Review of “Boy Toy”

“Boy Toy” is the third of what I think of as the “Dumont Novels,” and the fifth of seven in Michael Craft’s Mark Manning series of murder mysteries.

Set in Dumont, Wisconsin, a fictitious small city that is nonetheless familiar to me from my one and only foray into that lovely, lake-filled state, “Boy Toy” moves the reader along in the development of three separate threads in Mark Manning’s life. There is his evolving relationship with Neil Waite—the handsome young architect who seems ready to do whatever he needs to do to make Mark happy; there is his evolving relationship with Dumont itself—as both the steward of a large local printing fortune and the owner/publisher of the respected local newspaper; and, most interestingly to me, his evolving shared role with Neil as de facto parents to his seventeen-year-old cousin Thad Quatrain.

And it is this adopted gay parenthood—insofar as it existed in 2001, when the book was published—that is most central to the murder narrative in “Boy Toy.” (Note: my husband and I adopted two babies in 1996, from opposite sides of the world; so I have some history we being a gay parent.)

Since Craft seems to enjoy putting some oddball context for his murders into these books, he’s done so this time with mushrooms. Yep. Mushrooms. Just as we learned about the world of miniatures in “Name Games” (a topic, oddly enough, with which I have a good bit of familiarity, through my day job as a museum curator); we learn a good deal about mycology in “Boy Toy.”
But the title of this book is linked to a complex, and ultimately disturbing thread that winds its way through the story. Even as we see Neil and Mark become closer as partners, and as we see them both become ever more loving and good parents to a teenager, we also see uglier aspects of what it is to be gay in America. For once I didn’t fully anticipate the outcome until the very end: the double surprise of the denouement was logical and satisfying, but almost blindsided me.

This installment in the Mark Manning series is seen by the author as the most successful of the first five—following the idea that the writer gets more comfortable with the character as he controls his evolution as a fictitious human being. Craft’s writing has gotten less tentative, less stilted, as the books have progressed, and that growing ease is reflected as well in his main character’s personality. Mark Manning, who comes out late after decades of self-repression, has become increasingly comfortable in his skin, and increasingly proud of who he is as a gay man. The plot twists in “Boy Toy” would have been beyond the coping skills of the Mark Manning we first knew in “Flight Dreams.” I didn’t like that first Mark Manning—both smug and neurotic. But the Mark Manning who gives his all to protect the young man he and his partner have taken on as a surrogate son is someone whom I would be proud to call a friend.

Swinging both ways

I find myself ambivalent about this book. On the one hand, I enjoyed the multiple red herrings and the overall arc of the murder mystery -- it certainly kept me guessing up to the end. Craft populates his small town in WI (I live in one too) with many colorful characters (way more than I know here!) who have enough backstory and history with each other to make them rich fodder for this book and many others. I especially appreciated his description of how quickly poor Thad became the 'bad guy' in the eyes of other teens.

On the other hand, I am uncertain about the characterizations in the book as well as the book's use of sexual scenes. I did not find the lead character -- Mark -- all that sympathetic due to his seemingly-constant roving eye and mind and his rather inappropriately laissez-faire attitude toward his ward, Thad. The kid is going through a huge crisis being the chief suspect in a murder case as well as the focus of the town's gossip to say nothing of being attacked by friends of the deceased and Mark doesn't seem to provide much emotional support (did he even talk to the kid about the attack?) As far as the sex goes, let me state that I am no stranger to nor fearful of reading gay or straight sexuality. What I don't care for in any sexual scene is the disjointed use of it (huh? They're having sex suddenly in the kitchen before breakfast while the teenager's in his bedroom? Whoa. As a parent, I found myself shocked by that. Did they want the kid to walk in on them?)as well as unnecessary description -- in this case of the emmission of bodily fluids. I get how men climax, I don't need a description of where and how far it's going, thanks. I guess the problem is that the scenes did not strike me as erotic, but rather as gratuitious, (which has its place LOL) but this was not very well written gratutious sex. I mean, "manfruit"?

BOY TOY, the fifth novel by Michael Craft in the Mark Manning Mystery series, starts out rather slowly but gathers momentum to become a suspenseful thriller, something that indicates a story certainly worth reading.

All the usual suspects are here, that is, the characters we that read this series have come to love, like, dislike-- or in some instances, despise: first there is the suave newspaper editor Mark Manning; his lover Neil; the gay sheriff Doug; Roxanne, the attorney from Chicago; Lucy and Glee Savage, both employees of Manning's newspaper; Danny Diggins; and last but certainly not least, Thad, the seventeen-year-old who has become the apple of Manning's eye, in the best sense of the word.

The story is about the murder of another seventeen-year-old, Jason Thrush, who is found dead the evening he is scheduled to star in a summer play that also stars Thad, who unfortunately becomes a suspect in the case. But you'll have to read further to find out anything else.

As Mr. Craft is prone to do, he introduces us to a subject that many of us have no knowledge or-- and in some instances not much interest either. In previous novels we have learned much about both cats and dollhouses, but not in the same novel. Here we get quite a taste for mushrooms.

Five novels down and two more to go. Mr. Craft has staying power.

Natural products have already been the object of innumerable treatises, reviews etc., many of which are very useful. However, none of these works, often very old, has addressed this very important subject in the same manner as "Comprehensive Natural Products Chemistry". The reason for this originality stems first of all, of course, from the quality of the three editors: Sir Derek Barton, K. Nakanishi and O. Meth-Cohn, all craftsmen in this area, but also from the choice of the coeditors of each of the eight volumes which constitute this monumental work. They, in turn, have selected with great care the authors of each chapter and the result is coherent and innovative. The most recent aspects of the chemistry of natural products are addressed and discussed. The up-to-date bibliographic references allow easy access to the original sources of information. This work will be a milestone. It will not only be useful to chemists in general and to natural products chemists in particular but also to biochemists and biologists who will find much information unavailable in recent biochemistry textbooks. And, as everyone knows, the coming years will be marked by increasingly important developments in research conducted at the frontiers of chemistry and biology. The wonders of biological evolution are manifest not only in the countless living species found in nature but also in the vast numbers of organic natural products generated by them. Natural products have been of central importance to the field of organic chemistry as engines of its development and as links to the domain of biology. During the last two decades, especially, naturally occurring organic compounds have increasingly become a meeting place of chemical and biological science as the confluence of these fields has intensified. These trends are strongly reflected in the new nine-volume work on "Comprehensive Natural Products Chemistry" which might equally well have borne the title "Chemistry and Biology of Natural Products." The topics of the chapters of the compendium which I have previewed have ranged from terpenoid biosynthesis (mono-, di- and tri-), to postranslational modification of proteins by prenylation, to enzyme mechanisms, to nucleic acids (dissocation, association, folding, manipulation), to pheromones, plant chemical ecology and marine natural products. In every case treatment of the subject matter was authoritative and the writing was concise and clear. Frankly, I was surprised by the scope of the work and the extensive treatment of the biochemical and biological aspects of natural products. This is much more than an encyclopedia of natural product structures and pathways of biosynthesis. It is a modern exposition of the science of natural products from the broadest and most modern perspective. In my opinion the new Comprehensive Natural Products Chemistry is an important addition to the review literature of chemistry and an excellent resource for research and teaching on naturally occurring organic compounds. The chapters cover an enormous range of carefully selected topics and can serve as an excellent guide to the relevant area. The print, structural formulas, and figures are of high quality. About the Author

Carole R. McCann is Director and Professor of Gender and Women’s Studies and an affiliate faculty member of the Language, Literacy, and Culture Graduate Program at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). Her research expertise includes, feminist science studies, twentieth century history of birth control, eugenics, and population, and feminist theory. Her publications include Birth control Politics in the United States, 1916-1945 (Cornell University Press, 1994, 1999). She is currently working on a book manuscript about masculinities in mid-century population sciences.

Seung-kyung Kim is Director and Associate Professor and Chair of Women’s Studies at the University of Maryland College Park. Her research expertise includes gender and labor politics, Ethnography, Feminist Theory, and Women in East Asia and Asian America. The author of numerous articles and book chapters, her publications include Class Struggle or Family Struggle?: Lives of Women Factory Workers in South Korea (Cambridge University Press, 1997, 2009); South Korean Feminists Bargain: Progressive Presidencies and the Women’s Movement, 1998-2007 (forthcoming, Routledge).  She is currently working on a book manuscript, Global Citizens in the Making?: Transnational Migration and Education in Kirogi Families.

A Really Fascinating Read

This book is a fantastic resource for anyone interested in feminist perspectives. It is a compilation of feminist voices and perspectives on a variety of topics that span space and time. The book offers a global perspective on various feminist theories and practices with distinct sections on different time periods, local politics, identity, epistemology, the body and solidarity. It encompasses voices as varied as the Combahee River Collective, radical queer theorists and liberal feminists and incorporates various forms of writing from essays to personal narratives and poems.

Everyone should own this book. All will benefit and learn.

I am still in the process of reading this book. It provides a strong intellectual challenge as well as a broad introduction to the diverse field of feminism.

This is a wonderful way to expose a reader to various philosophies of feminism. It is safe to say the exposure is wide but not deep. But one will find many avenues to explore more deeply. Plus, the references to each chapter provide a ready made list for future reading.

In my case I was exposed to certain feminist thought that I otherwise would've chosen to avoid.
As a result I found out I am a radical feminist (i.e. I am to the left of Gloria Steinem).
Who knew?

This is good for anyone wanting a very strong introduction to feminism or those wanting to expand their knowledge base of what Feminism has to offer.

Everyone should read this book especially young men and women moving into adulthood.

This book makes for somewhat dull reading - it may be the fact that it was translated from Spanish into English. However, this is the most concise and thorough documentation of twentieth-century Mexican economic and political history available, and the book should be considered essential for any student, library or researcher interested in the history of modern-day Mexico.

basic training for your finances

The author is an Iraqi War vet and Certified Financial Planner. He says he was overwhelmed when he first joined the Army, but by the time he was in Iraq dealing with deadly situations, the preparation and training he received in Basic Training gave him the knowledge and instincts to survive and thrive in Baghdad.

Back in civilian life as a CFP, he wrote this book as a kind of Basic Training for Personal Finance.

Since it's impossible to cover every possible personal finance scenario in a short book, Rose gives the reader enough fundamental PF knowledge to handle their own unique situations with confidence.

I've read many other books on PF. Many are so dense and boring that I abandoned them after a few chapters. I didn't have that problem with Rose's book. The book is very readable. The author interweaves stories of his time in the Army and his own personal failures (financial or otherwise), then offers up the lessons he learned and how those lessons can be applied to our own finances. The easy-to-read and entertaining prose makes all the financial stuff go down easier.

To sum up:
1) This book teaches you the fundamentals of personal finance.
2) It's easy to read and entertaining; and the financial advice is easy to understand and apply.

The perfect book to whip you into financial shape

Ready to take charge!

I wasn't sure what to expect from this, but couldn't resist the camouflage piggy on the front! :)

Okay, first things first, while the author does share a lot of his military background in the book, you do not have to be in the military to be able to apply the book to your finances. The author used personal stories in a way that made it very relatable and that anybody could follow the action steps in the book.

What I Really Liked

Each section has a Go/No section that gives you clear action steps to take. I'm the type of person that needs a checklist to follow and this was a clever way of doing so.

I learned more about credit scores that I ever thought I would want to know, but thankful that I did.

Loved how the author talked about finding a "Battle Buddy" to hold you accountable. This is spot on!

What I Didn't Like

There wasn't much about the book I didn't like, BUT I would have like to see more on the right time to buy a home. The author did have some good tidbits in there and highlighted a story of someone that bought too much home. I know there are different types of mortgages (which all confuse me) and that's where I would have liked to see more.

Other than that, it was a great read and I think will help a lot of people.

About the Author
Dr. David Norris has done research in environmental endocrinology and neuroendocrinology for more than 50 years. Dr. Norris is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Integrative Physiology at the University of Colorado. He received his bachelor’s degree from Baldwin-Wallace College and his Ph.D. in 1966 from the University of Washington. Dr. Norris has worked in the area of forensic botany with Dr. Jane H. Bock, since 1982, primarily on developing the use of plant cells in the gastrointestinal tract to aid in homicide investigations. Dr. Norris and Dr. Bock have been involved in investigations in numerous states as well as throughout the State of Colorado. Dr. Norris has been certified as an expert witness in this area for the State of Colorado. With Dr. Bock, Dr. Norris also has consulted on other botanical evidence for criminal investigations. He was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences in 2014.

Kristin H. Lopez teaches human reproductive biology through the Department of Integrative Physiology at the University of Colorado-Boulder. With a background in comparative reproduction and endocrinology, she is an editor of the fi ve-volume work Hormones and Reproduction of Vertebrates (Academic Press, 2011). Her ongoing work with Colorado Diversity Initiative promotes increased access to higher education of underrepresented students in STEM.
