In this reboot of a '90s series, supernatural investigators and reality television stars Vaughn and Tommy go to a cemetery one night to summon up an alluring woman in a cryptic white outfit, whom they believe is a legendary ghost. The woman—codenamed Ghost—actually an amnesiac who needs help finding out how she ended up in her current predicament. As luck would have it, the secret of her past coincides with that of Vaughn, and the investigation brings the two on a collision course with supernatural secrets sewn into the tapestry of Chicago history. Everything comes together in a competent, professional manner, but excitement is lacking. As a central character, Ghost is aptly named, because she's completely lifeless, and once her secret is revealed, it's so limiting that she actually ends up being less interesting than before. Vaughn, a washed-up, divorced, alcoholic ex-journalist trying to get his life together, owns half the story, but it doesn't add much. Artist Noto draws with a lovely art deco–inspired look, but the pseudo-realistic style doesn't enliven the proceedings much. (Aug.)

Promising beginning

In the 90s "Ghost" was a Dark Horse feature for some time. It has been recently revived by the very same company in 3 issues of Dark Horse Presents (#13-15) and a limited series. This trade reprints issues 0 to 4 of this series (#0 reprinting the 3 story parts from DHP). Only weeks ago Kelly Su DeConnick confirmed that she would be writing at least the first arc of an upcoming ongoing.
The story: Two losers in the occult business have purchased an object of unknown function. Somehow they manage to bring on the ghost of an unknown lady with unexpected abilities. It turns out that this lady has a story and a lot of less well meaning people are after this mysterious object. The ex of one of the losers, investigative journalist, is the lover of the mayor who has an important role in all of this.
The story is well written, the art of Phil Noto is not lacking either. You get some origin story of the "ghost", you learn to know the two male protagonists and you get a story of something going on worldwide that might not be best for human welfare. There is mystery, there are shocking scenes, and there is humor too. If you like that sort of story you might try this out.

Continuity problem

There is a continuity problem as of chapter 4, page 10 when the story makes a big unexplained jump.In the upper rght square it says "I hid it on the gift table like you said, and it's gone" with no lead-in anywhere else in the story to explain what he is talking about. It looks like two to four pages are missing

Kelly Sue DeConnick weaves a great story of supernatural heroism with a soul.

This collected set of stories does a brilliant job of reviving an old character in a way that doesn't require any previous knowledge or reading to enjoy it. While other reviews have focused on the synopsis of the story; I want focus on the quality of the overall reading experience.
Kelly Sue DeConnick has a fabulous way of inventing an engaging story line and then giving it the small, thoughtful touches that make it mentally and emotionally accessible. The plot offers a good blend of mystery and action; while the dialogue helps create a delightful cast of very human characters caught in the middle of inhuman circumstances. Phil Noto's artwork rounds out the book with enjoyable clarity; giving us the facial expressions and body language that add even more life to the characters.
On a final note: normally I'm not comfortable telling people where to drop more of their dollars; but if you enjoy this volume, you owe it to yourself to pick up the soon-to-be-released "Ghost Volume 2: The White City Butcher." Binding together the first 4 issues of the ongoing Ghost comics series, this new volume picks up where the first one left off. Once again Kelly Sue does thrilling work and the artwork compliments her efforts perfectly. Together, the stories in these two volumes will offer a marvelous stand-alone reading experience with an emotionally charged ending. So even if you don't want the follow the monthly series, this alone will be a set that you will probably want to read more than once.
