This book covers Joan Newton Cuneo's life and her role (from 1905 to 1915) as the premier female racer in the United States and spokeswoman for women drivers and good roads. Beginning with her family history and marriage to Andrew Cuneo, it traces her life in New York society, the birth of her children, and Joan's growing interest in automobile touring and racing and partnership with Louis Disbrow, her racing mechanic.
The book covers Joan's experiences in three Glidden Tours, including her notes on the 1907 tour, her first races, and her rivals. It also looks at the growth and change of automobile culture and the battles for control of racing among the American Automobile Association, the Automobile Club of America, and the American Automobile Manufacturers Association--which ended in banishing women racers shortly after Joan's greatest racing victories at New Orleans (in 1909). The book then follows Joan's attempts to continue racing, the end of her marriage, her move to the Upper Peninsula, and her remarriage and death. The book also includes a chapter on her female rivals in racing and touring.

Great information
By Olivia LDP
Women will gain a good impression of life during the era and an admiration for the women who chose to ignore the restraints. It is also an intriguing insight into the early automotive industry - honestly, if people were regularly getting pitched out of their cars back then, how is it the industry didn't think of seat belts until the 70's??? And the ROADS!!! Ugh!!! It laid out an interesting picture of America at the time. I ding a star not for the content or writing but for print flaws that didn't get caught - tsk, tsk. If you are a history buff of women and/or cars and/or the era itself, you will learn quite a bit. Joan was my kind of activist - a doer!

Must Read
By Dr. Howard Shealy
As a historian who has always loved automobiles and racing, I absolutely loved Professor Elsa Nystrom's life of Joan Newton Cuneo. If you have any interest in the earliest years of automobile racing (the "brass age") or in the role of women in American society at the beginning of the 20th century, Mad For Speed is a MUST READ! Professor Nystrom's research is meticulous and she tells a fascinating story very well indeed.

For car girls and car guys
By Quill
This is an excellent book about a little known auto racer in the early 1900's. The writer is a university professor of history and knows how to research in spite of obstacles and write about this subject. Great pictures also.
