La familia de León was one of the foundation stones on which Texas was built. Martín de León and his wife Patricia de la Garza left a comfortable life in Mexico for the hardships and uncertainties of the Texas frontier in 1801. Together, they established family ranches in South Texas and, in 1824, the town of Victoria and the de León colony on the Guadalupe River (along with Stephen F. Austin's colony, the only completely successful colonization effort in Texas). They and their descendents survived and prospered under four governments, as the society in which they lived evolved from autocratic to republican and the economy from which they drew their livelihood changed from one of mercantile control to one characterized by capitalistic investments.
Combining the storytelling flair of a novelist with a scholar's concern for the facts, Ana Carolina Castillo Crimm here recounts the history of three generations of the de León family. She follows Martín and Patricia from their beginnings in Mexico through the establishment of the family ranches in Texas and the founding of the de León colony and the town of Victoria. Then she details how, after Martín's death in 1834, Patricia and her children endured the Texas Revolution, exile in New Orleans and Mexico, expropriation of their lands, and, after returning to Texas, years of legal battles to regain their property. Representative of the experiences of many Tejanos whose stories have yet to be written, the history of the de León family is the story of the Tejano settlers of Texas.

Ana Carolina Castillo Crimm is a retired Professor of History from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas where she still lives with her husband.

A delicious read

Every now and then you luck into a beautifully produced book which changes your frame of reference. "De Leon" is as close to telling us about who we are and what made our nation as any I've read.
You don't have to be an historian or a scholar or someone with a particular interest in Mexican American history to realize that the De Leon story, in Crimm's telling, is as engaging, exciting, and moving as any part of our American story. "De Leon" offers an understanding not just of a piece of family history but of a whole landscape, storied but unfamiliar to many of us. Highly recommended!

Historical Family History...

Being related to the this Tejano family, I definitely had to purchase this book (twice now since I never had my original book returned). The only part of the book I take issue with is the one about how Agapito De Leon met his fate. Our oral family history accounts differently. My father was an author who self published a book by the name "Then The Gringos Came", but since his passing it is no longer available and in his book it shares a different account. As far back as I can remember (and that is, very long ago... ha), Agapito was murdered by the dastardly "rinche"... Mabry "Mustang" Gray when it didn't take much to become a Texas Ranger in those days. Those quickly deputized rangers worked for the robber barons who used them to kill and pillage innocent Tejanos using false pretenses. One famous Tejano real life folk hero was Gregorio Cortez. His story was made into a now famous historical musical ballad (Spanish:corrido) named "El Corrido de Gregorio Cortez". It was so ingrained in Tejano folklore that Professor Américo Paredes published a book named... "With His Pistol in His Hand": A Border Ballad and Its Hero (available through Amazon.com). It later became immortalized with a full length film featuring a young actor named James Edward Olmos. The name of this movie is "The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez". It is readily available as a DVD or VHS via Amazon.com but can also be viewed on the internet using youTube. Nonetheless, Ana Carolina Castillo Crimm does an excellent job of portraying the early Texas history empresarios in her book. In my humble opinion, it is very well written and the availability of "De Leon, a Tejano Family History" via Amazon.com is well worth the price. Buy it and enjoy the way Ms. Crimm writes the history of this very noble Texas family and the sad fate that awaited them and many other Tejano families at the hands of greedy opportunists.

This is a historical acumulation of Spanish heritage.

I had to have this book. I also have the "Empresario" as well. I know the family personally, and know they are good people. In fact, some are my cousins. It takes you back to the times of Texas before it was Texas. I love and admire the families' tenacity and understand the diversities they went through. I do believe that Don Martin De Leon was a diplomat and survived as a result of his religion and God-serving attributes. Thanks to the author, who spent 10 years of her life to write this book.
