe, accurate, I would have been more satisfied had there been clear suggestions made. All in all, however, a good read and a great start for someone interested in today's sustainability discussion.

Social Contract Theory in American Jurisprudence: Too Much Liberty and Too Much Authority (Routledge Research in American Politics and Gove

Despite decades of attempts and the best intentions of its members, the United States Supreme Court has failed to develop a coherent jurisprudence regarding the state’s proper relationship to the individual. Without some objective standard upon which to ground jurisprudence, decisions have moved along a spectrum between freedom and authority and back again, affecting issues as diverse as individual contractual liberties and the right to privacy.

Social Contract Theory in American Jurisprudence seeks to reintroduce the lessons of modern political philosophy to offer a solution for this variable application of legal principle and to lay the groundwork for a jurisprudence consistent in both theory and practice. Thomas R. Pope’s argument examines two exemplary court cases, Lochner v. New York and West Coast Hotel v. Parrish, and demonstrates how the results of these cases failed to achieve the necessary balance of liberty and the public good because they considered the matter in terms of a dichotomy. Pope explores our constitution’s roots in social contract theory, looking particularly to the ideas of Thomas Hobbes for a jurisprudence that is consistent with the language and tradition of the Constitution, and that is also more effectually viable than existing alternatives. Pope concludes with an examination of recent cases before the Court, grounding his observations firmly within the developments of ongoing negotiation of jurisprudence.

Addressing the current debate between individual liberty and government responsibility within the context of contemporary jurisprudence, Pope considers the implications of a Hobbesian founding for modern policy. This book will be particularly relevant to scholars of Constitutional Law, the American Founding, and Modern Political Theory.

Review

"Pope breathes new life into the old debate in constitutional law between defenders of liberty and defenders of the interest of the community. He shows the futility of the unqualified acceptance of either alternative as a consistent guide to constitutional adjudication, and returns to the roots of modernity to explain how Thomas Hobbes brought these two principles together to provide a solid foundation for modern liberal politics. Both political theorists and constitutional scholars have much to learn from this subtle and thoughtful analysis."

―David K. Nichols, Baylor University

"A fascinating rumination on the relationship between individual liberty and the government's 'police power' to serve the common good that will challenge readers of all political persuasions to reconsider cherished nostrums."
―David E. Bernstein, George Mason University School of Law

Worthless and convoluted
By Libertine
Edsberg complicates simple concepts and skips over the involved parts, almost as if he does not know the area he is trying to describe. The book is short and filled with non-sequiteurs and errors. The errata at the books web page [...]. lists mainly spelling misstakes, but there are huge problems in the book. As an example, Edsberg gives the wrong definition of local error for a numerical algorithm (complete with an erraneous figure to describe it). Please, please, please chose a book on this topic from a more knowledgable author. Edsberg does is NOT a university professor.

With Her Machete in Her Hand: Reading Chicana Lesbians (Chicana Matters), by Catrióna Rueda Esquibel

With the 1981 publication of the groundbreaking anthology This Bridge Called My Back: Writings by Radical Women of Color, Cherríe Moraga and Gloria Anzaldúa ushered in an era of Chicana lesbian writing. But while these two writers have achieved iconic status, observers of the Chicana/o experience have been slow to perceive the existence of a whole community—lesbian and straight, male as well as female—who write about the Chicana lesbian experience. To create a first full map of that community, this book explores a wide range of plays, novels, and short stories by Chicana/o authors that depict lesbian characters or lesbian desire.

Catrióna Rueda Esquibel starts from the premise that Chicana/o communities, theories, and feminisms cannot be fully understood without taking account of the perspectives and experiences of Chicana lesbians. To open up these perspectives, she engages in close readings of works centered around the following themes: La Llorona, the Aztec Princess, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, girlhood friendships, rural communities and history, and Chicana activism. Her investigation broadens the community of Chicana lesbian writers well beyond Moraga and Anzaldúa, while it also demonstrates that the histories of Chicana lesbians have had to be written in works of fiction because these women have been marginalized and excluded in canonical writings on Chicano life and experience.

A Wonderfully Written, Accessible, Fascinating Book
By Lawrence La Fountain-Stokes
Catriona Rueda Esquibel's book is a superb exploration of Chicana (and more broadly defined, Latina) lesbian literature and culture. She has an engaging style, and even incorporates some personal (autobiographical) anecdotes, giving us a good sense of who she is and why she cares so deeply about this topic. Readers will find in this book invaluable information and analysis. The author is to be commended for her important contribution to this field.

analysis of fiction by lesbian Chicanas
By Frida
This book is an analysis of fiction by lesbian Chicanas. The author documents these writers from 1971-2000. She includes a chronological bibliography. This book is a compliment to other texts by authors such as Cherrie Moraga, Gloria Anzaldua, Chela Sandoval, Sandra Cisneros, Emma Perez, and Ana Castillo.

Excellent Chicana Lesbian Lit Reference
By Juan D. Ochoa
I can only say great things about this book. Rueda Esquivel's thorough research and critical analysis of Chicana Lesbian literature from the 1970's to the year 2000 is breathtaking. Chapter after chapter, you will not only be fascinated, but you will be left with a wave of optimism for the future of Chicana and Chicano scholarship. If you are taking a course in Chicana feminisms, Chicana Lesbian literature, or want to read an analysis that posits gender and sexuality in relation to race and class, then you must pick up a copy of this book. This book requires you to either have some background in Chicana lesbian literature or can introduce you to the fabulous works being produced by Chicana lesbians.
I hope that this is only the first step in critically engaging with Chicana lesbian literature. If, as Rueda Esquivel comments, you want to venture out of the traditional Moraga/Anzaldua Chicana lesbian canon then I recommend that you read tatiana de la tierra's, For the Hard Ones: A Lesbian Phenomenology, and or Myriam Gurba's, Dahlia Season.

The Revolt of the Elites and the Betrayal of Democracy, by Christopher Lasch

"[A] passionate, compelling, and disturbing argument that the ills of democracy in the United States today arise from the default of its elites." —John Gray, New York Times Book Review (front-page review)

In a front-page review in the Washington Post Book World, John Judis wrote: "Political analysts have been poring over exit polls and precinct-level votes to gauge the meaning of last November's election, but they would probably better employ their time reading the late Christopher Lasch's book." And in the National Review, Robert Bork says The Revolt of the Elites "ranges provocatively [and] insightfully."

Controversy has raged around Lasch's targeted attack on the elites, their loss of moral values, and their abandonment of the middle class and poor, for he sets up the media and educational institutions as a large source of the problem. In this spirited work, Lasch calls out for a return to community, schools that teach history not self-esteem, and a return to morality and even the teachings of religion. He does this in a nonpartisan manner, looking to the lessons of American history, and castigating those in power for the ever-widening gap between the economic classes, which has created a crisis in American society. The Revolt of the Elites and the Betrayal of Democracy is riveting social commentary.

Cultural critic Lasch, who passed away before this book was published, argues that American democracy is withering in the hands of professional and managerial elites who lack a sense of social and civic values.

From Library Journal
If you don't think that democracies are being threatened from without by benevolent dictatorships, then maybe you'll agree that they are being threatened from within by self-serving elites. From the author of the best-selling The Culture of Narcissism (LJ 4/15/78), who completed this work shortly before his death.

From Booklist
Best known as the author of the surprise "intellectual" best-seller The Culture of Narcissism (1979), cultural critic Lasch died last February with the uncertain fate of American democracy much on his mind. In his final book, he locates the greatest threat to democracy in the continuing rise to political and economic power of rootless managerial and professional elites "who have lost faith in the values, or what remains of them, of the West." Lasch sees these elites driving the U.S. "in the direction of a two-class society in which the favored few monopolize the advantages of money, education, and power." He traces the intellectual history that led to the emergence of both the elites themselves and the cultural dilemmas that express the conflict between their attitudes and those of their underlings--ordinary U.S. citizens--in topical chapters on such matters as the concept of social mobility (it will surprise many to learn how recent this idea is), the agreement and disagreement between communitarianism and populism, the decline of civic virtue, the suppression of argument in public affairs, and the abolition of shame as a social psychological tool. These may seem dauntingly weighty matters for enjoyable reading, but Lasch is so pithy and cogent that he produces the kind of book that makes you want to corner friends and read it aloud to them. In discussing the issues, however, Lasch proffers no easy ways out. If he sees any salvation from the withering away of democracy and the tyranny of elite dominance, it lies precisely in salvation. That is, it lies in religious faith--not the childlike reliance upon a benevolent great father that Freud called an illusion but the assertion of "the goodness of being in the face of suffering and evil" and the practice of constant moral criticism and self-criticism in order to dispel the great illusion of modernity and its elites--the illusion of mastery, the conceit that we are the masters of our fate. A sobering look at democracy in the New Economy
By Stephen M. Bainbridge
In "the Revolt of the Elites" Christoper Lasch powerfully and persuasively contends that that the values and attitudes of professional and managerial elites and those of the working classes have dramatically diverged. Although the claim is controverted, many of us on the right (especially social conservatives) agree with the quasi-populist/communitarian notion that democracy works best when all members of society can participate in a world of upward mobility and of achievable status. In such a world, members of society will perceive themselves as belonging to the same team and care about ensuring that that team succeeds. But how can society achieve this sort of mutual interdependence if its members are not part of a community of shared values? As Christopher Lasch explains: "[T]he new elites, the professional classes in particular, regard the masses with mingled scorn and apprehension." For too many of these elites, the values of "Middle America" - a/k/a "fly-over country" - are mindless patriotism, religious fundamentalism, racism, homophobia, and retrograde views of women. "Middle Americans, as they appear to the makers of educated opinion, are hopelessly shabby, unfashionable, and provincial, ill informed about changes in taste or intellectual trends, addicted to trashy novels of romance and adventure, and stupefied by prolonged exposure to television. They are at once absurd and vaguely menacing." (28)
The tension between elite and non-elite attitudes is most pronounced with respect to religious belief. While our society admittedly is increasingly pluralistic, "the democratic reality, even, if you will, the raw demographic reality," as Father Neuhaus has observed, "is that most Americans derive their values and visions from the biblical tradition." Yet, Lasch points out, elite attitudes towards religion are increasingly hostile: "A skeptical, iconoclastic state of mind is one of the distinguishing characteristics of the knowledge classes. ... The elites' attitude to religion ranges from indifference to active hostility." (215)
Lash claims that the divergence in elite and non-elite attitudes is troubling for the future of democracy. Its hard for me to gainsay him. Yet, while "The Revolt of the Elites" is sobering - even a tad depressing - it deserves to be read even more widely than it has been. Lasch is no partisan. Conservative proponents of unfettered capitalism get bashed about the head by Lasch just as much as liberal critics of capitalism. Populists will find themselves nodding in agreement with some sections, while communitarians will concur with other sections. About the only folks who will be offended by all of "The Revolt of the Elites" are hardened libertarians and extreme left-liberals. Highly recommended.

A Modern Reply to Ortega y Gasset
By Jeffrey Morseburg
Christopher Lasch (1932-1994) was a historian and penetrating social critic. In his articles, essays and books, he challenged everyone - modern liberals and conservatives as well as the leftist and academic elite. While one did not have to agree with his conclusions, he was a man who always asked questions that needed to be answered, and raised issues that needed to be confronted. Politically, Lasch could probably be best described as a New Deal liberal, for he was very suspicious of both unfettered consumer capitalism and the rise of the New Left, whose goals and views he felt were in direct opposition to American values. He could also be described as a "thoughtful declinist" but one who always held out hope for the future.

In this book, Lasch's the last one published during the author's lifetime, he argued that America was not in danger from the "Revolt of the Masses" which was the title of Jose Ortega y Gasset's landmark book which was written in 1932, in the wake of the Bolshevik Revolution and the rise of Fascism, but that we are threatened by a "Revolt of the Elites." In 1994, Lasch had come to believe that the economic and cultural elite of the United States, who historically has insured the continuity of a culture, had lost faith in the traditional values that had animated and organized our culture since its inception. He saw a threat to the continuation of western civilization was not a mass revolt as envisioned by the pro-communist New Left of the 1960's, but a rejection of its liberal and pluralistic values by the educated elite that run its institutions and educate its children. Lasch's last question was an important one: can a society survive when a significant portion of its elite have forsaken its founding principles?

PROVOCATIVE INSIGHTS ABOUT THE WORKINGS OF MODERN DEMOCRACY
By Luciano Lupini
This book is very interesting and provocative. Nobody seriously interested in political science, the structure of society and government, the need to reassess democracy and reconsider the roles of pressure groups, should overlook this last contribution by professor Lash.
According to the author, modern democracy is not only challenged by the masses (as Ortega y Gasset stated in its Revolt of the Masses), but also, and mostly, by the elites. Modern elites are not anymore connected with their geographical and social background and roots, they have a global vision and ambition, and do not accept any constraints and limits in the pursuance of their egotistical interests, which are basically money oriented. It is now common for the leaders and members of the ruling meritocracy to base self esteem upon success, material success, and to downplay humanistic ideals such as respect and tolerance.
The ideas and perceptions of Lash must provoke serious rethinking about the effective level of "democraticity" of the modern political structure, and the remedies that have to be conceived to ensure a truly democratic participation of the citizens in the exercise or control of power and government.
I would suggest that this book has to be accompanied by other works on the subject of democracy and elitism, in order to appreciate the dangers and pitfalls of the transformation and "materialization" of the values of the elites, and its overall effect upon the system analyzed by Lash. So read this book, but also the classic works by Robert Michels and Maurice Duverger about political parties, elites and pressure groups. Also, the book by Vilfredo Pareto "The rise and the fall of Elites" and the recent "Democracy and its critics" by Robert Dahl. You will then understand better this caveat by professor Lash, within the context of modern democracy.

Well written account of the basic math of probability
By David J. Aldous
The style is halfway between a popular science book without equations, and a college textbook focussing mostly on equations. Within this style, it is very clearly written. It combinines neat explanations of basic mathematical probability facts beyond the most elementary "combinations and permutations" facts: law of averages, central limit theorem, opinion polls etc. It also has an unusually complete collection of the classic gems of elementary probability calculations (birthday paradox, coupon collector's problem, secretary problem, etc) and a few recent real-world instances (Sally Clark [2 SIDS children]; Berkeley admissions). So for these purposes, or to complement a dull introductory course, I can highly recommend this book. There are other good books with slightly different focus (and whose paperback versions are much cheaper than this hardback version): Struck by Lightning: The Curious World of Probabilities is a somewhat less mathematical overview of the interesting bits of a college course in probability and statistics; and Taking Chances: Winning with Probability explains basic probability using real-world examples such as lotteries, dice and card games, casino games, TV show games, and racetrack betting.

clarity is not given, its achieved
By Fred Child Wendell
Olofsson's book is refreshing in its clarity. Many books written in this venue tend to leave the reader 'out there', sorting out obscure math terminology or just feeling generally inadequate. Olofsson engages you humor while giving examples that come out of all of our lives. If you are not a mathematician and wondered about probability, this is your book. There is no sacrifice of quality for this clarity, however. The best analogy I can give you is asking the valedictorian of your high school class a question. When he or she answered you, they put their answer in terms you could understand, no matter how obscure the subject. I am a retired educator. After 30 years its still refreshing to see this kind of work out there!

If Only We Used This in My Probability Class...
By AYABANS
I stumbled upon “Probabilities” on the library bookshelf while looking for the required reading for my graduate probability class (“A First Course in Probability” by Sheldon Ross). However, once I started “Probabilities,” I found I did not want to go back to Ross even though Ross is pretty decent. I ended up buying a copy of “Probabilities” for my permanent collection as this is a book I can see myself savoring over and over again.

Many people (including some professional mathematicians I know) do not like probability because it is often counterintuitive. However, Olofsson uses this to his advantage, highlighting the counterintuitive results as something that makes the subject so interesting. In fact, “Probabilities” has a chapter called “Surprising Probabilities: When Intuition Struggles.” Most importantly, “Probabilities” uses these counterintuitive results to help develop insight. The book often starts off with the intuitive thinking for a problem and then uses more in-depth analysis to show why it is in fact incorrect. And it makes this surprisingly fun!

As far as learning outcomes are concerned, I would say that the way “Probabilities” extracts insight from examples is one of the biggest advantages it has over Ross. Whereas Ross presents a large number of miscellaneous standalone examples, Olofsson successfully builds up examples and clearly pinpoints the key to approaching them. Here’s an illustrative excerpt from “Probabilities”:

***
Just like in the case of the children, there is a difference between the two pieces of information. And just like in the case of the children, there is more information in the case where something specific, in this case the ace of spades, has been identified…In the first case, we are asking for the probability of more than one ace given at least one ace; in the second, given one particular ace.
***

As another example, I was really grateful to Olofsson for pointing out that a class of problems can be easily solved through the recursive use of the law of total probability. Of course, Ross uses exactly this principle in a number of examples, but I don’t believe he ever explicitly gives it a name. There is also no practical way to go through all of the examples included in Ross and skipping a key example may result in missing an important concept. I was impressed by the fact that “Probabilities” managed to cover the key examples without leaving out anything major and without having anything seem like it was inserted just for the sake of completeness.

Further, while Ross provides formal proofs of key results, Olofsson helps develop intuition into understanding why they actually hold. Finally, Olofsson anticipates challenges and potential misunderstandings and addresses them head-on. For instance, the section on random walks starts off with a fair game where two players flip coins, with heads meaning Player A wins and tails meaning Player B wins. It includes:

***
As the game is fair, it seems reasonable to expect each player to be in the lead about half the time, with the lead passing from one to the other every now and then. Perhaps the lead changes, what, 20 times or so?

Let me puncture these beliefs immediately. The most likely individual scenario is that the lead never changes and that one player is ahead all the time!

***
“Probabilities” is written in an informal and conversational style (though it does include equations). As I was reading, I felt almost like I was sitting across the table from a good friend who was telling me about probability. There are absolutely no hints of obvious watered-down technical writing. The book manages to be informal without sacrificing clarity. Typically, when I’m reading a book like this, I find that there are at least a few passages that I have to re-read because they are not 100% clear the first time. Yet I cannot remember having to do this even once in this book.

It helped that the author is very articulate and could draw on a wide range of knowledge outside of coins and balls in urns. I personally really appreciated the multiple references to other books on the topic. Instead of listing them in ABC order in a Bibliography at the end, Olofsson intersperses them naturally throughout the text. As an added side-bonus (for me anyway), the book included more references to Sweden than a typical book written by a US-based author, and I enjoyed these Sweden-centric details. One example was a reference to a story by Swedish humorist Tage Danielsson featuring Mr. Sven-Erik Average, which I looked up. Additionally, the generous references to pop-culture and real world events helped add to the vitality of the text. However, they weren’t just randomly thrown in but helped illuminate the ideas being discusses. Due to the writing style and clarity, I preferred this book to Warren Weaver’s classic Lady Luck (still worth reading) Lady Luck: The Theory of Probability (Dover Books on Mathematics).

I cannot say enough good things about Peter Olofsson’s “Probabilities.” I would strongly recommend it to anyone looking to develop an understanding of probability while enjoying the ride. And if my own experience is any indication, even students taking graduate-level probability courses can benefit from this. If it was up to me, this book (or the more rigorous textbook version, Probability, Statistics, and Stochastic Processes Probability, Statistics, and Stochastic Processes) would be the required reading for my class.
