Reporter Mark Manning searches for a killer and stumbles upon a stunning conspiracy
Chicago Journal reporter Mark Manning has been called in to replace a colleague on a big story. Famed Swiss astrophysicist Pavo Zarnik has just stunned the science world with his announcement that he’s discovered a tenth planet in our solar system. Manning is skeptical of Zarnik’s claims and believes he’s a fraud. His suspicions grow when his fellow reporter—award-winning journalist Clifford Nolan—turns up dead, his laptop missing. Now, Manning is covering two breaking stories and coping with the not-entirely-unwanted advances of twenty-something reporter David Bosch. In a committed relationship with architect Neil Waite, Manning is determined to resist temptation. But he soon has bigger things to worry about. On the edge of a far-reaching political conspiracy, Manning matches wits with a killer whose agenda is about to become chillingly clear. Eye Contact is the second book in Michael Craft’s Mark Manning series, which also includes Flight Dreams and Body Language.

From Publishers Weekly
Obvious and unconvincing, the latest appearance of Chicago journalist Mark Manning (introduced in Flight Dreams, 1997) is less a mystery than a platform for exploring gay sexuality. Manning is skeptical of astrophysicist Pavo Zarnik's announcement of the discovery of a new planet. He also doubts the authenticity of Zarnik's claims to be a renowned Eastern European scientist. The fatal shooting of a fellow reporter, also investigating Zarnik, ups the ante. Personal complications ensue when Manning is assigned a bodacious and flirty young assistant whose charms prove a potent distraction from the reporter's relationship with his loftmate, Neil, an architect who's redesigned their plush condo. All this happens on the eve of a gay-rights festival that is agitating the local Christian fundamentalists. Craft makes the identity of the limping killer obvious, gives his characters wooden, expository dialogue and grounds Manning's investigation in flimsy evidence (e.g., Manning suspects Zarnik isn't really from Eastern Europe because his personal hygiene is impeccable and he eats peanut butter). Manning's moral quandaries are generally convincing, but overall there is more gay sex?some real, some imagined, most graphically depicted?on these pages than mystery. Readers seeking narrative satisfactions will likely be disappointed.

In Flight Dreams (LJ 6/1/97) up-and-coming Chicago journalist Mark Manning solved a mystery, came out, became wealthy, and met the man of his dreams. Now, two years later, he and hunky cub reporter David (a potential temptation) investigate the new head of the Civic Planetarium, who claims discovery of a tenth planet but has no concrete proof. Mark suspects fraud and connects the man to the murder of another colleague, the newspaper's science reporter. Good plotting, with witty conversations, erotic dreams, and a philosophical moment or two; recommended for most collections.

From Kirkus Reviews
Since Chicago Journal science editor Cliff Nolan never filed his story on Dr. Pavo Zarnik's claim to have discovered a tenth planet out beyond Pluto, investigative reporter Mark Manning is ordered to cobble together an article. Quite a story, if true--only Mark, fresh from his discovery of Cliff's dead body, is convinced the story's bogus and Zarnik's an impostor. (The clues that give Zarnik away, in fact, occasion the cleverest bit of detection here.) Weighted down by the assistant he's been assigned, adoring cub reporter David Bosch--who knows that Mark is gay and indicates that he'd come out of the closet to spend the night with him--Mark, determined to be faithful to his loftmate, architect Neil Waite, goes in search of the story, and promptly runs into a gigantic conspiracy that links Chicago's impending millennial blowout, Celebration 2000, to the gay-baiting Christian Family Crusade, the Pentagon, and somebody with very deep pockets indeed. En route to the movielike final conflagration, which reduces the lead villain to ``hissing meat,'' Mark will have time for an elaborate party--evidently a trademark of this series (Flight Dreams, 1997)and some torrid coupling, in his dreams and out. The conspiracy is the stuff of standard paranoia, and Mr. Hissing Meat's identity pretty obvious. But the scenes of gay domestic life, which show a welcome sensitivity, could go far toward helping this gay mystery enlarge, or even escape, its niche. -- Copyright ©1998, Kirkus Associates, LP. Focus on Character
By A Customer
I like this series more with each book. Journalist Mark Manning is a likable, thinking man's hero, and his lover, young architect Neil Waite makes an appealing foil. The more Michael Craft developes these characters and their relationship, the more I like his mysteries--although, I gotta say, the religious fanatic thing is getting real old (there ARE other motivations for evil). Mark and Neil talk more than most gay protagonists, and about an interesting variety of topics. Craft has toned down the artificiality which affected characters and dialouge in FLIGHT DREAMS, first book of the series. Craft has plotted a solid mystery this time with plenty of action, and I particularly liked the way he handled the threat which developed in Mark and Neil's relationship (although it was far too easily and unrealistically resolved). I look forward to the next installment.

Aspecial work, erotic in its' mystery

It has been two years since Chicago Tribune reporter Mark Manning came out of the closet to admit in print that he is gay and living with his lover, architect Neil Waite. The pair is committed to each other and their careers. Mark is working with David Bach, a cub reporter, on a potentially prize winning story. However, David hero worships wants Mark and wants him as his lover. This situation places Mark's personal relationship with Neil at risk.
Although their relationship becomes strained and severely tested, Mark expects his lover to understand that he is not perfect. Meanwhile, the story that Mark and David are covering centered on a conspiracy involving the Millennium 2000 celebration turns deadly. In some manner, a phony astrophysicist, a dead reporter, and a Christian fundamentalist are tied together. It is up to Mark to learn what binds these people together before the country is dramatically changed.
EYE CONTACT picks up where FLIGHT DREAMS left off by focusing on the mystery and the growth of the man coming to terms with his sexual preference. The who-done-it is well plotted and interesting, but the beauty of this novel lies in Mark's struggles to understand what makes a relationship work. Michael Craft demonstrates he is an artist as he crafts a beautiful relationship drama that is superior to most on the market today. Harriet Klausner

Flawed but entertaining

This is really the perfect set-up for an gay amateur sleuth series. Mark Manning is a prize-winning journalist who has recently come to terms with his sexuality (right before his mid-life crisis). Book two is a stronger novel in many ways from the first book of the series. It's less arty-farty and more focused on the mystery. All to the good. I'm getting tired of the perennial Roxanne (in real life this woman would be a pest), and I would like to see her the victim in the next novel (no such luck). I thought the final wrap up was a little too fast and too sketchy: and-we-all-lived-happily-ever-after was the feeling I got. I expected some explantion, some fallout for Manning's behavior. It would have provided depth to what feels like a symbolic relationship (instead of a real one). Not bad though--and with a little editorial direction, this could be a great series.
