This book is a thorough study of all known guerrilla operations in Civil War Missouri during 1863, the middle year of the war. This work explores the tactics with which each side attempted to gain advantage, with regional differences as influenced by the personalities of local commanders.
An enormous variety of sources--military and government records, private accounts, county and other local histories, period and later newspapers, and secondary sources published after the war--are used to identify which Southern partisan leaders and groups operated in which areas of Missouri, and to describe how they operated and how their kinds of warfare evolved.
The actions of Southern guerrilla forces and Confederate behind-enemy-lines recruiters are presented chronologically by region so that readers may see the relationship of seemingly isolated events to other events over a period of time in a given area. The counter-actions of an array of different types of Union troops are also covered to show how differences in training, leadership, and experiences affected behaviors and actions in the field.

Fantastic Missouri Civil War Reference

Love this book. Using it for research for a novel that's in the works. Exactly the kind of info I needed about the various actions going on at different times in different parts of the state during 1863.

Seems complete, but disappointing

The writer went to great pains to include every instance of guerrilla activity in Missouri that he could find. He includes details of who did what, where, and has end-notes for references, so that readers can fact check, or find additional details. The influence of the Kansas Jayhawkers (who often invaded Missouri and killed people, and stole or damaged property) is well described. Also included is a good description of the actions and reactions of other military groups, such as the Missouri State Militia Cavalry, various other Union Regiments, the Enrolled Missouri Militia, and the Provisional Enrolled Missouri Militia.
The author (Bruce Nichols) also explains certain strategies of the guerrillas, and of the Union, especially the Missouri State Militia. Concepts of the use of 'hunting parties' (my words) towards the end of 1863, or of lying in wait for guerrilla bands to pass by, which were actually used by guerrillas earlier in the war. I had never seen these concepts given with a date of inception, so it allowed me to understand how the counter-warfare evolved.
The author goes through the history of guerrilla warfare season by season, and region by region. This makes it a little more understandable of what was happening in each region, throughout the year. Because there was so much guerrilla activity, this was an approach that helped me understand what was going on.
However, there are at least two cases where the side comments are disappointing, and one of these is a running theme through the book. The author seem to justify the guerrilla conduct as simply being reactions to atrocities committed by the Jayhawkers, or Union elements. In other words, the guerrillas may have killed innocent civilians, but so did the Jayhawkers. The guerrillas may have scalped the dead, but the Union started it. The author a few times stated that the death of a guerrilla who had killed others was 'sad'.
This viewpoint has been seen in some other books about guerrilla warfare in Missouri, perhaps because a lot of guerrillas seemed to write books after the war. It's one of the rare cases where the winners didn't write the history.
The second area that I had problems with was the concept that guerrilla warfare was done primarily to achieve rational goals, which were set out in the book. While there may have been leaders who had goals for guerrilla warfare, the average guerrilla wasn't probably aware of, or motivated by these goals. They weren't trying to keep large numbers of Union forces occupied in Missouri so they wouldn't go elsewhere, they were trying to exact revenge for an injustice, or they were trying to get food and property for themselves, or they were simply angry. Or they had other motives. But there were no quotes of the guerrillas saying, 'we're just trying to keep the Union soldiers here.'
I would want to read a book like this for the facts, but am disappointed in the conclusions and viewpoint. This is a book to be checked out at a library, but not to be bought for your own. And I like to buy Civil War books.
