It is only missing the Black Coast, a Pirate Queen, and Conan...
By Epaka
I've never read any other Brian Wood, but based on this series he is a decent comic book writer - at best. I have, however, read and collected every single english-language Conan comic in existence. Of course, I've also read all of REH's original Conan stories (but I have skipped the pastiche novels). So, suffice it to say, I know Conan. Much like people's misconceptions about Tarzan, the general public has a limited and distorted idea of the character of Conan. He is NOT simply a 'roided out, grunting barbarian who slices his way through all of his problems while bedding a lass or two. He is not the rather simple character we see in the Schwarzenegger film, and many of the lesser comics that have come out since Conan first hit the comics scene in the 1970's. To learn what a dynamic, intelligent, and interesting character Conan is, just read the original REH or pick up one of Dark Horse's reprints of early classic Marvel Conan comics.
For all of that, I am not a Conan purist who is unable to accept portrayals of him that are less than accurate. Nor do I insist that writers and artists who adapt the original stories stick 100% to the original dialog or text. I actually like to see many different creative talents working out their own vision of the character. So, when slumping sales drove DH to shake up their Conan series by hiring Brian Wood and Becky Cloonan to adapt what is arguably the most beloved REH Conan tale, 'Queen of the Black Coast', and gave them orders to make Conan 'more human', I was willing to wait and see what they came up with. I am not happy with the results.
Ignoring the fact that Conan and Belit's tale belongs on the high seas, Wood has myopically focused his story on developing the romantic connection between our protagonists on dry land, and in head-scratching ways. These are two tough as nails warriors who's connection in the original is beyond average human passion, born of a shared love of battle, blood, sex, and seizing life by the throat. But Mr. Wood insists on injecting his very modern, weepy, teen-flavored, post-renaissance notions of romantic love into a story (and characters) where it simply doesn't belong. I can forgive Wood's weird anachronisms, although they practically rip one out of the time and place of the story, I can forgive him his lack of knowledge on the Hyborian world, and I can forgive Cloonen's weak and simple art, but I can't forgive how badly this adaption mangles everything about one of my favorite literary characters. It almost makes me want to grab some of my old 90's era Conan comics off the shelf for another read. You know, back when second rate writers were simply sticking Conan into random, poorly written Dungeons & Dragons style silliness. Yeah, this is such crap that I actually miss Wraal, the Devouerer of Souls and his bag of magic Gummy Worms.
It's a Conan title, so 3 stars for that, but it is completely sucking as a Conan title, so it should be 1 star... In the end I give it 2 stars because it is only a comic book, and if 1 star means 'I Hate It', well, I can't really muster hate for a comic book.

Absolute garbage
By Federico Jose Morales
This review is for volumes 13, 14, and 15... Although I've only read half of 14 before I had to stop and haven't read 15 at all... Nor do I intend to.

The original Howard story is one of my favorite Conan story arcs. The adventure, Conan's confusion with civilization, his passionate partnership with Belit, Conan's discussions of the cult of his people. Love it. I've read all the Conan original Howard stories a dozen times and I think Dark Horse has done an amazing job with the adaptations up til now. I tried to read this story arc rewritten by Brian Wood, but I just had to stop because it was too mind blowingly stupid. I doubt that Brian Wood ever even read the original Conan stories.

This is the only story I have ever read where the women are not beautiful and Conan is a coward, a weakling, and a sap. There is no adventure in this story arc so far. Only a moody and effeminate boy pining for a girl and feeling sorry for himself. There is no Conan.

There is FAR too much over voice narration in here, as Wood makes a sad attempt to insert himself into the story line. If there was going to be so much narration, Wood should have quoted directly from Howard rather than make up garbage.

Crucial and highly visual elements of the original story original line are shunted aside and treated with just a few lines of explanations from the main character rather than drawn out. For example, the beginning of the Howard story tells of Conan's refusal to betray his young officer friend, his confusion at a "civilized" court proceeding, and his daring escape from captivity all before even starting the real story line on the Argus. This is a huge opportunity missed. I'm confident that Kurt Busiek would have made this as awesome as he and his team did with the earlier dark horse coverage of Conan stories. Brian Wood reduces this awesome introduction into two pages of Conan standing and talking to some guy.

The artwork is HORRENDOUS. I'm not really a big comic book fan, so maybe I don't know the intricacies of graphic novel art. But I can say this is absolute garbage. Some of the pages in here look like they were stenciled up in like 15 minutes. The eyes are looking in the wrong directions, body parts are not proportionate? ?!?! Did the editor even look at this thing before sending it to print? Seriously, ?!?! The artist for this volume is so terrible, I just don't know where to begin. I don't know if she was trying to give it a rougher look or what, but it conveyed nothing of the visual power of Howard's story telling.

Finally the reviews on the back. Whoever reviewed these volumes were total idiots of the stupidest variety. I know that they did not read the original Howard stories. I guess they were comparing this Conan to 1970s comic book characters or something, because they said something to the effect that Conan was upgraded to the modern age from being an "awkward galoot". ?!?! Conan is not awkward! He is a master theif and rider, a perfect fighting brain connected to a perfect fighting body! Howard ALWAYS writes about Conan compared with a panther, setting each step down with perfect balance and exhibiting the physical ability to move impossible for a civilized man. I guess the reviewers thought Conan was Arnold Schwarzenegger or something.

Also, they call him a "galoot". A galoot! As in a lumbering, oafish person! Howard's Conan can read and write! He speaks dozens of languages! He interprets ancient runes such as only scholars who have studied their entire lives can decipher! He is a commander and leader of men! A galoot?! I guess the reviewers thought Conan was Arnold Swarchzenneger or something.

Finally, the reviewers say there is "something for everyone" in this story, which gives me the sense that this was some sort of effort to broaden the base of Conan readership to include women or something? They are certainly right that there is garbage for everyone in this story arc.

To sum up, Dark Horse did a horrendous job here. The artwork was less than amateur level. The story line was fantastically wrong. The characters were not true to the original Howard works at all. And I just can't believe the whole thing got past the editors.

Trust me, skip Conan 13-15.

Conan for Twilight fans
By Koli
After having bad sales with "Road of Kings" (which was mediocre), Dark Horse decided to reboot Conan for the wider audience, with a new perspective. It's quite clear what they tried to achieve with their "Clonan", but what we got is a light version of the Barbarian that barely resembles Conan.

The main problem in here is the story. Brian Wood decided to discard the continuation that has been so important in the series. And that goes for continuation within Dark Horse's take on Conan and also the continuation within original short stories. Queen of the Black Coast is all about pirating, but for Brian Wood it seems to be an excellent opportunity to write mediocre stories about weeping weakling Conan. Most likely, Wood didn't feel like getting acquainted with the source material and instead created his B-class love story in a what could be called "a wrong place".

After reading all copies so far (1-15), I can only say it just gets worse from here. Or what do you think, would Conan be the kind of a man who would take her "girlfriend" of couple of weeks to her mother, seeking for approval? Writers like Kurt Busiek & Tim Truman would be ashamed.

Art isn't much better either. Both Becky Cloonan and James Harren clearly have no idea of what is the Hyborian Age as once painted with words by Howard himself and so vividly brought to life by other artists like Nord and Giorello.

Dark Horse should have just called it quits for Conan. What makes me most sad is the fact that no respect is seen in here for what was created by Robert E. Howard.

This is Dark Horse's desperate attempt to make quick buck with one of their most famous characters, and they fail miserably.

All in all, simply put: this is not Conan.
