About the Author

BRIAN M. TISSUE, PhD, is Associate Professor of Chemistry at Virginia Tech, where he teaches analytical chemistry at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. In addition to curriculum development, Dr. Tissue oversees a research program in nanomaterials and analytical spectroscopy, preparing and testing nanocomposites for catalytic activity. Among his honors, Dr. Tissue has received an NSF Career Award and a Cottrell Scholar Award from the Research Corporation for Science Advancement.

Comprehensive but not the most clear/concise

A lot of information but not the most clear. Being a college professor and writer, I often have need for information in other related fields so like to have basic's covered. This book is comprehensive but honestly, I would hate to face this thing if I were a student! The old quote by Allan Bromley comes to mind... If you can't explain what you're doing and why you're doing it to any intelligent layman, that really means that you don't understand it yourself.

While I have no doubt the authors clearly understand the topic, communication is probably not as clear nor concise as it could be. In short, a comprehensive book but not the most clear/concise.

Excellent chemistry text that uses the Gold Book terminology ...

The Basics of Analytical Chemistry and Chemical Equilibria "emphasizes the fundamental chemical and physical concepts that underlie the analytical methods." As in many books, including books for Dummies, there are certain assumptions made involving the readership. In this book the assumption is that you have a basic knowledge of mathematics, chemistry, and reaction types.

Each chapter is prefaced by several "Learning Outcomes" the reader should accomplish with the materials presented. At the end, there are practice exercises, occasionally including calculational to work through. Interspersed throughout the text are tables, figures, and small sidebars that include examples to work through (You-Try-It).

One useful, recommended accompanying text would be theIUPAC Compendium of Chemical Terminology - the Gold Book. This book is well-written and what I especially like is the explanations of terminology within sentences. They are not weighty, but rather will prompt the student to recall previously learned materials. Links to additional resources are added for reference.

Comfortably Enjoyable Approach to Chemical Analysis

I love the approach taken with “Basics of Analytical Chemistry and Chemical Equilibria.” This is a black and white text; however, the procedures presented are in such a clearly-written, no nonsense manner that confidently guides the reader to a complete understanding of the steps involved in a wide variety of analytical methods. This exceptional chemistry text opens with concise explanations, along with plenty of applicable practice exercises, for taking quantitative measurements to produce reliable results. Throughout the various chapters, all relevant equipment is introduced with definitive illustrations that offer the benefit of a visual aid to assist in identifying components.

This book offers a decent variety of analytical chemistry coverage, enough to teach the underlying principles of analysis without being cumbersome. The only thing missing is a gratuitous periodic table of elements. This is an awesome chemistry book, both as a refresher and for students new in their study of chemistry. I find the writing to be enjoyably comprehensive, and I consider the layout quite superb.
