Even in as bloody and bluntly violent a war as Americans encountered in the Pacific, Iwo Jima, the ultimate expression of death and mayhem, stands out. It was in a class by itself, a meatgrinder smashed by a blunt instrument at exceedingly high cost. Relying upon a purely attritional strategy of “defend and die,” Iwo's Japanese commander oversaw the construction of thousands of concrete bunkers, pillboxes, blockhouses, and other fighting positions as well as multistory underground command centers and barracks, some as deep as seventy-five feet.
By D-day, February 19, 1945, most of these formidable defenses had been interconnected by eleven miles of underground passageways. Manning these positions were twenty-three thousand Japanese army and navy troops, many of them elite veterans of combat in the Pacific and China. Hundreds of mortars, artillery pieces, and rocket tubes had been painstakingly preregistered, allowing them to hit virtually any spot on the island with their first shot.
The defenders had bonded into a brotherhood born of the hardship they endured building bunkers and underground passageways in the extreme heat laced with sulfurous fumes of the volcanic island. In the words of one Japanese soldier, Iwo “was an island of sulfur, no water, no sparrow, no swallow.” Beyond that, each defender took an oath to fight to the death, to give no ground for any reason.
Following a seventy-four-day air and naval bombardment that the American high command believed had put the bulk of the Japanese defenders at least temporarily out of action, two veteran regiments of the 4th Marine Division alongside two regiments of the newly formed 5th Marine Division—eight battalion landing teams in all—led the way toward the island. Aircraft, battleships, cruisers, and destroyers pummeled ground targets near and far from the landing beaches. As the first wave of Marine-laden amphibian tractors climbed ashore, nearby gunboats fired hundreds of rockets to suppress enemy fire.
Nothing happened. There was no return fire. No Japanese fired at the ships offshore, nor at the oncoming waves of amphibian tractors, nor at the Marines, who were surprised to learn as their feet touched down that all of southern Iwo Jima was covered in a thick mantle of black volcanic ash that offered no purchase for their feet or their shovels.
Shortly, when the nearly eight thousand newly landed Marines had stopped along the shoreline to regroup, every Japanese gun and mortar within range opened fire on the exposed invaders. The gunfire did not die for thirty-four of the bloodiest days of the Pacific War.

good captions

The photos are great. But the captions bring them to life. After all, most of the photos are already on the Internet. Before I bought the book, I had already downloaded most of the photos from the Internet, so I recognized them immediately in the book. The captions add a wealth of background to these now famous photos. I want to thank the author for his many hours of research.

Another outstanding job by Eric Hammel. Seventieth anniversary was yesterday. I was a boy of nine when the battle took place; I still remember the headlines in the newspapers when Suribachi was taken and Old Glory fluttered over Iwo Jima.

Claire M. Renzetti is the Judi Conway Patton Endowed Chair in the Center for Research on Violence Against Women, and Professor of Sociology, at the University of Kentucky. She is editor of the journal Violence Against Women; co-editor of the 'Interpersonal Violence' book series for Oxford University Press; and editor of the 'Gender, Crime and Law' book series for Northeastern University Press. Her recent research focuses on religiosity and intimate partner violence, and the provision of services for domestic sex trafficking victims.

Great discussion of valuation methods.

This book is an elegant and thoughtful presentation of the diverse ideas commonly used
to value businesses that have no obvious market price. The author is a practicing consultant in the area,
and the work is both erudite and appealing as a meditation on a consulting economist's attempt to
tame divergent perspectives and methods. The book is quite scholarly and modern, and the text has plenty of
formal mathematics without being excessively technical -- a free (extensive!) companion supplement provides
additional supplementary technical content.

For the typical business valuation consultant, the book may seem at times daunting -- it never shies away from
heavy theoretical concepts -- and perhaps overly concerned with the limitations of popular valuation methods.
But for the consultant who is an economist at heart, the book is a delightful query into problems of
economic theory when applied to business valuation. I hope that more economists, consultants and non-consultants,
will enjoy reading it as I have.

The lively and insightful discussion of modern valuation methods, plus the supporting quantitative analysis, is well worth
the purchase price of the book. As a bonus, Anderson takes the extra step to suggest a possible remedy for some shortcomings
he sees in existing methods. This remedy, which he calls the value functional approach, restates the business valuation
problem as a valuation + business decision problem, making explicit the importance of good business decisions for
firm value. This adds complexity, inherently, but he simplifies the exposition somewhat by focusing on stable/stationary decision/value problems. If the business decision ("now") is held fixed, the situation reduces to a business (current and future earnings steam) valuation problem, and the new method becomes indistinguishable from more conventional economic methods of business valuation.

The new method addresses two problems (valuation and business decision) at once, and may be useful to consultants working on business decisions or public policy, For consultants interested only in business valuation, the new method may not be of interest, but it occupies only the last two chapters of the book. The first twelve chapters are all very relevant to mainstream business valuation, and the technical appendix makes them even more valuable!

A Tool for the Academic Turned Practitioner

As a newly minted economist with a primarily academic background, this book filled the chasm between academic usage and real world application of the variety of quantitative, modeling, and analytical skills taught in most economics graduate programs. I found it most useful to read the book with a notepad to log ideas on how to put to use the procedures outlined in the text. Mr. Anderson succinctly sums up traditional valuation methods, their flaws, their strengths, and gives the reader insight into what valuation techniques best apply to many situations and which do not. I would highly recommend this book and the author's other works.

Paul Craig, QC FBA is Professor of English Law at St John's College, Oxford. Paul is one of the foremost scholars on European Law and Administrative Law. His recent book The Lisbon Treaty: Law, Politics, and Treaty Reform (OUP, 2010) is the definitive work on the Treaty of Lisbon.

Grainne de Burca is Professor of Law at Harvard Law School and a leading expert on European Union Law, European human rights law, and European and transnational governance. Professor de Burca has written widely on European Union Law and is co-editor of the Oxford University Press book series Oxford Studies in European Law.

Definitive but boring

I bought this book because it was recommended by the University of Maastricht (Netherlands) as a textbook to study for the entrance exam that must be passed for non-lawyers to take their Master's course in European Law. I also recently saw it as part of the library of the Munich Intellectual Property Law institute - a program I am also considering.

This book provides definitive coverage of European law and some community institutions. The index, table of cases and acronym definitions are thorough. The history of the European Union and European institutions is laid out and important paragraphs from numerous European Court decisions are quoted and their implications are analyzed.

It is also incredibly boring to read. No author can save the mind-numbing decisions of the European Court. The convoluted and nearly impenetrable language is almost beyond mortal understanding. However, the analysis is also very dry - and while the cause of objectivity is a noble one, an occasional subjective opinion can make a book far more readable. The authors also occasionally refer to cases before explaining them - giving the impression that the book was, at least partially, compiled from previously written articles. This is a bit irritating - particularly in a 3rd edition, you would think that sort of thing would have been filtered out in the previous two versions.

Despite its flaws, this book is useful as a reference and has value for anyone making a serious study of European Law. I would not recommend trying to read it cover-to-cover. How about taking a stand in the next edition? Spice things up a little. In Hartley's, European Union Law in a Global Context, the author makes his point of view known throughout the book, and while the reader may not always agree - it makes the material ever so much more interesting. It would be nice to see something similar from Craig and De Burca, particularly since this book appears to be considered definitive by at least 2 European academic institutions.

Simply The Best

I used this book in England where it is the standard text. I'm now studying EU law in the US and am struggling through Bermann, Goebal et al (West 2002). Craig & De Burca is a clear and comprehensive exposition of all the substantive EU law. It also provides some structural background on the EU, though admittedly not as much as the Bermann book and therefore possibly not as much as is necessary for a standard US law school course. Nevertheless for anyone who wants a clearer understanding of EU law, I cannot recommend this book more highly.

About the Author

GILBERT M. MASTERS received his PhD in electrical engineering from Stanford University and has taught courses there for over three decades on energy and the environment, with an emphasis on efficiency and renewables. He is currently Professor Emeritus in the Atmosphere/Energy Program in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Stanford University. He is the author of several books on environmental engineering and energy for sustainability.

Broad coverage of many systems

Required for course. Got the kindle version, think the hardcopy might have been easier to read but the search function was useful.

This book is not the best text

I took a renewable energy class that used this book. There are good textbooks and bad ones and this one is the latter. Mr. Masters attempts to cover too many topics in one book and does a poor job at describing any of these topics in enough detail to be useful. The first chapter starts out with a review of the economics of the power industry. Our instructor for this section was previously the CFO of a large midwest utility and he cautioned us that some of the data represented in the book was wrong. He also mentioned that some of the calculations were questionable. So that was the first chapter.

The second chapter attempts to review / teach basic electricity and magnetic circuits. This area of study should not be relegated to a single chapter in a book. I am an EE/Physics major and I was confused as who this book is written for after reading this chapter. If you don't know circuits, I'm pretty sure this overview is frustratingly brief. If you do know circuits you are left to wonder why this chapter is included in the book.

As the chapters progress more and more material is introduced in a similar way. If you know physics great, otherwise you are introduced to many complex concepts like valence electrons and pn junctions in 2 to 3 pages, wow.

The problems are the worst, Mr. Masters wants his readers to make large leaps to be able to solve the given problems. He figures that the reader is at the point, after being briefly introduced to topics, can then make the assumptions of a seasoned electrical engineer / physicist / CFO / contractor to work through his problems. He also enjoys asking questions where the data is not in the units described in the text so the reader must first convert the units before starting the problem. It would seam that in the least, this book would try to show the reader how to convert what one is left to assume are industry standard units for renewable energy from one form to another but this is always left to the reader.

Excellent Book for Power Systems and Renewable Energy

A very solid book for understanding the basics of power systems, including detailed chapters and examples dedicated to the early basics (Ohm's Law, voltage dividers, motors, inductance and capacitance equations) of circuit and E&M theory. The examples presented are simple, but real-world applicable, including some nice forays into the economics behind the various power systems.

I am a grad student focusing on optics and photonics, so power systems are completely new for me. I can't claim to have finished the book yet, but so far it's been a very comprehensible tool and I have learned a lot.

Fabrizio Mejía Madrid nació en 1968 en México. Escritor y periodista, sus intereses oscilan entre la política y la literatura, siendo colaborador de los medios más influyentes de su país: Proceso, Reforma, Letras Libres, Gatopardo o Chilango entre ellos, y desde hace más de quince años es autor de una columna literaria en el diario La Jornada. Su trabajo como escritor ha sido incluido en varias antologías como la de la Universidad de Wisconsin The Mexico City Reader o la editada por Carlos Monsiváis A ustedes les consta. Es también autor de varios libros de crónicas: Entre las sábanas (1995); Pequeños actos de desobediencia civil (1996) y Salida de emergencia (2007) y de dos novelas: Hombre al agua (2004) con la que ganó el premio Antonin Artaud y El rencor (2006). Y ya que las listas están tan de moda, señalaremos que en el Hay Festival de 2007 fue elegido uno de los 39 escritores menores de 39 años que definirán la literatura Latinoamericana del Siglo XXI.

Interesante Novela

Un entretenido libro de Fabrizio Mejía que recopila los secretos a voces del monopolio televisivo más grande de Latinoamérica: Televisa.
Bien documentado y de ágil lectura, es una lectura recomendable. Aunque es lógico de esperarse, quedan cortas algunas historias y varias se quedan en anécdotas.
Para leer y enterarse del lado oscuro de la televisión.

Excellent book ,with a lot real information about televisa and Azcarraga familly.
Este libro realmente destapa todos los vericuetos de lo que ha sido televisa desde su inicio , muy ameno y muy informativo , narra sobre el inicio de la fortuna de los azcarraga de sus artistas y de como se manejan las cosas en Mexico, Excelente narracion.

I wonder if more mexicans realize the lack of knowledge we have about our condition of TV slaves, it is a shame that we as fathers do not teach our sons not to watch this kind of TV programs.
