Place is one of the most fundamental concepts in human geography. This short introduction marries familiar everyday uses of the term with the more complex theoretical debates that have grown up around it.

This text makes debates about intelligible to students, using illustrations from the news, popular culture, and everyday life as a way into more abstract ideas. It traces the development of the concept of place from the 1950s through its subsequent appropriation by cultural geography and the linking of place to politics. Substantial parts of exemplary papers by Doreen Massey and David Harvey are included as a focus for discussion, and the author also considers empirical examples of ways in which the concept of place has been mobilised in research.

Teaching and learning aids include an annotated bibliography, lists of key readings and texts, a survey of web resources, and suggestions for pedagogical resources and student projects.

About the Author
Tim Cresswell is Professor in Social and Cultural Geography at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth. He is the author of In Place / Out of Place (1996) and The Tramp in America (2001). He is also the co-editor of Mobilizing Place. Placing Mobility (2003) and Engaging Film (2002).

I wish this was a great deal better than it actually is

I'm coming out of a many-year hibernation as regards Amazon reviews to warn you away from this book, and it doesn't give me any pleasure to do so.

I was considering it as a basic text for students in my ITP course "Urban Experience in the Networked Age," who are at graduate level, but generally won't have had much in the way of background in geography. I found the notion of a brisk overview of conceptions of place pretty appealing, and still do. And there are, indeed, a lot of things to like in this book -- it functions very well as an annotated bibliography, albeit an expensive one.

Why no more than that? Unfortunately, in Cresswell's hands, the mischaracterizations (particularly of Lefebvre and Heidegger) crop up early, continue throughout, and would require so much repair and backfill to correct that in the end it's just not worth my time as an instructor. The mischaracterization of work I am acquainted with was serious enough that I began to doubt Cresswell's gloss on writers and thinkers I wasn't familiar with.

There are dozens of typos (among other howlers, Heidegger's Dasein is repeatedly rendered "desein"), sentences go unpunctuated, and beyond matters of copy, the volume stands badly in need of an editor. "Activities and forms of human life and culture which threatened regional and place-based distinctiveness were thus a threat" (p. 18)? You don't say.

The tragedy here is that I'm sure Cresswell's aims and goals are largely identical with my own, and I don't think for a second he set out to write a bad book. I really wish I could wave a magic wand and turn "Place" into the book its author and I both clearly wanted it to be, but sadly, that's beyond my abilities.

Very Helpful

Cresswell's volume is one of the most helpful for those starting out with discussions of place. He deftly moves between the complexities, central figures, and history of place. Cresswell helpfully summarizes many of the arrayed arguments pointing to differences and similarities. Perhaps one of the most helpful components of the text is the Chapter 5 resources for further study of place including books, papers, journals, other approaches, as well as, student projects and exercises to grapple with concepts and practice of place.

Interesting Sense of Humor

The author has a sense of humor that catches you off-guard when you're reading. This a good book to start off a Rhetoric of Place class, or begin your study of place. Most of the authors referenced in the book are people that I come across again and again in my readings. Great summary book that spans across dozens of lead-aways from discussions of the "other" to being "out of place" and "non-places" etc. Cresswell does a brilliant job of making it all cohesive. I wish he would have added more examples for his chapter on Harvey and Massey, but other than that, he makes some wonderful connections that make it easier to delve into a confusing topic.

About the Author
Dr. David Norris has done research in environmental endocrinology and neuroendocrinology for more than 50 years. Dr. Norris is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Integrative Physiology at the University of Colorado. He received his bachelor’s degree from Baldwin-Wallace College and his Ph.D. in 1966 from the University of Washington. Dr. Norris has worked in the area of forensic botany with Dr. Jane H. Bock, since 1982, primarily on developing the use of plant cells in the gastrointestinal tract to aid in homicide investigations. Dr. Norris and Dr. Bock have been involved in investigations in numerous states as well as throughout the State of Colorado. Dr. Norris has been certified as an expert witness in this area for the State of Colorado. With Dr. Bock, Dr. Norris also has consulted on other botanical evidence for criminal investigations. He was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences in 2014.

Kristin H. Lopez teaches human reproductive biology through the Department of Integrative Physiology at the University of Colorado-Boulder. With a background in comparative reproduction and endocrinology, she is an editor of the fi ve-volume work Hormones and Reproduction of Vertebrates (Academic Press, 2011). Her ongoing work with Colorado Diversity Initiative promotes increased access to higher education of underrepresented students in STEM.

Original, ground-breaking, very stimulating. This takes the ...

Original, ground-breaking, very stimulating. This takes the study of Afro-Caribbean religion and culture to a new level. I just wish his editor had encouraged him not to write sentences, on every page, of 60 or even 75 words. One commences such a sentence as if contemplating a mountain that has to be climbed, or a dense thicket that has to be hacked through, in the midst of which, somewhere, one will find subject and verb.

Glad I read it.

Okay. How did a life-long "lefty" Democrat like me decide to download, read, and review Jerome Corsi's book about the 2012 election, "What Went Wrong? The Inside Story of the GOP Debacle..." And, to give it 4 stars? Well, because I was trying to find an answer to the question that has puzzled me since Election Day; "how and why was the Romney campaign so certain they were going to win?" Corsi's book did give a bit of an answer.

Jerome Corsi is the Republican behind the deplorable 2004 "Swiftboat" ads. He has also questioned Obama's credentials in becoming president in 2008 in several over-the-top books. He also KNOWS the president and the Democratic Party cheated in registering "illegal aliens" to vote (doesn't the state actually register people to vote?) and that ACORN was responsible for the other acts of Democratic-led mayhem. Oh, and that Obama practiced "identity politics" and promised voters all sorts of "free stuff" if they voted for him. Hey, I'm an old white lady and I voted for Obama; where's MY free Ipad?

But, at least, he refers to the Democratic Party by its rightful name, rather than the "Democrat Party". And his book, when he stays away from the craziness, is actually a very good read. He and I both opposed the candidacy of Willard "Mitt" Romney - though for completely different reasons and he has ideas for the future of the Republican Party on the national level that I completely support. Again for different reasons. In his book, Corsi gave grudging approval of the Obama campaign's successful tactics. He lauded the much-vaunted "ground game" and the massive computer system (Narwal) that OFA built up and tested, retested...and tested again, making sure it would work. The Republicans had ORCA, also named after a whale, but only set to use it on Election Day. It "crashed" the first time it was put to work, and millions of potential votes were lost. (Curious that the campaign didn't know or care about early voting and that ORCA should have been put to work weeks earlier, identifying Romney-voters and getting them to the polls.) Some of the reasons Corsi gives for Romney's defeat are "what if's". Sort of like "if" my aunt was a man, she'd be my uncle.

Jerome Corsi does touch on the "internal polls" that Mitt Romney and his campaign depended on - solely, it would seem - in predicting their victory. They expected a victory - and a blowout if Dick Morris was to be believed - until "victory" became...defeat. Romney did give a very gracious concession speech and Barack Obama retained the presidency. Corsi goes on to talk about what the Republican party can do "next time" to win. He quotes Phyllis Schlafly and some other Republican stalwarts about the future. Fine, Jerome, follow their advise...

But, one thing that Jerome Corsi is correct about is the future of the Republican Party on the state and local levels. Any Democrat who isn't scared stiff about the power that the Republican governors and state officials have amassed since 2010 has his head in the sand. And this is the reason that Democratic voters and politicians should read his book. We have to know our opponents and what they're thinking. And accomplishing.

I assume I'm one of the few "lefties" to buy, read, and review Jerome Corsi's book. But I'm glad I did. It was a good read - and while I didn't agree with most of it - it did answer some questions I had about 2012 and 2016.

Somewhat interesting...

This is a story of horse races and the margins of inches. By recent results, it seems that's what wins elections in a 50-50 polarized nation. Surprisingly, given Corsi's obvious rightward bias, he quite accurately lays out the landscape of national voting patterns these days. Our voting patterns are largely determined by population density with highly dense metro areas voting for Democrats and sparsely populated rural areas voting Republican. Suburbs are the transition area with inner suburbs leaning left and outer exurbs right. This result has been very robust over the past four presidential election cycles. Thus, our politics has much less to do with ideological identities, and more to do with lifestyle choices regarding family formation that differ between city and country.

But geography is correlated with political preferences and subcultural identities, i.e.: country music vs. urban rap; Ford pickups vs. hybrids; beer vs. wine; mega-churches vs. Starbucks; hunting vs. symphony, etc. And in politics it's so much easier to push those identity buttons, which is what political operatives do to herd voters. (It also incites readers and Amazon reviewers.) The media has become an eager co-conspirator in its hunt for conflict narratives.

Obama himself has become a willing practitioner of these tactics as perfected by Chicago machine politics, where the objective is always the preservation of the machine. So, the Obama campaign style has been to divide and conquer political constituencies with the ultimate goal of obliterating the opposition under the Orwellian slogan of "Hope and Change." How? By "buying" votes and influence through patronage. Even after winning two elections, he's still in attack mode against an almost irrelevant and divided opposition. Why? Because the machine has a freehand if it can drive the opposition out of existence and rule as one-party government. This is how Tammany Hall did work and Chicago currently works and how the liberal left is convinced it can prevail, despite casualties like Detroit. We see it today in Obama's policy proposals to address the weak results of five years of economic policy: the 13th extension of unemployment benefits and a rise in the Federal minimum wage. Regardless of the relative social justice merits, these policies are wholly inadequate in dealing with the slow growth results of the latest recovery and the growing inequality that has resulted from 5 years of monetary re-inflation policy and government borrowing and spending. The solution to a failed policy is to double down on that failure in the hopes of growing and cementing a dependent political constituency. Seems to be working so far (except for that Detroit debacle).

On the other hand, I'm not convinced by Corsi's trumpeting of Phyllis Schafly's "Choice, Not an Echo" campaign for conservative values. Sympathetic, yes, but not convinced this appeals to a majority of Americans these days, at least not until we experience a collapse like the former USSR and Eastern Europe. In the meantime, we need a more nuanced approach than those on offer by the Left and Right establishments. Our problem is a national political class that has lost touch with the average middle-class American citizen. Both Corsi and Schafly would agree, they just don't seem to have the right answers.

One remarkable take-away from Corsi's exposition of modern micro-target campaigning is the stark contrast between the Obama election campaigns and the disastrous roll-out of Obamacare. How did these geniuses of modern technology screw up a simple healthcare website that Amazon could have designed in a month? That should tell us a lot about the political priorities of our present leaders: it's all about the win and establishing a permanent powerbase. Good governance through policy? Once passed, it's passé.

About the Author

James Crawford is Whewell Professor of International Law and a Fellow of Jesus College in the University of Cambridge and concurrently Research Professor of Law at LaTrobe University. He previously held chairs at Adelaide and Sydney. He is a Senior Counsel (NSW) and also a member of the English bar, practicing from Matrix Chambers. He was the first Australian member of the United Nations International Law Commission and was responsible for the ILC's work on the International Criminal Court (1992-4) and for the second reading of the ILC Articles on State Responsibility (1997-2001). In addition to scholarly work on statehood, collective rights, investment law and international responsibility, he has appeared frequently before the International Court of Justice and other international tribunals, and is engaged as expert, counsel and arbitrator in international arbitration. From 1995-2003 and from 2006-10 he was Director of the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law in the University of Cambridge.

About the Author
PAOLO BRANDIMARTE is Professor of Quantitative Methods for Finance and Logistics at Politecnico di Torino in Italy. He is the author of several publications, including five books, on the application of optimization and simulation to diverse areas such as production management, telecommunications, and finance. Dr. Brandimarte has extensive teaching experience in engineering and economics faculties, including master's and PhD-level courses.

Great all around book and excellent reference

I am using this as a secondary reference for a half-semester Matlab and Optimization course and it has been invaluable. The writing is crystal clear, the examples and code are pretty close to perfect for every section. The author writes in a very intuitive fashion and of the sections I have covered I don't think I have been lost or confused once, which in this field is uncommon.

This is not really an introductory book for finance and if you read the preface, Brandimarte does explain that the book complements and does not replace more specific texts. I have been seen most of the material in this book covered in at least a cursory fashion in my Financial Engineering program and it makes a difference, so I would recommend that you are familiar with the material covered in Hull's "Options, Futures and Other Derivatives" or Neftci's "Principles of Financial Engineering" and Neftci's "Introduction to the Mathematics of Financial Derivatives" or similar texts.

You also won't be able to get away without having at least some intermediate level linear algebra. You don't have know it well but concept such as conditioning, LU and cholesky factorization should ring a bell. On the other hand some topics such as optimization I feel are covered very solidly. I am using "Optimization Methods in Finance" by Cornuejols and Tutuncu and although it is a great book I have to say that the examples in Brandimarte's book are much better and more intuitively explained, although clearly not in the same detail.

My only gripe with the book is that he tends to use code from the toolboxes, which can be inconvenient if you are student and only have the student version at home. Most of the time he builds the code from scratch but he uses toolbox code enough that it is annoying.

Practical and Readable

This book certainly is one of THE good books in Finance. I liked the way the author has provided the literature in Finance together with the math behind it. I have been reading other books on the same topic, most of which are crammed with equations without enough details and explanations. This book certainly attempts to fill that gap. (Ignore some of the typos though).

My request to the author...Please write another book, and this time, solely on mathematical Finance and please keep the same style (if not better) than you used in this book. The book (and the author) really helps to not only understand but also enjoy this field by reading books written in such styles.

A Classic

I own the first edition, which is half the size of this one. I enjoyed that book, but I had always hoped that it a provide a more in depth analysis. Well it appears my wishes have been answered. Paolo Brandimarte has expanded on his original outstanding work producing a rare book that can be used for self-study and which also provides practical exercises. It really is amazing how he has been able to touch on so many topics without sacrificing content in the process. The writing is lucid and the Matlab examples well-conceived. Anyone desiring to obtain a greater knowledge in the field of finance would be well-served in picking up this fine title. Of course, the book loses much of its impact if the reader does not have a copy of Matlab.
