About the Author
Niccolo Machiavelli was an Italian politician, diplomat, founding father of political science, and author of the preeminent political treatise, The Prince. Born in Florence, Italy, Machiavelli held many government posts over his lifetime and often took leading roles in important diplomatic missions. During his time visiting other countries and nation states, Machiavelli was exposed to the politics of figures like Ceasare Borgia and King Louis XII, experiences which would inform his writings on state-building and politics. Machiavelli s political career came to an abrupt end when the Medici overthrew Florence, and he was held as a prisoner under the new regime. Tortured for a short time, he was released without admitting to any crime or treason. At this point, Machiavelli retired and turned to intellectual and philosophical pursuits, producing his two major works, The Prince and Discourses on the First Ten Books of Titus Livy. He died in 1527 at the age of 58.

Great at any level of play

I played fro. Grade school until college. Took a 10 year break from it and came back to playing. It is a great book as a refresher and a great method for new students. I am now using it to teach my son and he's doing great. Get the one with the audio CD... it really helps to play along and hear an example. The CD does both for each line in the book. My son even. Moment ed on it with the CD.... loves it now....

About the Author
Clete A. Kushida, M.D., Ph.D. is a neurologist who is a professor in the department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Stanford University Medical Center, medical director of the Stanford Sleep Medicine Center, and director of the Stanford Center for Human Sleep Research. He is president of the World Sleep Federation, past president of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, and founding president of the California Sleep Society. He has conducted basic and clinical sleep research since 1977, has served as principal investigator for numerous federally and industry supported research studies, and has authored or edited over 150 publications, including six books.

Kiefer Lee is Senior Lecturer in Marketing, Sheffield Hallam University, prior to which he was Senior Lecturer in Marketing, University of Derby. Steve Carter is Professor of Marketing and Programme Group Manager, Full Time Computing and Masters programmes in The Derbyshire Business School,
University of Derby. Prior to this he was Head of the Division of Strategy and Marketing at The Derbyshire Business School, and was Project Director for the UN project, Centre and Network for Agricultural Marketing Training in Eastern and Southern Africa (1989-1995).

Full of major errors...

This was a required text for a class in my MBA program. It's very hard to take this book seriously when it is so full of egregious errors, both factual and typographical. Not to mention how outdated its examples of technology are. But the worst part is how the book is written like a long, tedious and overly verbose doctoral dissertation. It is without a doubt the worst textbook I've ever been required to purchase. The entire class is complaining about it. I wouldn't be surprised to find out it was written entirely by ghost writer who was paid by the word. All the helpful info in the this text could be thoroughly covered in a book 1/10th the size.

Just a few examples of the factual errors:
"Steve Jobs was once a star of the Microsoft phenomenon" (p. 262)
"Google ... has expanded its reach by taking over PayPal" (eBay has owned PayPal since 2002)
"Cigarette companies can advertise on TV in the U.S." (Um, not since 1971)
"American cars are not purchased in the U.K." (Hello? Ford Fiesta!)
It calls Twitter "tweeter" and gives the wrong web address
It mentions "Relative newcomers like Facebook"

Don't waste your students' time and money. It would be far better to require no text at all.

Decent Textbook in British English

Textbooks without vocabulary banks at the end of each chapter are not very useful when studying for exams! Also, the vocabulary terms are not highlighted or otherwise set apart in the chapters. Perhaps this is typical textbook format in the UK, but to Americans, it seems odd. So, I've had to adjust my entire strategy for retaining the information and reviewing before tests. Also, British spellings, idioms, word usages, and terms I am unfamiliar with demanded further research at times.

Ancient Greek literature, Athenian civic ideology, and modern classical scholarship have all worked together to reinforce the idea that there were three neatly defined status groups in classical Athens--citizens, slaves, and resident foreigners. But this book--the first comprehensive account of status in ancient democratic Athens--clearly lays out the evidence for a much broader and more complex spectrum of statuses, one that has important implications for understanding Greek social and cultural history. By revealing a social and legal reality otherwise masked by Athenian ideology, Deborah Kamen illuminates the complexity of Athenian social structure, uncovers tensions between democratic ideology and practice, and contributes to larger questions about the relationship between citizenship and democracy.

Each chapter is devoted to one of ten distinct status groups in classical Athens (451/0-323 BCE): chattel slaves, privileged chattel slaves, conditionally freed slaves, resident foreigners (metics), privileged metics, bastards, disenfranchised citizens, naturalized citizens, female citizens, and male citizens. Examining a wide range of literary, epigraphic, and legal evidence, as well as factors not generally considered together, such as property ownership, corporal inviolability, and religious rights, the book demonstrates the important legal and social distinctions that were drawn between various groups of individuals in Athens. At the same time, it reveals that the boundaries between these groups were less fixed and more permeable than Athenians themselves acknowledged. The book concludes by trying to explain why ancient Greek literature maintains the fiction of three status groups despite a far more complex reality.

Concise and nuanced introduction to the full spectrum of Athenian society

Hands down, the most concise, accessible, and nuanced introduction to the broad spectrum of Athenian society one could hope for. It summarizes the most important recent scholarship and is an indispensable gateway to further research on any specific group. I particularly appreciated the way that the author takes care to note ways in which even slaves and women could exercise agency despite the heavily prescribed nature of their lives. Little touches like that make this book not only a handy "just the facts, ma'am" reference, but a surprisingly humane and empathetic one as well. There are ten chapters, each about 10 pages long. The writing is clear and very accessible. This book, in parts or in its entirety, would be excellent to assign to students in a college class--as an introduction to different social groups, a jumping off point for independent research projects, or as a way to think about the range of statuses of different groups within American society. I can't recommend this book highly enough. It's truly an impressive accomplishment.

Pretty good, but a little superficial. It would be much better with another 150 pages or so. As it is, this is super useful for an undergrad. class, but a bit lacking for research purposes.
