Review
"In this simply written and heart-felt story, Taylor emerges as a sensitive, compassionate woman whose burdens have been far worse than those most of us will ever face. Through it all she loved all her children and recognized the many strange and unexpected gifts of disabled children. Taylor's balanced outlook is remarkable given her trials. And whether or not you share her brand of spirituality, her love of family and the way she constantly sought solutions to her huge problems is moving." -VIV Magazine"Occasionally, we have the rare privilege to have an intimate glimpse into the life of another and learn sublime truths through experiences we have no business knowing. The Fragile Face of God is such a rare glimpse. LeeAnn Taylor has captured the essence of what it means to be a human being in this engaging and heart-rending account. In the generosity of her story, LeeAnn shows that adversity can create the context for beauty, and that hardship can lead to profound realizations of the meaning of life." -Live on Purpose Radio"The Fragile Face of God is a page-turner, not only because of LeeAnn Taylor's incredible story of going through the deepest fires of refinement imaginable, but also because of her inspired gift of writing. You feel as if you, too, are on a journey of joy and sorrow that cannot help but raise your own spirit to new heights. Highly recommended if you are ready to peel back the veil to higher heavenly consciousness and earthly human compassion." -Michelle L. From the Author
Writing The Fragile Face of God has been the most gut-wrenching, turbulent, and monumental undertaking of my life. It has also been the most healing, revelatory, and soul-satisfying work I have yet done. Its conception began as an urgent inner need to provide an accounting of both the horrific, and the transcendent, aspects of my life raising three children with disabilities, and the subsequent change within myself - a daunting task. I had been trying for some time to make sense of the turmoil and pain and challenge I suffered while living twelve years as full-time caregiver for my five children, three of whom were born with Fragile X syndrome, a devastating genetic disorder causing significant intellectual impairment and the leading known cause of autism. But it was during the actual writing process of my book where I began to really unearth and deeply understand it all.My effort began with compiling more than seven-hundred pages of journal entries I had been chronicling for over twenty years. From there, I built a timeline, inserting information on what was happening during each step and how I felt about it. I then set out to create an exact unfolding of the really crucial pivot-points I experienced - the most highly compelling events in my life - and to bring them together into a whole-story-cohesion. What I found, to my surprise, was that all of my most vivid and poignant moments were dovetailed to other meaningful and life-changing events. It all came powerfully together as one piece to a lifetime puzzle - as if all those crucial pivot-points were merely awaiting my pen to break open their meaning and give it expression. I was finally able to give context to the inherent wonder of my journey as a mom and as a human being. The expansive process took a total of five years and was an epic event in itself. I have since experienced many more moments of wonder and realization as I've followed the path of this story and its effect on those who have read it. It's been an eye-opening and life-changing endeavor - to delve into the deepest and darkest corners of my life and retrieve what can transform and uplift. That is the most fulfilling of all endeavors - to bring out of the darkness something of the light. My hope, now, is that they who read my story may find light in every corner of their own journeys.
From the Back Cover
I suddenly found myself in the midst of a bright and gentle light. I soon realized I was outside my body in a place of profound calm. About one foot away and facing me I beheld a young woman. The last time I had seen her she was pale and sick and bald. It was Carol, my mother. I was in her heavenly presence . . . and she had a message for me.

Read it in one day and cannot stop thinking about it
By Bonnie Korman
Powerful story, and very moving, maybe because I related so much to it. Right from the first page, where she says that people are always telling her she is an amazing mom - but she knows that she is no hero. We parents of children with special needs are always hearing how "amazing" we are. I think it's a way of indirectly saying "better you than me."
The author starts out by describing her childhood, in which she watched her beloved mother suffer from cancer. Losing her mother at a young age set in motion a series of challenges she faced involving her immaturity and inexperience. And then she married and had children.
This is a brutal, honest portrayal of the chaos and daily heartache a mom suffers while raising several children with Fragile X syndrome - the most common, inherited cause of autism, as of today. At least one out of every ten people with autism has Fragile X. LeeAnn had a 50/50 chance of passing the Fragile X gene on to each of her children, and three out of her five received it.
Part of what made this story so relatable was the frequent journal entries she included in the story. The author and I are about the same age. While I was in college, finding my first job, and still really growing up, she was already married and raising a family with many special needs. With the date of each journal entry, I'd think back to my own life at that time, and how very different it was from Leeann's life.
There are many shocking moments throughout this book. Truth is more compelling than fiction, when the story is well constructed like this and follows a clear path. I'm having a hard time commenting on this without including "spoilers," so I'll just say that if you've ever felt like God left you behind and forgot about you, and and you are alone in the world with unbearable demands put on you, you should read LeeAnn's story.

A New Definition of Hero
By Becki Hawkins
As a parent of healthy children we've all had days of being bone weary with feeding, bathing, laundry, protecting, colds, childhood diseases like chickenpox, measles, and minor accidents. But what if you had more than one child with Fragile X!!
This author shares with us reality of day to day life, the level of fatigue many of us might not survive, her frankness of, at times, just surviving.
And then ....
Yes, in my eyes, she is a hero.

Poignant and Powerful
By Amazon Customer
Having lost my mother to the same ravaging illness and in the same untimely way, I connected with LeeAnn's story immediately. The tender way she describes their relationship is heartbreaking in its clarity because it is from the deepest resources of her memory. The author was only eight years old when first hit with such an intimate tragedy.
Survive she does and you smile as she comes into her vibrant own, growing up and having the world as her stage and the bright spark of a life full of dreams within her grasp but... then the marriage and the children, five in total, three with Fragile X Syndrome. Jaede, was the first born of two girls without FXS and one of two angel bookends, a buffering maybe to what was coming next. (A genetic learning disability, FXS affects males far more severely than it does females because of a faulty gene on the X chromosome that makes the protein necessary for brain development. Since boys have a single X chromosome, they are far worse off than girls who have it.)
LeeAnn's next children, two boys, Quinn and Shale, were born with full blown FXS. Some of the most harrowing accounts of the ravaging of this affliction and of parents so in over their heads on what they'd been thrust into I doubt could be read anywhere else. Like any good mom, everything LeeAnn had hoped, dreamed and wanted for herself took a back seat to making sure she and her children survived, not only the day but the next minute and hour.
The Fragile Face of God is a whirl-wind read, a testament to the belief that God doesn't ever give any one more hardship than they can handle. For when they are at the brink, Heaven is at the ready.
