The Baby Chase: How Surrogacy Is Transforming the American Family, by Leslie Morgan Steiner

From the New York Times bestselling author of Crazy Love comes a riveting new narrative about surrogate pregnancy from both sides of the equation—the parents and the gestational carrier.

Once considered a desperate, even morally suspect option, surrogacy is now sweeping headlines, transforming the lives of celebrity mothers and fathers like Sarah Jessica Parker, Nicole Kidman and Elton John, and changing the face of motherhood and the American family. But how much do we really know about it? And is it really as easy and accessible – emotionally, financially, legally and physically – as magazines make it out to be? We often hear about successful outcomes, but little about the journey – about the precious hope that starts it all, the ups and downs of finding a surrogate, the heartache and obstacles, the risks and expenses at every step, or the unbelievable joy when years of determination pay off. In The Baby Chase, acclaimed writer Leslie Morgan Steiner weaves three stories together — of a nurse, a firefighter, and the Indian gestational carriers and doctors who helped them — to provide one intensely personal look at what makes surrogacy so controversial, fascinating, and in some cases, the only ray of hope for today's infertile parents-to-be.

Rhonda Wile and her husband Gerry struggled for years with infertility. With perseverance that shocked everyone around them, they tried every procedure and option available – unsuccessfully – until they finally decided to hire a surrogate. While surrogacy was being touted as a miracle for hopeful parents, for Rhonda and Gerry, it seemed an impossible and unaffordable dream. Until they came across the beaming smile of a beautiful Indian woman on the internet… and, within a few short months, embarked on a journey that would take them deep into the emerging world of Indian carriers, international medical tourism, and the global surrogacy community.

Moving, page-turning, and meticulously researched, this complex human story is paired with an examination of the issues—religious, legal, medical and emotional—that shapes surrogacy as a solution both imperfect and life-changing.

From Booklist
Even though Steiner (Crazy Love, 2009) notes that babies conceived through assisted reproductive technologies represent only an estimated one percent of all U.S. births, it is still important for the public to understand the processes. A “traditional surrogate” uses her own egg to conceive and carry a baby she won’t raise, whereas a “gestational surrogate” is not biologically related to the fetus inside of her. In India, home of the traditional surrogates who bear the children of the couple Steiner features, gestational surrogacy has been legal since 2002. It’s easy to root for Rhonda Wile (a nurse who blogged about her infertility journey) and her husband, Gerry (a rugged firefighter), who can’t afford an American surrogate. The prices can go as high as $100,000, and most are 28-year-olds who are Christian, married moms with kids of their own, women “who shop at Walmart and Costco, not Whole Foods and Neiman-Marcus.” Steiner covers all the psychological and medical complications and changing attitudes pertaining to surrogacy and shares her “belief that everyone who wants a baby deserves a baby.” --Karen Springen

Review

“Steiner overlays the story of Rhonda and Gerry Wile―an Arizona nurse and firefighter whose search for children led them to surrogate pregnancy―on an emotionally heightened, journalistic overview of infertility and the options available to prospective parents… Noting barren women of the Bible as examples, as well as celebrities who have used IVF and surrogacy, Steiner appeals to a popular demographic to craft a personable account of the hope surrogacy can offer… [Steiner] effectively touches on the complications of surrogacy―including its economic, legal, ethical, psychological, and societal ramifications―in clear, informative ways. She also offers insights on some of the controversies, from religious perspectives to the lack of coverage for surrogacy by many insurance companies.” ―Kirkus Reviews

“Compulsively readable.” ―People on Crazy Love

“In steady, intimate prose punctuated by surprising, refreshing streaks of humor… this courageous, empowering survival story brings the phrase ‘battered woman' into terrifying focus.” ―Kirkus Reviews on Crazy Love

“[Readers will] cheer as Steiner… slowly regains her sense of self and escapes this crazy love.” ―The Washington Post on Crazy Love

“Harrowing.” ―TheDailyBeast.com on Crazy Love

Mix of info on infertility info & Truth of ABORTION of FEMALES in INDIA
By Kylee
I enjoyed the book for the most part. I like the analogy of describing the unfairness of infertility and having to self pay for these costs (although I object to the plea to cover the reversal of vasectomy). You really get a sense of how out of reach solutions are for ordinary people. And the misconceptions on 'oh just adopt'. I did feel slightly that while we don't know the full story, in this case the husband had 'two' daughters and the agony they describe him feeling makes me feel deep sorrow for their feelings.... But his new wife and his love for her I get so I can overlook this but I just felt a paragraph was worth being present to respect the girls. I also loved the respect for the country they were using, I also love that they are shining a light on the truth that all the pro life tech managers, congress members approving H1B Visas, are overlooking... The book gives detailed facts on the oppression of women and the genocide of female fetuses and female newborns. A huge secret that the media does little reporting on, that Congress pro-life Republicans ignore as they continue approving more and more H1b visas and more and more business is done with India, more and more American jobs are lost and more and more India families come to America and amazingly give birth to only boys and no one says a word.... I'm glad this book includes this truth.

Title fooled me, but great book!
By Chrissy
Totally my fault for not reading the excerpt on the inside cover before purchasing. Just going by the title alone I assumed I would learn the ins and outs of surrogacy WITHIN the US....but nope! lol While India is a great option for some pursuing surrogacy, it's just not for me and my Husband. And this book set that even more for us. The Wile's had an amazing journey and I loved following along. If you’re at all interested in Surrogacy in India, then this is a great book for you. Or if you just want to read an uplifting story about overcoming infertility then this is the book for you. If you want to learn about surrogacy within the US…then this is NOT the book for you. It does mention a few things about US surrogacy, including RESOLVE, and my own clinic Shady Grove Fertility, but otherwise no real US info.

Chasing Nonfiction Excellence
By Eugene Monroe Legg
CRAZY LOVE is not only my favorite work of nonfiction, it is THE most popular book in my high school English classroom, where kids hurl themselves toward well-written accounts of hardships equivalent to those they may well be undergoing themselves. They will now love THE BABY CHASE (as I do) because they trust Leslie as a writer and as an authority on any subject matter she has either experienced or studied with the passion she invests in every facet of her life. And they will learn about a whole new realm of determination and commitment they may never have even heard of before. And guess what? Gerry and Rhonda are now MY "friends," thanks to the depth and rigorous honesty with which Leslie explores and reveals so many levels of their lives.
