About the Author
Paul Merton made his stand-up debut at London’s Comedy Store in 1982. In 1985 he joined the Comedy Store Players, an improvised comedy group which led, in 1988, to him appearing on Whose Line is it Anyway? for the first few series. He has appeared on Have I Got News For You and Radio 4’s Just a Minute. Other TV highlights include his eponymous surreal sketch series from 1991-3; interviewing Spike Milligan in what was to be his last major television appearance as host of Room 101; and making several programs about early cinema, including The Birth Of Hollywood.

Despite knowing a lot of these stories from various interviews on YouTube, reading them as written by the man himself adds a whole new dimension.

Paul Merton has long been one of my top 5 favourite comedians (the others are Eric Morcambe, Dudley Moore, Kenneth Williams and Ian Hislop)
I first saw him in Whose Line is it Anyway and from that point I looked out all I could find of his work. When Kenneth Williams so sadly died I thought it was a bit of serendipity that Paul Merton took over in Just A Minute - I think Kenneth would have loved it. Thank goodness for the Internet which gives me my fixes of Have I Got News For You & Room 101 etc, as, sadly, little of his work is shown here in NZ. There are things I've read about but not been able to get my hands on yet - I live in hope and keep looking!
I enjoyed this book so much and only the fact that I had to go to work stopped me reading it in one sitting. The content was funny and honest as the first reviewer has said. I also found it touching without being overly sentimental (loved the bit about the shreds of paper turning into white butterflies). It was easy to read - the one or two little grammar glitches, (eg 'discrete' used instead of 'discreet') which usually annoy the hell out of me, didn't bother me at all because they were just that - tiny glitches in the middle of fluent, well-structured writing, through which Mr. Merton's wit and humour shone, without being over-done or exaggerated. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about this marvellous comedian - he reveals enough to make you feel satisfied but not so much that you feel that too much has been shared. I'm now going to get hold of his other books. Thanks, Mr. Merton, you've brightened up my life many many times!
