About the Author
Ricky Greenwald, PsyD, is the founder and director of the Trauma Institute & Child Trauma Institute, affiliate professor at SUNY University at Buffalo School of Social Work, and was previously on faculty at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. Dr. Greenwald is the author of numerous professional articles as well as several books. His trauma training methods have been widely emulated internationally, and his work has been translated into over a dozen languages. Dr. Greenwald has received awards for both his research and his service, and is a fellow of the American Psychological Association.

User-friendly trauma treatment

Dr. Greenwald's latest book is the one that clinicians serious about helping their clients overcome trauma must have. Most importantly -- it is written in a straightforward manner that is useful "right out of the box". I have found learning his phase model for trauma treatment and clearly outlined strategies to be a trans formative element in my current success in my practice with children and adults. Progressive Counting givies clients the chance to work through the upsetting elements of theri traumaitc experiences in a manageable way that really gets results.

Simply outstanding - a major contribution, and surely where trauma therapy is headed

I'll post a more detailed review later, but for now I offer this:
Dr. Greenwald is a thoughtful, serious, committed trauma therapist, highly esteemed in the world of EMDR therapists (to which I also belong). His publications are major contributions to the field.
"Progressive counting" (PC) describes an evolutionary progression beyond at least two other previously documented trauma treatment models, one of which is EMDR. PC is far leaner, easier to learn, quicker to teach. Early research on it clearly indicates that it is at least as efficient (fast) and effective as EMDR, which has had a slight edge over Foa's Prolonged Exposure (PE) model. Together, EMDR and PE are by far the best validated, most reliable and successful trauma treatment procedures we have. With additional research, it appears that PC will rise to the top of this list.
Training costs and learning times inhibit the development of a sufficient number of trauma therapists to meet the need. This has been a very significant problem in the US Veteran's Administration, for example, but it is a problem in all other sectors of society as well. Greenwald's PC model is clearly the solution.
Trauma psychotherapy is not simple, by nature, because psychological trauma is not simple. But the PC model reduces it to its essential elements better than anything else I've ever seen. This is exciting, and gives me hope that we can pick up speed in our efforts to increase treatment access for those in need.
I recommend this book without reservation. It is a teaching manual above all else, and straightforward and helpful - and is well written as well. A superb contribution to our field!

The "Progress" in the title "Progressive Counting" truely depicts my experience of this therapy and its role in the future of trauma treatment. This book is full of research-suported user-friendly interventions for every step in treatment. The scripted material provided in this book allows the therapist to worry less about procedure and focus more on their clients. As humans, We are wired for stories and Dr. Greenwald's use of a "fairytale" as a metaphore for the treatment process is insightful, creative, and speaks to all of us as we live our life's story. I am a long time EMDR clinician and find Progressive Counting to be equally as effective and efficient as EMDR and well tolerated by clients. I appreciate that PC is inexpensive and easy for clinicians to learn. If you are looking for current and valuable information on trauma/loss, refreshing and practical interventions to use with clients of all ages and challenges, a clear research-supported "phase model" of treatment for your clients, and an effective "sward" to help your clients work through their trauma/loss experiences then, this book is for you!
